It’s a lovely 14th Century building with full of character, despite our room was in the extended part, otherwise a nice experience to have breakfast in the old part of the building.

No evening meals provided. I do not agree with their policy to remove evening meals despite their reason for doing so due to demand for eating elsewhere BUT close by there were hardly any places where we could get decent meals close by unless having to go to the city centre. There were only Chinese and Indian takeaways in the surrounding area but there is one restaurant but very expensive.

Good size room very clean and plenty of room for storing your clothes. The breakfast was excellent with good choice of food and the staff were very helpful and efficient. Good size car park, we have stayed here before and would recommend it.

The bathroom was very disappointing, the toilet was too close to the radiator so you could not sit on it without banging your knees. The shower was difficult to use, you couldn't regulate it properly...you got freezing water before the hot water came through.I would not recommend room 218 just because of the bathroom problems.

Loved the room and the facilities it offered. Plenty of tea/coffee for us in the room. Iron and ironing board as expected. Absolute bonus was the fan tucked in the wardrobe which we used as the day was very hot. We were there for a wedding and the food provided after the ceremony was delicious and the evening buffet...spectacular, so much so we took a plateful for a midnight feast ; ) Cannot comment on the breakfast as we booked a room without that option.

The ONLY thing we didn't like were the bar prices...OUCH!

We liked the hotel! We have stayed there for three times. The check-in procedure was smooth and accessing an on-site parking was easy. The beautifully designed hotel is situated in a historic building. The hotel is conveniently located between the city centre and the University. Spacious rooms were equipped with all the necessary facilities. We especially liked the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon for our breakfast, which we ordered additionally from the menu. We also tried the delicious fish and chips at the hotel's restaurant. We are very grateful to the friendly staff who helped us with our queries!

I liked the hotel and the comfort. The member of staff who we spoke to was amazing, he was very helpful and a friendly face

The options for a hot drink considering the price was sparse. Room service was not available. We also arrived on an evening they held Xmas parties, the noise was not the problem, it was the parking. I feel the customers who were staying should get first choice to park on site because we may have children, luggage etc, unless they are registered disabled. I was told the parties were informed on parking just off site but this was not followed unfortunately.

Staff were so friendly, but I have to say I think you should have a front of house person organising seating and breakfast Orders. Your staff were btw excellent but, maybe have the people that serve allocated a certain amount of tables so it’s not too much on them.My husband and I waited quite some time too order breakfast,we were sat At the back of the of the room. Other people came after us but were served before us. Would we stay here again, absolutely we loved it! Thank you

The breakfast was lovely. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed during our stay. The people at reception and housekeeping where super friendly and always happy to answer questions.

The old building obviously is a bit sound sensitive, which wasn't an issue during the first night, however during the second night we had a very loud couple staying above up and awake most of the night. Reception handled this delicately and managed to move us to another room for the last night.

Cosy, comfortable hotel with period features within walking distance of the historic centre Colchester. Well appointed rooms. All the staff were welcoming and provided very good levels of customer service. Bar open in the evening. The breakfast was delicious. Car park on site was a little tight in places, but there was always a space available. Would definitely visit again.

There was nothing I did not like

Fabulously historic and quirky building. Staff were all polite and friendly. Cooked breakfast was exceptional and ingredients well-sourced.

Being historic and quirky, there are naturally certain ongoing maintenance issues, but none spoiled my stay. My initially-allocated room (125) has very bad traffic noise, particularly from 5am, such that I was given another room.

We had a family function here, and I also stayed overnight and everything was excellent. Staff lovely, also, atmosphere was great as there was a whole load of wedding guests staying as well. Only 10 mins walk to centre of town. Love the history of the place (400 years old). I met a local historian there and parts of the building were used as stables.

I wish the bar was open in the basement- it’s called the prison bar! No food served during Jan 2023. Maybe it would be nice to have a better selection of ales in the bar?
