All of the staff and the pub landlord were absolutely lovely, getting us settled and offering great local advice and information. The area is absolutely lovely with a lovely riverfront just next door onto the Colne, featuring great walks all the way from Colchester and out to the estuary too. The pub itself is great, with a wide variety of local ales and beers and great food in the evening. It's a shame they don't serve brekkie in the pub, but don't worry; brekkie is available just up the road at the Wivenhoe Cafe & Art Gallery on Alma Street. The pub also has great live music in the evening with a range of events throughout the year - check out their website to know what's on. Also, Wivenhoe itself is absolutely lovely and well worth an escape and explore to!

Honestly, not much to fault the place on at all, I would recommend the place entirely! If I were to say anything, I'd say add some herbal teas to the in-room tea selection :P

For a room above a pub this was a really nice stay. Friendly staff and plenty of room in the bedroom to manage us and all our luggage comfortably. Breakfast was delicious. Such a nice spot too just yards from the Wivenhoe waterside.

It didn't affect us at all but if you are very tall the stairs up to the rooms in this old building may be a problem for you as they are steep and you will bang your head if you are not careful. Also there are two B&B bedrooms and just 2 car parking spaces in a tight spot at the rear of the pub which you could easily miss if you didn't realise they were there.

We recently had the pleasure of staying at the Black Buoy Inn in Wivenhoe, Essex, and it was nothing short of a delightful experience. This historical pub exudes old-world charm while offering modern amenities that made our stay truly memorable. The Black Buoy Inn's location is a true gem. Situated close to the train station, it was incredibly convenient for our arrival and departure. Additionally, being nestled by the River Colne provided picturesque views and a tranquil atmosphere. The inn is perfectly positioned for leisurely walks along the riverbanks. Stepping into the Black Buoy Inn felt like entering a time capsule, in the best way possible. The historic architecture and cozy, welcoming interior transported us to a bygone era, offering a unique and authentic experience. The warm, inviting atmosphere made us feel right at home. Our room was comfortable, impeccably clean, and tastefully decorated. The blend of antique furnishings and modern amenities was executed with finesse. The view of the River Colne from our window was a delightful bonus, adding an extra layer of charm to our stay. The staff at the Black Buoy Inn were exceptional. Their attentiveness and friendliness elevated our experience. From check-in to check-out, every encounter was met with a genuine smile and a willingness to assist. It was evident that they took pride in ensuring guests had a seamless and enjoyable stay. The breakfast offered at the Black Buoy Inn was a highlight of our stay. The menu featured a variety of options, catering to different tastes and dietary preferences. The quality of the ingredients was outstanding, and the breakfast was delicious and hearty, setting us up for a day of exploration. Our stay at the Black Buoy Inn was a true pleasure. The combination of its historical charm, excellent service, and superb location made for an unforgettable experience. We would highly recommend.

We can confidently say that there was not a single thing we could fault.

The bed was very comfortable, our 2 year old slept better than he does at home as did we. Dinner was lovely and the staff were very accommodating when our table of 3 turned into a table of 6 at the last minute. So helpful when I realized I'd forgotten milk for the baby's bottle, breakfast was delicious overall we really had a great stay.

The stairs up to the room were difficult with bags and a toddler but that's the character of the old building, there was obviously noise from the bar it didn't worry us too much but something to consider if you're a light sleeper and want to sleep before 11.

A very welcoming pub, with young but extremely polite and professional staff, a rare commodity. The room was extremely clean, spacious and well equipped, with a lovely large shower. Adding to the experience was the clientele, who were very friendly. We walked around the busy village and the experience was the same. We had a lovely visit and this will be our home from home on our frequent visits to Colchester. Thank you Tracey.

We were unable to find even the smallest negative.

The Staff are very accommodating and calm. We came in as a big group without booking and they made zero fuss. We all had tasty food and they serve a great porter! We were very impressed with the room sizes. Big comfortable beds, large bathrooms and all kept immaculately clean. The biscuit, tea and coffee facilities in the room were a nice touch. Also lots of toiletries in the bathroom asking with lots of clean white towels. Breakfast was top notch, again served by friendly staff. Couldn't do better than this, we really enjoyed our stay and will come again.

Couldn't fault this one, thanks for a great stay

Excellent Pub Hotel Super Breakfasts Sausages to die for.. Enjoyed our stay good room good food good staff and Wivenhoe is central for other visits and an interesting town in its own right with tiny cottages and cottage gardens. My partner, who does not speak a lot of English, found the locals to be very kind, courteous, and helpful when she got lost cycling around the town..

Nothing..

Characterful room in a very characterful pub, close to the beautiful Colne Estuary. The room has lots of lovely beams, decor is very fresh, and the 6ft bed and bedding all superbly comfortable. Bathroom plain but spotless. Breakfast was tasty and very well-cooked. The staff were all friendly and chatty, including the new pub owner. They even had ginger wine behind the bar - a rarity these days!

Good location just a few yards back from the riverside up a narrow lane. Very friendly staff and a clean comfortable room. Once the pub closed for the night it was a very quiet location. The room was tastefully decorated and full of character, with tea and coffee making facilities as well as bottled water and cartons of orange juice. Spacious bathroom with toiletries provided, plenty of hot water from the shower.

This is not a negative, as the property is very old and full of character, but the stairs up to the rooms are narrow and steep as is to be expected.

The place has a great atmosphere and the pub side doesn't impinge on the guest rooms. The pub is well worth spending time in. The staff are very good. The restaurant was closed on the night I stayed - private party - but the food looked great. There's onsite parking, which I like. I had a big room and bathroom with loads of oak beams.

It wasn't a problem for me but this is not a place for you if you have mobility issues. The place is, of course, hundreds of years old.
