There was a lively public bar plus several lounges. Buffet breakfast was poor but the cooked breakfast was very good. The chef, for dinner, is excellent. However, the hotel appears to be used for short stays, because it is the same menu each evening. Car park is behing the hotel, sadly it is a public one at £9.75 per day with no consessions for hotel residents.
The building is about 500 years old. Thereis no lift and stairs are very steep, in some cases without proper handrails. The room had been refurbished, but no wardrobe for clothes. Bedside lights were far too high and too low a wattage, to dark to read a book.

The rooms were surprisingly spacious! Nicely decorated, quiet and very clean. Breakfast was delicious, although we arrived towards the end of the breakfast service so the staff was a little overwhelmed by the amount of people, it took a bit of time to get served. The location is absolutely perfect, central, on high street. The George pub downstairs was also a nice place to have a drink. I would stay here again!
Already mentioned, but breakfast service was a bit slow. I think it was just because a lot of people arrived at once, towards the end of breakfast times. The food was delicious though.

The hotel exudes a distinct sense of uniqueness, thanks to its exceptional interior design and the incredibly accommodating nature of its staff. During my business trip, I had some specific requests as I wished to bring back a few items from the UK, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that all my requests were fulfilled. Moreover, the food at the hotel was truly delightful, adding to the overall excellent experience.
During my first day, the room gave the impression of being tidy, but unfortunately, the cleaning staff appeared unmotivated to uphold its cleanliness. I frequently encountered new hairs across the bathroom floors, and the supplies like shampoo and body wash were never restocked. In addition to that, the bed was left unmade, and instead of replacing the coffee cups I used, they were left dirty.

We loved the look and feel of this hotel, thee staff upon check-in, the room was spotless, comfy beds and pillows
we asked for a quiet room: it was fairly quiet but unfortunately due to the isolation of the corridors and rooms you hear a loud banging of the (fire)doors every time someone passes. We read beforehand that getting to the rooms you've to climb the stairs. It hadn't gotten through to us that this means carrying a rather heavy suitcase on quite a lot off steep stairs and narrow corridors is a bit of a work out. As we found out upon arriving in Colchester centre town is partly closes for motorised vehicles and one way and narrow streets, we found it rather impossible to reach the parking of the hotel; therefore we parked in the nearest carpark.

Location of hotel was in the centre and on a one way circuit Due to bunting and parked cars, it took two circuits to visually recognize and a third to access the side street to the rear parking (Pay & Display). Hotel is a historic building and has been tastefully renovated. This aspect included the room, which was spacious clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated.
Unfortunately, room location was in close proximity to internal garden courtyard and the clientele were enjoying a boisterous evening and due to temperature it was necessary to leave the windows open. A hazard of a weekend stay during an extremely hot spell. Would have been better if rear parking was hotel property and a lower tariff imposed.

The central position of the Hotel was great for the castle and gardens, we did not have to use the car during our stay.
The ensuite bathroom was accessed up three steps, this proved challenging at night.

Great location in the centre and handy car park at the rear. Easy check in, we had a good nights sleep, clean facilities and friendly, helpful, smiley staff. The bar was a great place to relax with friends before going out to our event. We didn't try the restaurant but the breakfast was great.
The sachet toiletries supplied were fine but a few more would have been appreciated. Also more milk so we could have more than one cup of tea or coffee would make this a really thoughtful addition. The bar / restaurant was very popular and more staff would have been useful at times to be served but it wasn't too much of a wait. Maybe I shouldn't have ordered cocktails as this would have speed up the service!

The hotel was well presented, in a great location and with a great breakfast.
While the room was comfortable and facilities very good, we found a number of items on the carpet (earrings, hair slides etc) which suggested the room could have done with a bit more of a hoover. The room itself was a bit noisy, especially on the weekend as it overlooked a part of the pub with music and loud talking. This is not a problem for those out in the evening but tricky when trying to get youngsters to sleep - the payoff for being centrally located.

Gorgeous hotel with lots of history. Friendly staff and cute pub
I accidentally left my jacket in the wardrobe in the room when I checked out. When I called and emailed the next day to inquire about my jacket, the staff said it was not found. This is very disappointing as it was hanging in the wardrobe when I left. Surely it would have been found by housekeeping and turned into the lost and found. I find it unfathomable that the hotel staff said it was not found. I know it’s my fault for forgetting the jacket, but it seems suspicious that it was “not found” by housekeeping less than 24 hours after checking out. Very disappointing.

Good location, very close to lots of shops and restaurants and parking is really close by. Bathroom was lovely and modern and downstairs is very picturesque. Good value for money overall
No specification in the rooms around the room service and no room service menu in the room, no bath in the room we had and in the rooms advertised on booking.com and no mini fridge in rooms to keep drinks cold in summer. Quite noisy (noise from the hallways which are quite creaky)
