We stayed in a recently refurbished room, which was clean & comfortable. The bed was firm and provided a great night's sleep. The shower was great - good water pressure & easy to control The windows are old sash type, which is expected for an historic building, however they don't shut very tightly. Light sleepers might want to bring ear plugs as the main road can get busy. The double room was a good size, and the TV had lots of options, in case you are kept inside by the rain. The staff at The George are lovely - really helpful & genuinely friendly.

As I mentioned, better secondary glazing would keep the road/passer-by noise from disturbing one's sleep. The room doesn't have a fridge, which would be a nice addition - but really not essential.

This is a beautiful old style hotel, suited to people that enjoy culture and good old fashioned service. The hotel was beautifully furnished and decorated in the best of traditional elegant taste. The staff were particularly iimpressive, excellent service throughout, nothing was too much trouble. We enjoyed an excellent breakfast, impeccably laid out, both the buffet and the impressive menu of hot breakfasts on offer. We would definitely recommend this hotel to those with the taste to enjoy it. For us,as a retired couple, a lift up to the bedrooms would have been welcome. But we managed the lovely carpeted dark-wood stairs. The George Hotel is perfectly located on the main street in the centre of beautiful Penrith, with every kind of shop, bar, restaurant and little coffee shop right there. Penrith is a special attraction for visitors, as the famous Lakes are within easy reach. A glorious relaxing holiday destination.

We can only mention the lack of a lift, but the elegant surrounding made up for this.

Room was newly refurbished with a lovely bathroom and great bed and bedding. The wine bar was very nice, with many locals eating and drinking. We ate dinner there and it was very nice indeed. All the reception and wine bar staff were excellent.

Breakfast was disappointing. It was supposedly served until 10,00 but at 8.30 there were no pastries left and no more could be supplied, All the wholemeal bread for toasting had gone and only 4 slices of white bread were left. Some of the ingredients for the full Cumbrian breakfast had run out. On mentioning this to the waitress we got a shrug of the shoulders and a comment to the effect of "whats there is what there is". A large group of American guests were not impressed and it was a little sad as that was our last impression of the Hotel. I did pass this on to Reception before we left.

Buffet breakfast was good though getting there earlier was better to have more choice as the pastries soon go !! Cooked breakfast was served to you at the table and staff had no issues providing alternatives that were not on the hot menu, such as a simple poached egg on toast. Location for our stop was ideal for travelling around Cumbria on motorbikes. Parking is secure with gated/coded access to a small private carpark at the rear (£3 per stay). Bedrooms clean and well equipped and modernised relative to the buildings age.

Usual hotel prices for drinks at twice the price of the local Weatherspoons !! Hotel decor in the main area is a little dated due to the age and history of the property, but is in keeping with the period of the building. Noisy at the front of the hotel over the weekend as revellers exit one of the local clubs at around 3am.

Absolutely beautiful breakfast. Had eggs Royal. My husband had a full English. Sausage were good quality butchers which is not always the case in some places. Super king size bed was very comfortable and had a good nights sleep. All the staff were very attentive and helpful.

The shower head was very descaled and was squirting water in all the wrong directions. The nozzle on the hairdryer was broken so wouldn’t attach and there was a very big stain on the bedroom carpet where a drink had been spilled. I reported these to reception and was told they’re in the middle of a big refurb and haven’t completed all the rooms yet. Didn’t like having to pay for parking at the hotel. I can understand if you come for coffee etc to pay but not when your staying there. We already had an upgrade from a double to a club room, but we’re bombarded with constant automated emails wanting us to upgrade even further. This needs sorting as it feels like harassment.

Plenty of parking on hotels car park upon arrival. When we checked in we were told we had received a complimentary free room upgrade which was gratefully received, giving us a separate lounge type room. Large fan available in room which was more than welcome due to it being a warm day. Really friendly and welcoming staff throughout hotel. Nice, modern bar area (although we didn't use it) towards side of the hotel. Great choice for breakfast with a buffet style continental offering and a hot breakfast offering which was taken at the table by a staff member.

Heating seemed to be stuck on in living area of room so really warm upon check in.. Parking area locked off at night which we were unaware of until return to hotel at approx 9pm (there was free street parking available so not a major issue)

Lovely welcoming staff and easy check in. Car park near to reception area so not far to carry bags. Room was very spacious and nice to have bathrobes and bottled water included. Spa bath was nice and welcoming. Very comfy beds too. Nice heavy blackout curtains. Breakfast was beautifully cooked and worth asking for a window seat to watch the world go by.

Although room was on the back of the hotel, it was above an outside bar area or staff area so it was quite noisy at times. Glad we could open one bedroom window as it was quite stuffy.

We brought our dog with us and it is definitely pet friendly. Dogs are allowed in the bar and lounge and even reception have treats for them! Location was great. Bang in the centre of the town, however was noisy late at night because of the two bars either side of the hotel. We just shut our windows and it was ok though. Old school decor but we liked it, it fitted in with the hotel and vibe. Buffet breakfast doesn’t have hot food, just fruit, pastries and toast but you can order a cooked breakfast from the menu. Including, eggs Benedict, scrambled egg&smoke salmon. All comes with the set price for breakfast. Hotel has car parking (for an additional price) but I can get quite busy quickly. Car park is round the back of the hotel, you go through a sort of arch and a barrier.

Breakfast was excelllent both mornings. Amazing service Delicious eggs benedict

For the first time ever we were disappointed with the room ..Carpet was extremely badly stained quite disgusting. Didn't notice that you had to inform reception the night before if you wanted your room serviced - disappointing The final straw was the car parking charge. not mentioned in booking and never paid before. With a disabled badge I could park on the street outside the hotel all day, every day free of charge!!!!

Glorious historic hotel in a great central location next to England's oldest department store and near all the great restaurants on the High Street.

I'd specifically asked for rooms next door to each other for good reason and had confirmed this before booking and then just before arrival. Rooms were not as booked but were instead along a short corridor and round a corner. I would have made alternative arrangements had I known, but communication on this matter was poor. Single room smelt strongly of disinfectant. The hotel was, otherwise, lovely.
