Nice room, bath, good food (evening pub meals and breakfast). Lots of local characters and interesting visitors (at least when I was there). Less expensive than neighbouring coastal towns like Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay (where accommodation is also in short supply). There's a railway station within walking distance (about 1/3 mile from the inn). This is a Northern Rail service to Whitby (saves on parking costs and possible difficulties finding parking in Whitby). It goes to Middlesbrough in the other direction. It is NOT the steam North York Moors railway however!

Rather like another North York Moors village, Goathland (Heartbeat), the village is a fairly featureless place (nice scenery in the background though), just rows of houses built approaching the four sides of a crossroads (after driving through excellent scenery to get there). Apart from the Duke of Wellington and the railway station (Northern Rail, NOT North York Moors steam railway) there's not a huge amount to draw you to the village. ...Not the fault of those running the inn, of course!

I stayed here for two nights as was attending a school reunion locally and have moved away from the area. Location is perfect, brought back memories of a child and young adult. Central to get about to places of interest. The accommodation was spot on, staff very welcoming and helpful. I had a single room which was cleaned daily. It had everything needed, tea and coffee in room, television, ensuite with bath and shower, clean towels daily. The food was excellent, all fresh, not processed and cooked for the time I wanted it. I would definitely recommend a stay here 😃

Nothing, all spot on!

Cosy room, delicious dinner (mushroom starter especially). Served quickly. Nice staff. Beautiful looking old inn covered with creepers. 20 mins walk to the Danby Moors Centre. Nice central location in the small village of Danby.

This building is very old and therefore has traditionally low ceilings - they were ok for me, just had to be more mindful when moving around the building. Although in shower, there was only 3-4 inches clearance between my head and the ceiling which felt small (I am 5 foot 8). If you're over 5 foot 10, the ceilings may need to be a consideration.

I stayed here to attend a friend's wedding at Danby castle and barn, about a mile away from the Duke of Wellington. Nearby accommodation wasn't easy to find, as well as organising check in times around the timing of the day. The Duke of Wellington were just down the road from the venue, as well as being really accommodating by letting me check in early so that I didn't have to duck out of the wedding to check in. I stayed in the single room and the photos of it don't do it justice - it was a lovely little room with everything I needed. The bathroom was bigger than I was expecting, everything was really clean and the staff were lovely. If in ever in this gorgeous part of the world again I would hesitate to stay at The Duke of Wellington.

There was nothing I didn't like about my stay.

The staff are amazing; warm, personable and genuine. The breakfasts I had were great (I had alternative evening meal plans) and set me up for each day of my stay. The pub is clearly popular with the locals, who are very welcoming. The value for money overall (especially as a Yorkshireman :-)) I think is excellent.

A wider breakfast dining window (e.g. 08:00-09:30) would have been preferable for me, but the food and great coffee is well worth getting up that bit earlier for!

Great people, food was delicious and there was a great atmosphere. My room was spacious and comfortable with everything I needed for my stay. Towels were changed, room cleaned and bed made every day 🙏

Its just my personal preference and it was fine but I like a walk in shower. A modern shower system would make it perfect 👍

My room was delightful, with beautiful detail touches, all in keeping with the period of the property. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, and everything was spotless. The bar had a great range of local beers, and I enjoyed a fine meal of local fish, and finished with a rare malt scotch. It was great to come down in the morning to a breakfast freshly cooked to order as well. The staff were terrific. Very friendly and helpful. The host in particular was a mine of local information.

Just one minor thing - my room overlooked the front of the inn, and I’d hoped to get an early night, but drinkers outside kept me awake till almost midnight.

Lovely pub that had accommodation. The room was really nice, very quaint and niche. The pub had a warm, welcoming feel to it. Good choice of food and all freshly cooked. A good breakfast offer in the morning. Prefer staying in these types of places than large chains as you get a better service.

This is an old building, so it was cold weather when I stayed. The room was warm enough, but the bathroom floor was a little chilly. Didn't detract from the stay though.

Great welcome and verbal explanation of useful information. Breakfast was very good and ordered the night before. This arrangement was great for staff, but not always good as you don’t always know how you will feel the next morning regarding eating! The quality of the food was excellent, but a choice of fresh fruit or cereals would have been a useful addition. The room was lovely and furnished in keeping with the age of the property, but we found the mattress a little ‘lumpy’ and worn.

A choice of cereals / fresh fruit and yogurt would have enhanced an otherwise excellent breakfast. A choice in the morning rather than the night before would have been preferred.

Great location in a lovely village, our room was on the side overlooking the green and even though it was on the road junction there was no traffic noise atall. The staff were friendly and professional and made us feel like friends not customers. Excellent food and drinks.

Having to leave.
