Hotel American-Dinesen

Third stay at this hotel over twenty years. In good weather, the location is excellent. This time we were there in raw, cold December and it seemed too far from good restaurants long after dark. Formerly, though, we loved being directly on a small, working canal where we could watch local commercial maritime activity in a quiet, interesting neighborhood. The hotel is only a five minute walk from the Accademia Bridge and vaporetto stop, extremely convenient. As for the hotel, the staff couldn't be nicer. Extremely important in Italy, the beds are perfectly comfortable, made with good linens. All is immaculate, and there is a nice bar adjacent to the lobby for nightcaps after returning from dinner. Breakfast is exceptional, almost extravagant, with every choice you could want as well as freshly made omelettes to taste.

We always choose the same room, front corner, which has windows looking directly out onto the small canal and another with a view towards the Grand Canal. It's a very small room, however, and tiny bathroom, and over five days, we felt cramped. A more serious problem, though, is that the furniture isn't "real," that is, there are tables with no drawers, cupboards with no shelves, no place to put anything. We never could really unpack and got tired of trying to rummage through our suitcases and sort table top heaps of necessaries. Night table drawers, hooks on the walls or doors, and most important, shelves in the empty space in the armoire would make an enormous difference.

I stayed one night at American-Dinesen. I booked the Superior Double room with Canal View. The room had a cute balcony, was very clean, and all necessary amenities. The staff were helpful and friendly at check-in, showing me to my room and highlighting features within. The hotel is in a great location for taking in the sites and is easy walking to Saint Mark's Square and Rialto bridge. The hotel was nice enough to store my bags at no cost the day of check-out so I could explore a bit more! It was what I needed for my stay and a private water taxi from the airport took me directly to the hotel. Overall, a nice stay but a little overpriced, maybe.

The blond female staff member that was present at reception when I returned to retrieve my bags was not at all helpful. In fact, when asked about how to get to the shared water taxi, she turned up her nose and said something to the effect of, "I don't know anything about shared taxis. Our guests arrive by private water taxi." I explained to her that I had been told earlier by the (very nice) man the shared Vaporetto stop was within easy walking distance. She continued to say she did not know. Her response felt a bit snobbish to be honest and did not leave me with a good impression. I would recommend that all staff know how to advise guests regarding ALL transfer options and do so in a friendly, less uppity manner.

Fantastic location. Lovely room with a small balcony over looking a beautiful little canal and views back to the Grand Canal. The air conditioning was great given the hot weather. The staff were wonderful and the included breakfast was good and generous.

The room was upstairs and in a different but linked building to reception, so it was quite a convoluted walk from the lobby, and the lift wasn’t working. The concierge helped carry our bags to our room on arrival, but it was a bit of a struggle carrying them ourselves when we left. The room was quite expensive, but it is in a lovely heritage building in Venice in peak tourist season so none of this was unexpected.

We stayed at the American Dinesen hotel many years ago, perhaps twenty-five, and remembered it as a great location with a pleasant room, so we rebooked. It was all we remembered and more. We had a corner room with three balconies that looked out over the quiet but active side canal where the hotel is located. The room is smallish but just big enough. The new decor is sort of faux Venetian with an enormous purple print on the wall, but in view of all the positives, quite acceptable. The bathroom is brand new and very efficiently designed. The entire premises are immaculate, and the HVAC system regulates the temperatures perfectly. There is a nice little bar in the lobby where you can get a late-night drink, and the staff are uniformly pleasant and eager to help with any problem. We were grateful that all Covid requirements were carefully observed. The location on Dorsoduro is excellent: away from crowds, near cafes and very close to the Accademia vaporetto stop as well as the Accademia and the Guggenheim. We were delighted all over again and would happily return to the American Hotel. And I hope we do, because Venice itself if simply a miracle of beauty and magic, like a dream remembered, particularly in misty November when in daylight the water is a warm jade color and at night the moon ripples over the black expanses of the endless lagoon. Winter is the time to come, cool and fresh outside, but you'll be cozy when you return to the Hotel American.

Nothing! Just right

The hotel is perfectly located in the Dorsoduro district. It overlooks a small canal, far from the main street. The rooms are very clean and well-equipped, and I had a quiet room that didn't face directly onto the canal. Bed was very comfortable and the staff very helpful and attentive. There are also electric shutters that allow you to sleep in complete darkness.

The lights and AC in the room are controlled by a card that must be inserted when you enter the room. The location of the card is indicated by a blue light, which unfortunately illuminates the room quite brightly when you're trying to sleep.

The location is absolutely perfect! Close to everything but in a quiet street and away from the crowds. The hotel is clean, stylish and very well maintained. The staff are amazing, extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We also enjoyed an excellent breakfast each morning. There’s a communal outdoor seating area, where we enjoyed meeting other guests, who were all really interesting and chatty.

Our room was a bit dark, if I go back to Venice, I would definitely stay here again, but would consider paying the extra for a room with a balcony at the front of the hotel.

Breakfast was amazing each morning. The breakfast staff was very kind and responsive. The hotel was in a quiet residential community with a beautiful view. The room and hotel were extremely clean and well-cared for. Front desk staff during the day was very helpful with directions and making dinner reservations.

When we checked in, the temperature in the room was unbearable (81 F). After several calls to the front desk, we were told there was no way to turn on the AC or turn off the heater in the bathroom as they were controlled by an outside source (?) We were also told that we could not open the windows due to mosquitos. With all of the heat and the added stress of the blow dryer, the breaker went out two times. The good news is that so did the heat in the bathroom. The room thermostat reset as well and the room cooled considerably.

This hotel really has the most helpful staff I've ever met, nothing is any trouble to them. The rooms all appear to be unique and are beautifully decorated. It has a nice breakfast room with a good choice of food. It's well located for all the tourist attractions, Peggy Guggenheim museum is literally around the corner, and the Grand Canal even closer. There is even a water taxi stand right outside so you can leave the city in style! It is well served for local restaurants for evening dining.

Nothing, I loved this hotel.

Our room was beautiful, the bed was very comfortable and the blackout blinds worked well. The bathroom was small but the shower was excellent and quality toiletries were provided. It was good to have a kettle in our room. The breakfast was delicious - good choice and food was hot, and the coffee was superb. Stage were friendly and helpful, and we enjoyed the free trip (available to guests) to Murano. Finally, we found the location perfect - close to the Grand Canal and major attractions with a good choice of excellent eateries close by.

The English breakfast tea provided in the room was not very good (but coffee at breakfast was excellent so it didn’t matter much). Storage could be better - no drawers provided and only a few hangers, so we had to keep most of our stuff in our cases.
