- 10 mins walk to Kyoto station, was quite convenient when we wanted to save on transport. - Room was clean and cozy

- Room was quite small, minimal walking space after opening 2 luggages. - There was additional tourist tax/day to be paid at the reception during check-in (~200Y/pax/day). Was not aware that there was additional charges on top of the 10% VAT when making the reservation.

ANTEROOM Kyoto doesn't bury the lede: it's a former high school turned into a true art gallery with a boutique hotel. It's beautiful both inside and out: art installations greet you when you arrive, as well as a stylish bar, a make your own bath salts station, arcades and claw games. And that's even before getting to the rooms: they're HUGE for Japan standards. Even though I wanted a room with a queen bed, I got a spacious one with double twin beds but it wasn't that much or a problem. Common japanese amenities are provided, and the hotel is located in a comfy and quiet neighborhood. I would stay here time and time again. Staff were so kind when we had a couple of issues, and spoke fluent English. I even bought a couple of souvenirs from the art store!

No electronic keys for the rooms - maybe it's keeping with the retro vibe, but it's not convenient for travelers. Doesn't have that much public transit nearby, but that's no biggie since Kyoto is pretty easy to navigate on your own.

Amazing hotel - great sized rooms, delicious breakfast, clean modern bathroom. Loved how you could make your own mix of bath salts to relax with! Staff were very helpful organising taxis, luggage courier, etc. for us. Also loved all the artwork on display on the ground floor. Short walk from the subway station, with also access to buses. Restaurants and convenience stores nearby, with a supermarket across the road. My favourite hotel I have ever stayed in the 5 times I have visited Kyoto, I would stay there again in a heartbeat!

While we liked the changing breakfast sandwiches, it would have been nicer if other breakfast options changed more regularly. After a week I was wanting to try something different.

Excellent value - daily housekeeping with daily change of towels, bottle of water and slippers. The hotel also provided a set of pyjamas which is quite comfortable to wear. Excellent breakfast with use of fresh ingredients and smoothie made daily with vegetables and fruits. There's also a diy bath salt corner which you can make your own bath salt with essential oil and herbs. It was great to soak in a tub with bath salt after a day of sightseeing. Inexpensive use of washing machine and dryer which reduced the amount of clothes I need to bring on this trip. Overall this is an excellent hotel that surpassed my expectation.

Location - a short walk to Jujo station. It's 2 stops to Kyoto Station and 4 stops to Shijo, the shopping district. However if the location was in Kyoto Station or Shijo, the price point would be a lot higher. Considering what I paid versus the value I'm getting, the location is a small minus. It's a straight road from station to hotel so very easy to walk. I would stay here again if I'm in Kyoto.

Room was very spacious for hotels in Japan. It is an art hotel, so exhibits lots of artworks from local artists throughout the ground floor, as well as promoting exhibitions and events in the local area. Breakfast each morning consisted of two prepared open sandwiches or English muffins along with a wonderful buffet of salad ingredients, roasted vegetables, eggs and bacon, bread, granola, yoghurt, juice, soup, and coffee. While not as extensive as high end hotel buffets, this was an amazing selection for this price and staff were frequently topping up each item to ensure that it was fresh. Staff were very helpful and polite. It is a short walk to the subway station and two convenience stores. It is located a bit further away from the central Kyoto area, but a great place to stay if you don't mind catching the subway to tourist destinations.

Very clean room, comfortable small Double bed (the first soft bed I’d come across in Japan), great air con, great washing facilities (although perhaps some clearer signage to say which was a washer and which was a dryer to prevent any mishaps). free amenities (different teas, bath salts toothbrushes etc) were a bonus, but the bath was a little too small to bathe in (I’m 5ft6). nice lounge area!

Location was a little further away from the sightseeing spots than expected, around a 15 min walk to Kyoto station or Gion district was a 40 minute walk. 5 mins walk to 2 different stops on the subway. The hotel has a bar but this is only open on the weekend.

I loved the location. Depending on your speed and chosen route, it’s just a 15 to 30 minutes walk away from Kyoto station which has everything; for days where you want a quick meal, snack or souvenirs. I can’t remember the station names but Anteroom Kyoto is between two train stations - about 5 to 10 minutes. Again, depending on your walking speed. Along with the bus stops around, I found travelling around really easy. There are is a good amount of convenient marts around, local restaurants and a ramen shop about 2 minutes away. The room I got had a pretty good view too. The neighbourhood, mountains and Kyoto Tower were beautiful. It’s clean and quiet, as are the common areas. I personally loved Anteroom Kyoto for how calm the location is.

The bathtub was kind of funky, drained reeeeally slow. And the water temperature was a little hard to control.

Everyday the cleaners provided fresh amenities likes towels, water, toothpaste, etc which made things really easy for us. Staff are always nice. The room is so spacious especially for a place in Japan. They provided free DIY bath salts which were so cute. They had some rentable bikes in the front which cost 1500yen a day i believe, this can be a fun experience for those who know how to ride a bike.

The colour of the walls made it feel very eerie & made it look run down, especially near the back elevators. This made it very creepy to be by yourself. The dryer was really weak so it took 4 hours to decently get our clothes dry.

Lovely big foyer with interesting art installations. Fabulous range of quality breakfast food. Helpful and friendly reception staff. A very nice touch was being able to mix your own bath salts to use in the deep personal baths! I liked being able to leave my suitcase at reception for a few hours after I checked out. Hotel is great value for money.

I missed having a socket near a mirror in my room so I could see what I was doing when I used the hairdryer. I carefully collected all the items I used that would be recycled in my own country (New Zealand) but was perturbed when I took them to reception at the end of my stay and was told the hotel didn't recycle! The hotel is a 20-minute walk from the action, but that's a small price to pay for what you get.

Quiet location, honestly the best location we have stayed at so far for peace and quiet, you cannot hear any traffic from the room and no noise from other guests. The hotel is within walking distance of Kyoto station, which we walked to daily to make trips to other cities. There are plenty of places to eat in the surrounding area for dinner. We opted for the booking option with breakfast included, and the breakfast options were different every day with huge variety of options! Room was very clean and staff were so helpful. We also enjoyed partaking in Sri Lankan night and viewing the exhibition on the ground floor!

Bar is only open on Saturday and Sunday. However, bottled drinks are able to be purchased from front desk to take up to rooms
