Hotel Alex Johnson Rapid City, Curio Collection by Hilton

We were ending what we called our "Dirt Trip" where accommodations were basic, so the Alex Johnson was definitely a welcome change of pace. The lobby is a beautiful example of rustic opulence, the desk staff was exceptional, drinks on the roof delicious, gift shop ladies interesting... Here's the best: hotel right across street from the Elk Theater, an old movie theater, which was playing Barbie!! Great way to finish a special trip with our 27 year old daughter. It is also in a great location, but unfortunately, our time was too short to explore much.

Clean, professional staff, quick access to bars, restaurants and coffee places, prime location .

I believe I was harassed by a “ghost” during my first night , when “something” pulled my blanket while I was sleeping , and I felt “a presence” in the room for the rest of the night . Our dog was barking on and off looking at the closet for the next couple days for no reason, and it would not go near it . I didn’t realize the hotel was associated with ghost stories,until I had already checked out and somebody mentioned it to me. I don’t believe in ghosts , but it made sense in a way.

For the price paid, an included breakfast is appropriate.

The staff was very friendly to talk to and helpful in answering questions. There was always someone asking how our day and stay were going. Also, a big thing for me was how quiet it always seemed to be while winding down at night, especially with a lot of family there for state wrestling. I never ate at the hotel so I cannot comment on that.

The only complaint I have is that my room bathroom wasn't fully clean. There were hair chunks, that weren't mine, under the sink and by the garbage can.

We had breakfast across the street which was excellent. We tried the breakfast connected to the hotel and it was disappointing. Not sure what oil was used to cook the eggs and home fries but it was distasteful. The location was excellent

The hotel is historic but dated. Carpeting had multiple dark stains. Wallpaper needs an update. We had no house keeping because of staff shortage and emptied our own trash and had to seek out clean towels. Bathroom had film of dut on inside door by bottom molding. Gross.

the valet situation is terrible. the valet attendants were fine, but the poor things have to run to god knows where to park cars. I called down 20 minutes before I left my room and still waited another 20 minutes to get my car. This is actually an impairment to my leaving the building to go do what I need to do.

This is the third time I’ve stayed at the Alex Johnson. I love this historic hotel. It has character, is warm and cozy, and is in a great location. Great hot water pressure in the shower. Front desk staff are helpful and friendly. The lobby is comfortable and inviting. Breakfast onsite at Paddy O’Neill’s is good value.

Great location and historic ambiance. Staff was friendly, informative and helpful (Patrick). Parking reasonable and convenient. Great Pub downstairs with a pretty decent Rubin and cold beer. Starbucks for that morning starter. Wish I had more time to hang out. Would make a great base to stay while exploring the region.

Nothing really.

The location was wonderful for the bars and restaurants. The valet parking was nice as well. The history of the hotel is very nice.

The elevator did not work with going to our floor unless we swipped our key on the fob. I was told initially we only need to swipe our card on the fob when you got the the skybar.

I got a room on the sixth floor that had fabulous views of the city and the surrounding mountains. The rooms are very modern and nice and super clean too. There was even a little curving hallway from my room door into my room, which made it extra quiet in here. Having a Starbucks in the lobby is a nice add. When I arrived it was snowing and after unloading all of my stuff from my car, I immediately went to Starbucks to get a hot chocolate! The valet staff was very kind even as hotel guests were being very demanding due to the snow and associated delays. The hotel staff was able to extend my stay here for one more night so I could wait out the snowstorm. It was a very seamless experience. The location is fantastic as well. I have been able to explore Rapid City on foot with my two dogs who are traveling with me.

There is no parking on site, and the loading area in front of the hotel was completely full when I arrived. I parked in an illegal spot close by to unload. Also, it was snowing when I was here so I used the heater in the room. The device is very loud and woke me up overnight a few times. The elevators are also very slow during peak times like dinner.
