Beautiful Ryokan that backs up right to the mountains. Had a very pretty koi pond and a beautiful stream and waterfall nearby. We loved the private onsen and it was very easy to book. I didn’t get a chance to go to the public onsen but my wife said it was very nice. We ordered the breakfast and dinner meals for the 3 nights we stayed. The meals were tasty and beautifully prepared. The owner and staff were very friendly and helpful. There were a few rooms that had their own private outside onsens that I would have loved to have booked but I think they book well ahead of time.

It was a bit far from the JR station and town (30 minute walk) but it was an easy 10 minute taxi ride and the owner was happy to drive and pick us up if he had the time.

Absolutely amazing experience. Very near perfect but can't help but give it a ten. The public and private outdoor baths were really enjoyable. Each dining experience especially the dinners were an adventure. Staff were friendly and helped send us to the station as well as pick us up when we arrived. The decor and surroundings really transport you to another world, while still having the modern amenities to make us comfortable. Location is a bit remote but if you like the peace and tranquility that makes it even better.

Staff can speak and understand limited English, but they make up for it with a very willing attitude to help and assisted by google translate. Wish the private hot spring could be opened for a bit longer. When showering the taps can take a bit of time to warm up, but that's just a matter of getting used to it.

The staff is very gentle and trying to meet your expectations. The dinner can be kinda "weird" at first glance but it was totally worth it! We stayed on mixed beds so you can use the western style or going full futon on the ground. The bath area on the room was huge. The onsen part have the public one (open almost 24h) and the private bath (open until 22:30) You need to reserve to used it.

It's kinda isolated on the city so if you go without a car and without some snacks before you book-in, you can risk of being hungry before the breakfast. The temperature on the bath on bathroom takes a while to get warm/hot (10 minutes) they advise about it. Both are no PROBLEM but need to keep in mind when booking it.

This ryokan is something very special. From the kind welcome with freshly prepared team to the extraordinary lengths the team has gone to to make us feel welcome and looked after. We let them know in advance that we are vegans and they magicked an incredible array of deliciousness and beauty onto our private room dining table every morning and evening without fail. I still dream of the many variations of tofu and vegetables. The Japanese gardens are a pleasure to walk through and the onsen are a dream. I preferred the public onsen to the private one, as the private is rather small. Still very nice.

nothing. everything was perfect. To manage expecations: this is a little off the beaten path so you should consider coming here with a car.

Simply everything from the moment we walked in, we were greeted by a very warm and friendly reception. The hotel was in good condition and the grounds were very beautiful. The room we had was lovely surrounded by nature and offered more privacy and distance from the other guests more so then a traditional hotel. We travelled with 4 young kids and they were treated exceptionally well and they adjusted the Japanese menu to suit our children's tastes. The set dinner and breakfast was great , we enjoyed the food very much. It was a nice quiet location and we found it a good starting point for exploring beppu and surrounds. We always have rental car in Japan so i can't comment on the ease of access for public transport. The onsen both public and private were lovely perhaps the private one was just a bit better The guests were predominantly non Japanese.

Nothing.

Beppu Showaen is a beautiful ryokan. Our experience here was the best during our stay in Japan. The staff is amazing - so kind, so helpful and so happy to help always! It was a pleasure interacting with all of them and they truly made our stay even better. 11/10! Our private family room was authentic and beautifully maintained, complete with our own balcony overlooking the stream and so very peaceful. We also enjoyed the private and public onsen within the property which was the highlight of our stay. I highly recommend this place and can't wait to visit again!

Nothing, everything was perfect!

Total of about 9 to 10 separate units. I stayed in Kumori which has a living room good for 3 to 4 futon beds, a separate bedroom with 2 super single western beds, vanity area and bath and a separate area for toilet. It is like a house. Staff are very friendly. I requested for one dinner to be served in my unit and they kindly agreed and it was a fabulous experience. We were given 50 mins each day to use the private onsen in a separate area, just 1 min walk away. Excellent. Dinner and breakfast were delicious. I will definitely stay there again if I go back to Beppu.

It would be perfect if more premium sashimi were given at dinner. One night was Aji and another night was Hirame. For the price paid, maybe the ryokan could consider giving more premium sashimi and add on another type instead of only one type.

The staff consistently checked up on us and ensured we were taken care of the whole time. The breakfast and dinner courses were interesting and high quality. We didn't use the public onsen because we had tattoos but they had no problem reserving the private ones for us, which was more comfortable in my opinion.

Almost everything was great. If I had to list one thing I didn't like, maybe it was the distance from walking to convenience stores for a midnight snack. Nothing uber eats to 7/11 or Lawson couldn't solve though.

Beppu Showaen was a very special experience. The food was the best we had in Japan, beautifully presented, and quite different from typical restaurant fare. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms are excellent though as one should expect with a ryokan fairly simple and rustic. The onsite couple onsen was lovely and welcome at the end of the day.

I'm no really used to sleeping on a futon and found it a little basic. The location is a bit out of the way but this was not a problem.

Lovely little traditional ryokan in Beppu. Was very nice having a small lodge to ourselves and the outside onsens were incredible. They were able to cater to my vegetarian requirements so I didn't miss out on the kaiseki experience and had an incredible meal alongside the normal meat/fish meal served. Delightful service and accomodation, one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Appreciated the option for western beds as well as traditional futons in the tatami room as it allowed the people in our group who wanted to try futons to have that experience and for those that preferred a western style bed to have that as well.

I had thought we'd get served meals in the rooms but it was in a (private) dining room in a different building instead at western style tables. Not a big issue but just different than I'd expected as it wasn't fully clear until we arrived that was the case!
