My family and I want to experience staying in a ryokan or Japanese home type of setup, so I booked this place near Gion. We enjoy staying there for 4 days. Walking distance to Kiyomizu-dera. Sherrie and Shin take very good care of us. The room is clean and beds are comfortable. There is no TV in the room so we are able to stay there and enjoy the zen and calm environment during our Kyoto trip. Absolutely loving it.
The staircase is quite steep so will be good to bring smaller luggage instead of medium size luggage. Going up the stair to get to the room can be challenging.

EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING!!! We enjoyed our stay at Muan so much. It was beautifully decorated, the rooms were so spacious with excellent bathrooms and toilets. The staff were extremely friendly and made us feel so welcomed. The breakfast was delicious. Location was excellent.
Nothing! I didn't like that we have to leave so soon. I cannot wait to go back to Kyoto and stay at Muan. I would specifically make a trip to Kyoto just to stay there again. The entrance was a little hard to find at first because it was located on a private road and it doesn't show on google map. However, it was really convenient once you found it.

It was in a great location, it was very traditional looking, the room was very spacious, and the bath was nice. The bathroom floors were heated. Everyone there was so nice. They all took such great care of us. Kana-san was especially kind and helpful. She was able to help us book activities that were sold out online. We were having trouble finding a cab and we were running late and she ran out to the street to flag down a cab for us.
Everything was wonderful. I would recommend asking them to show you how to turn on the hot water for the bath when you arrive. Also if you have difficulty with mobility, keep in mind that you have to climb stairs to get to the front door.

This place is INCREDIBLE! I have no other words for it other than the most pleasant stay I could ever imagine having at a traditional Japanese ryoken. We opted for daily traditional kaseki breakfasts that were served in our room with tea and coffee, would sit at the bar and chat with the staff and sample their great Japanese whiskey collection, enjoyed our beautiful spa-like bathroom with private onsen, heated floors, temperature controlled shower area, and beds so comfy, you couldn't help but fall asleep as soon as your head hit the pillow. The staff were incredibly amazing and very quick to handle any needs we had—and they were SO friendly! We had several great and long conversations with them that they felt like friends more than hotel staff. The location was great too because you were a short walk to several temples, popular tourist sites and great food but was secluded enough that you felt like you could relax and detox from the chaos of other large cities in Japan. This was one of the best experiences during our 12-day stay in Japan. I highly highly recommend.
I loved everything about our stay and have absolutely zero complaints with it, other than I wish we could've stayed for even longer. We stayed for 5 days and I would've moved in if I could, it was that amazing.

We had an exceptional experience with excellent service throughout, from sending taxi instructions for travel from train station to booking an authentic Japanese meal and transport back. Being able to have breakfast in the room was lovely and our preferences for breakfast were being taken into account. The bathroom was lovely with shower and wooden bath. Location is outstanding for exploring Gion and surrounding old areas. It was nice and quiet in the evenings.
Nothing - it was perfect for us.

This is the best Ryokan to stay in Kyoto, facilities are unmatched. Aesop products and Dyson hairdryer. The authentic Japanese style room downstairs with Futon beds is very comfortable but we also stayed in rooms upstairs. We ordered their breakfast every morning & it was perfectly balanced and our favourite way to start our day. They even had water temperature settings, the bath is very large and fantastic, also automatic temperature regulated so you can feel warm in the bath as long as you like. Beds & futons were comfortable. Sae Sumii made our stay very comfortable and is a lovely staff member. Also it is right in the middle of Gion so you can explore the district and has amazing dinner places in authentic small restaurants (some need to be booked in advance).

The property is hidden away in the back alleys of Kyoto's historical Gion district. This makes it an ideal spot to explore Kyoto rich heritage easily whilst also being tucked away from the noise of traffic and tourists. The staff at the property is exceptionally friendly, caring, and forthcoming. We had split our stay in Kyoto between this hotel and another and I deeply regretted this decision as I just wanted to stay at this property.

Staff were amazing. I am sorry I didn't take her name but the lady who assists customers from evening to morning is the one I am talking about. She speaks excellent English and is very helpful. The room is very spacious and has all the modern amenities required whilst providing the traditional Japanese feel. We also opted to have traditional Japanese breakfast which was absolutely delicious. The area where the hotel is located is exceptional. It is the oldest part of Kyoto and still has those old lanes with traditional Japanese houses. I truly feel this hotel does not get enough exposure. I would highly highly recommend this place to anyone travelling to Kyoto and I would stay there again in a blink
There was nothing I didn't like here. Loved my stay and experience
