A quaint hybrid ryokan right in the midst of the old quarter. Easy access to most touristy places, though a bit of a walk from the nearest train stop.
Would be nice to have breakfast served in our room like a regular ryokan, instead all guests have breakfast in the common dining room.

Excellent location to wander the streets of goon and around the corner from the glorious Yasaka shrine and some lovely traditional cafes! The breakfast set was like nothing I’ve ever experienced - very impressed and highly recommend. A great selection of fresh, traditional. breakfast items which was presented immaculately. So glad we decided to try this! Kids were provided a kids breakfast set option too. Very responsive to food allergies too. Attentive staff who were very happy to help out with anything. I couldnt fault anything. I also loved that ryokan rooms were fitted with individual heating systems so you could control the temp of your room if needed.
All was excellent!

Excellent location in Old quarter of Kyoto within walking distance of Kiyomizudera temple and just behind Yasaka shrine. Lots of lovely cafes surround the ryokan and a very scenic neighbourhood. Very spacious room for Japanese standards, was the largest room during our stay in Japan. Very helpful and welcoming staff and really enjoyed the traditional style with modern amenities. All in all an excellent stay. If we're slightly cheaper we would have stayed for more than 2 nights as was the best room we had during our holiday.
There was a buzzing noise at night from some machine we couldn't figure out how to switch off. We dis not use the air conditioner or air purifier so couldn't figure out the sound. But other than that, no complaints.

We stayed together with 2 other friends and everything was absolutely beautiful. The staff speaks English, so it was easy to communicate. The dinner and breakfast courses were amazing. There were detailed explanations of every course. One of our friends in the group is vegan and they adjusted their meals for her. The room was very spacious, the beds are made when we're at dinner as usual, all our luggage fit in the room, there were plenty of wardrobe space and we stayed very comfortably. You can wear the provided yukata to the dinner, and I did, which was a nice small experience for me on the side. The rooms and bathrooms are clean and bath, toilet and sink are in separate spaces; so it's not an issue for people staying together.
Not exactly something the inn can do about this but: We thought we could get to the location from Kyoto Station easily by bus, and normally on the map it looks like you can, but we underestimated our luggage. We didn't know we had to place luggage on another platform in buses in Japan and then there's a bit of walking distance and some slope on the way to the inn after the bus stop. So we chose taxi while going to our second location after our stay here (and the inn called taxi for us); which we should've done while getting there as well. So if you're getting from the Kyoto Station with luggage as well, we highly recommend taxi.

For our family of 5 with 3 kids under 9 was amazing! I was concerned about the noise we were making but our room seemed to have some noise cancelling cause out of our door you could t hear us. The staff were extra nice when I wanted to have a drink at the bar but it was already closed, they went above and beyond and have me 30 minutes before dinner rush, so I was all by myself enjoying the beautiful garden! It had extra mattresses and pillows which was amazing. The hotel was beautiful, so traditional and in the middle of lots amazing touristic places and restaurants! So amazing

The location is superb if you are looking to be at the heart of gion. The old streets and temples are a close walk. The room itself was very tidy and having a ryokan experience was nice. The shower for me was great it had a sitting shower design as in onsens. The staff were really nice and helped with all our logistical needs. They do offer massages at an additional cost.
I think that it's a bit overpriced because you don't get any emnesties beyond tea that you make in your room with a tea pot.. I get that it's traditional....but you know..still. Even for drinks you need to get them at the machine. Also I must say that the lighting could be better as the night lamp was really low so we almost always stayed with the main white light..

The ryokan is obviously well used but this didnt in any way detract from it. It is very popular. The onsens were very nice with very clean washing and bathing facilities. We selected breakfast and dinner options for both our nights. Both were overwhelming in their quality, presentation, and amount of food. The seafood was so fresh and diverse. Both meals were totally worth the extra money. All hotel staff were so helpful, polite and cheerful. Nothing was any bother. Our room steward who looked after assembling and dissassembling our bedding as well as serving our meals in the room was so delightful, patient, and informative with a great sense of humor. The ryokan's location right next to the river and on the main street is perfect. Family wants to return and stay.

Location is very good to main tourist attractions, it is clean and staff is very friendly. True traditional hotel experience is made there although it seems like a new building. All the amenities in the bathroom, fridge, table and all needed in the living room. Dinner and breakfast were also traditional as expected. We very much liked the dinner with multiple courses and we would like to express special thank you to our waiter Hiro. He was very patiently answering our questions and clarifying the way to properly eat dishes we were not familiar with. Wonderful job Hiro, going the extra mile!
Bathroom felt a little outdated and in our room we had a view at the cemetery although there was not allowed to get out on the little balcony anyway. The price felt rather on the higher end, although understandable for traditional stay, still rather higher for place without own onsen.

A lovely stay with professional, attentive and helpful staff. The included kaiseki dinner and breakfast was a real highlight. They even included a different menu for our second night dinner and second day breakfast. The food was a real treat and worth paying the extra for the experience. A fantastic location to explore all the (so many!) shrines and temples on the eastern side of Kyoto and Gion. A special treat for a night or two in Kyoto.
Don't really have anything to complain about, except perhaps was a little pricey.

Ryokan Karaku is well situated in the historic Gion neighborhood, making it super easy to walk to all the lovely streets and shrines. The traditional style of this hotel was a really cool experience. Everything from sleeping in the traditional Japanese style on the floor to tasting the delicious Kyoto style breakfast was a really special experience!.
I got sick (I'll spare the details) towards the end of my stay-I asked one of the hotel concierge for a bowl of rice for lunch until my friend got back from touring the city later that evening. I was informed that it was not possible to have anything from the kitchen. I may not be familiar with all the rules of the ryokan, but I found this to be disappointing as I was too weak to go out for a snack at that time.
