It was such a fun experience staying in a ryokan. It was our first time. I loved the tatami mat floors and the futon bed. Was especially neat that our room was right by a little garden. Room clean and simple. Staff was very friendly and there were helpful recommendations of places to visit in the city. The price was very good too for two people. Convenient location to Ojo station subway as well, which was one stop from Kyoto station. The check-in office was a short walk away. Map provided at the address of where we actually stayed on how to get there.

Not a problem for us, but would have been unable to store luggage. Not right in the middle of the most historic areas so it took about 20-30 min to travel to some of the temples we wanted to see.

We liked the authentic atmosphere, the easy to access location, the cute guide book in English they provided, and everything overall. The powerful AC in the summer was wonderful. Because we slept on futon we had more room to sleep than some hotels we'd stayed at in other parts of Japan. We had a private room with its own bathroom and honestly the fact they were able to fit the bathroom in such a tight space was impressive! We only stayed one night and weren't charged for towels so I think I misunderstood other reviews - they charge you to switch out your towels not just for a basic set of towels. check in and check out were wonderfully easy.

If we had stayed more than a night I might have found the futon/floor too uncomfortable but my husband was fine!

The neighbourhood was really quiet, calm and nice to take a walk. The Ryokan has a really good location in the city. Also, the ryokan is really nice and traditional.

Even in the Booking page of the Ryokan warns you about the noises and to stay calm and quiet, there was a room in the Ryokan that was taking a party till late and, of course, you hear everything and you cannot sleep. For sure this is not a problem of the Ryokan, is people's fault, as they were unpolite and disrespectful. However, I notified at the reception and they take care of the problem. After this, everything was fine :)

Ryokan Yuu had the authentic traditional Ryokan experience that we were looking for. The bedding and linens were clean and fresh and the newly remodeled bathrooms / showers were wonderful. I literally had my best night's sleep in months on the pillow-soft futon...I don't think I moved all night! :) My kids loved the tatami rooms and futons...it was like a big sleepover. The air conditioners in each room was a lifesaver in the steamy hot July weather.

It's a bit of a hike from the nearest station (15-20 minute walk), but it is close to many bus stations. The toilet room in one of the units did have a mildly odd smell like the sewage system may have been slightly backed up.

Bathroom- Exceptional well done. There is a television in the bath-tub which was unexpected and my kids love the surprise. Overall stay was 9/10. Loved the authentic and aesthetic Japanese ryokan style which is a unqiue and pleasant experience. HIghly recommend for anyone travelling to Kyoto to experience Japanese ryokan stay. Our family stayed in Maisonette- truly enjoyed our private apartment, which is almost like a serviced apartment with mini kitchen space, living area and our own bedrooms. On top of that, we had our own private Onsen which was relaxing and another must-do experience in Japan.

Takes about 15mins to walk to nearest train station- Karasuma Station. Otherwise, 8 mins for bus journey to Kyoto major station Overall ok except it was raining during our stay in Kyoto and caused inconvenience for young family travelling.

Our stay in this traditional wooden ryokan was a fantastic experience! The staff welcomed us and explained the rules. We were given a cute little book where everything was written down very clearly. The interior of our apartment was very traditional but also had all the modern necessities like a fridge, microwave, and all possible kitchen equipment. Futons felt like sleeping on a cloud - definitely, the best sleeping experiences we had in Japan! The bathroom was also typically Japanese and included a shower where you could wash and a bathtub where you could relax. Breakfast was delicious and filling. There is a possibility to store the luggage in the reception for a 1500 yen fee per luggage item. I totally recommend this place!

It was a bit cold in the apartment but turning on the AC in the heating mode and a hot bath helped a lot. The sleeping rooms and toilet are on the second floor where you need to get through the steep stairs - it wasn't a problem for us but elderly people may have issues.

Very very kind and helpful staff! Check in and check out was very uncomplicated. When we needed a taxi to get to the station they were very attentive and arranged something for us to get there with our big luggage! In general a good location (had our first dinner in Kyoto at a small izakaya just around the corner) and very pleasant stay. Everything’s was clean and well kept. The futons were comfy and we had no issues sleeping on them. Breakfast was very light and delicious it is served in the restaurant/cafe next to reception and we can only recommend trying it out if possible!

Rooms in Japan tend to be on the smaller side, so with two people each having a big and a small suitcase it was tough to fit everything in, let alone open one big suitcase fully to rummage through stuff. But other than that it was still very good.

The staff were incredible. The daily steamed Japanese breakfast was phenomenal and healthy. The breakfast chef was a joy. Despite the walls being thin, it was a peaceful location. Convenient to mass transit.

As mentioned elsewhere, mattresses on the floor are on the thin side. Continually removing shoes to get to your room can get old, so, bring flip flops. I got the single room in the "attic" with the severely slanted roof. I am short and can imagine how difficult it would be for taller people. They will never walk across the room I was in without hitting a rafter or the hanging lamp. The property is older and "rustic" with lots of aged character so adjust expectations; however, the toilet and shower set up were newer.

The room and bathroom were fine. I wish I hd chosen a room facing the sea rather than the parking lot. It might have been a little bit more but waking to the bay would have been a perk. The dinning experience was exceptionable. The staff of the dinning room were attentive, and helpful. The food was a delight. I took advantage of there onset, it was clean and the water was perfect.

Room faced a poking to for buses and staff.

Very big apartment. Very classic Japanese feeling. We enjoyed it a lot.

They were really insistent with the "don't make noise" policy... And yet our neighbors were really noisy... There is a locked "paper" door that separates apartments, and blocks no noise at all. Once night we had drunk Japanese neighbours, and another night there was a cry-all-night baby... Not ideal. Also, the toilet seat was tiny (even for Japanese standards). The locking code and the key to the apartment are very flimsy (our neighbors closed it wrong twice... And the lock is one push from opening, not even a kick). I know Japan is really safe, but it was a bit unnerving...
