This is a beautiful little ryokan in Kyoto. We had a great time in the area, and the facilities were clean, spacious for the room we got, and just what we needed. The staff were friendly and we overall had a great time!

Do not plan on doing your laundry here, the machine is small and loads take forever to dry. We got caught in the rain on the day we did laundry, and it was not in the building we stayed in. So it was a long day of going back and forth waiting for the laundry to dry.

Location was excellent. The room was clean. Cosy warm comfortable futon and bedding. Soft adequate towels and toiletries. Bathroom facilities were excellent. Secure room and polite staff. The kettle was functional and the staff kindly clarified directions on Google maps on advance which made finding it a breeze considering Kyoto's beehive network of narrow identical looking streets.

On the second night for some reason the hot water was inconsistent and suddenly switched to cold. Not sure if it's because there's a limit to hot bath water or I messed up the controls unknowingly. The stairs were a bit narrow and steep. Which made it a little difficult to carry a suitcase up and down..

The ryokan is in a lovely residential neighbourhood, dotted with small shops and local restaurants. Very fun to walk around. Easy to walk to 7-eleven or fresco's for more substantial groceries. It's a short walk to the Higashi Hongan-ji temple and the Nishi Hongan Temple. We did not eat at their restaurant. We found delicious sushi at Tomisen and Ishisei and great lunch and dinner at Makoto no Yu Hanaguruma, which is also an onsen. The air conditioning in the room was just right and so quiet! It's been very hot! We highly recommend Roman Kan.

This Ryukan is located just around 15 minutes on foot from Kyoto Station. (There is also a bicycle rental not far away.) The atmosphere is great. The staff is very kind and helpful. The room located on the first floor was for one person spacious enough, private toilet and shower is convenient. A good place to rest after the days touring around. The main thing you need to know is mentioned before: the room has just doors of paper, as well as the other rooms on the floor. They also offer earplugs. I was well prepared as usual while traveling, and had no problem with this at all. You can book seperately a nice breakfast (japanese style), three different choices. It is served just next door in a small and very nice restaurant place. I loved to stay there and would definitely stay there again.

Roman Kan is situated in a pittoresque and quiet area, still very near Kyoto station and many bus/metro lines, very convinient. Helpful staff, ryokan feeling, cozy beds. Hot, plentiful japanese breakfast served in a beautiful small cafe with a view to a tiny garden.

The only problem were noisy neigbourgs in the next room (thin walls) after a bar night continying the party. We woke up 1.30 and finally had to go and knock at their door. Apparently the personnel was not in the buildning. The remaining three nights so problems whatsoever.

I loved this property, I would have lived here if I could have haha. There is a beautiful open garden surrounded by glass walls and dark wooden walkways. The restaurant is excellent, the staff are very knowledgeable in English, they provide excellent advice and suggestions for activities. My room here was one of my favourites, having a balcony that opened up with large windows into my room was like a dream. I love traditional Japanese homes and ryokans, and this ryokan provided the perfect environment.

The only thing I “didn’t like” about the property had nothing to do with the property itself, but with former guests. When I looked around my room I could see numerous black scuff marks from what appeared to be from suitcases on the walls and tatami mats. It made me feel disappointed that guests have not been treating the rooms with appropriate care and consideration. Tatami mat weaving is an art and should be well cared for, and scuffing up walls where you’re being accommodated as a guest gives tourists a bad reputation.

nice staff and location

The actual stay was hard to find, the address led us to a street close by, but not the exact front. Best to google maps Romankan as one word

It was a very nice experience sleeping on a futon. The room was very quiet and clean. The interior as well as the common spaces were cozy and had indeed the touch of the traditional Japanese style housing. The staff were responsive and kind, communicating in English was easy. Moreover, umbrellas as well as extra toiletry products were also available. All in all, a very pleasant stay.

We had a small issue with the toilet door that sometimes refused to slide open but nothing a small quick repair wouldn't fix

Everything! Clean, homely, comfortable, such friendly and helpful staff. A great location in easy walking of lots of the temples, shrines, palaces and the castle, as well as the Gion district. Tatami mat room simple luxury - futon beds the comfiest we’ve had throughout our Japan visit so far, and the shower appears small but is mighty! Gorgeous hot and powerful shower. Delicious Japanese breakfast too - definitely worth experiencing! Fantastic stay, thank you so much team Roman Kan!

Nothing!

Beautiful ryokan and very comfortable! The apartment was easily accessible und is located fairly close to Kyoto main station in a calm area. Somehow we slept better on the floor here than on other beds in Japan. It was also very clean and spacious (for Japanese standards).

The basin is located outside of the restroom and the shower, which is a little unfortunate but no problem overall.
