Great traditional ryokan that I can recommend to anyone! Nice staff, really good japanese style breakfast, beautiful rooms and so much more. I used the ryokan’s onsen every morning and night. Also great location as Zenkōji temple is located right next to the ryokan. 5/5 stars!

Cute little ryokan in an amazing location, right by Zenkoji Temple on the shopping street leading up to the temple. I can't emphasize enough how great the location is, you really can't do better if you want to stay near the temple area. Staff was extremely friendly, polite and helpful. The Japanese style breakfasts were very tasty and filling.

The breakfast start time options were 7, 7:30 or 8am which were all a little too early for us -- if the latest serving was at 9am it would have been preferable (we're on vacation after all). The room could use one additional lamp. The ceiling light was extremely bright and the wall lamp was quite dim so it would have been nice to have an additional lamp on the other side of the room so we wouldn't have to keep the ceiling light on constantly.

If I could give 100 stars to this ryokan, I would do it! It was absolutely stunning experience in Nagano, the whole family and staff are extremely friendly, kind and polite. They receive lots of international travelers and they understand tourists needs. You MUST book dinners and breakfasts with them! It was amazing experience! On a practical note: rooms were authentic, hot water, heater were reliable. Location is superb, close to the temple and delicious snacks. This place is ideal for alternative travelers interested in local tradition and with the appreciation for culture and history: I wish the owners only the best customers!

Staff was very kind and helpful, green tea in room had great quality and the snacks as well. Nice and traditional old house to visit for some nights. We did not try their breakfast or dinner, thus cannot judge on that.

It was very very loud in the morning. First morning, from 6am onwards, other guests and staff were discussing in front of our room door which felt like they were standing in our bed. Walls and doors have zero noise protection. Second morning at 6:45am staff was placing mugs on wooden tablets, preparing for all rooms, again right in front of our door. It shook us out of our sleep, both days we were very tired as we woke up roughly. Please be considerate of people being on holiday who do not wish to be woken up. Some other room had also "wake-up service" but that service was so loud, that we heard it as well. Even though it was all beautiful, we would not come again as we love to relax and sleep on our holiday.

Excellent location for travelers. 2 blocks away from the Main Gate entrance of Zenkoji Temple. One, if not the friendliest most amazing staff I have ever encounter at any stay around the world. This Ryokan looked to be taken care of/run by 3 generations of amazing people. The meals where amazing! The room was clean, comfortable. Amazing Japanese architecture (including the traditional style Japanese rooms). Unfortunately my wife was not feeling too good one of the mornings we stayed and the staff was so accommodating and friendly to her during breakfast.

Are you looking for a traditional japanese experience!? Please do yourself a favor and dont look any further! Book this traditional ryokan in the heart of Nagano! Our stay was PERFECT! The staff goes far and beyond to make your stay exceptional! They make you feel part of the experience! We booked a japanese style room, spacious for two people and beautiful! Very good amenities and the futons were very comfortable ! I dont eat fish and they accomodate dinner and breakfast for my needs no problem! The position is superb, right in the heart of the Zenkoji temples complex and 20 minutes walk from the station!

Amazing location within minutes walk to the Zenko-ji temple. Actually on Nakamise dori but surprisingly quiet inside the Ryokan. Lovely owners with a friendly, welcoming greeting when we arrived. Happy to help us with all our requests. Traditional Ryokan with tatami floors. Booked the larger room - had loads of space. Comfortable western beds. TV, kettle, fridge. There is a spa room within the Ryokan. Booking has breakfast & evening meals if required. Breakfast is traditional Japanese.

The Ryokan's owner and wife had been very friendly and welcoming during my stay, with prompt reply to my inquiries even before my stay. Having traveled to Nagano straight after a red-eye flight, I really appreciate the fact that they allowed me to check-in earlier on that day. The Ryokan is located very near to Zenko-ji Temple, allowing you to avoid the crowd to visit the Temple in the early morning. The Ryokan is also a 20min simple walk away from Nagano station. The Ryokan is equipped with modern facilities while preserving the traditional Ryokan vibe, ensuring a comfortable stay. The food served were delectable and hearty, with an impressive variety.

Everything about this place! The atmosphere is great, almost magical, the location is perfect, so close to the famous temple and in such a nice area of Nagano (although "further" from the city life, but let's be honest, it's much better to be close to a temple than next to a station!). We had breakfast included and it was served quite early. Breakfast was good and kept us filled for hours, although keep in mind it's traditional Japanese breakfast so mostly savory dishes. The staff was nice and very helpful whenever we had a question or request. Overall, we'd go back!

The coffee at breakfast was not really good :) I missed some good coffee.

Jizokan Matsuya Ryokan is located within the important Zenkō-ji Temple precinct amongst a mass of shrines, smaller temples, restaurants and stores, and is a short walk from the bus that you can catch from Nagano Station. Our room was spacious and overlooked Zenkōji Nakamise Street - see the attached photos. The beds were firm but very comfortable and we had a separate bathroom and toilet. The three generations of host family were warm and welcoming and helped make our stay one of our best on this trip. We had a green tea service set up in the room both days with yummy local sweets, and the two breakfasts and the Kaseki-style dinner were very good. We were able to store our bags before and check-in and after checking out, and they even let us use a bathroom to change before we headed for Tokyo and the flight home later in the afternoon. While the area was busy during the day - Zenkō-ji is one of the most important Buddhist temples in Japan and somewhere every Japanese person strives to visit at least once in their life - in the mornings until about 09:30 and in the evenings it quietens right down. Nagano is a perfect little slice of Japan, and Jizokan Matsuya Ryokan is a perfect place to stay while there.
