Designer Cottage was a great value for Christchurch! The room was super cute and cozy. I loved the garden and outdoor table. There are lots of food options nearby. Breakfast was nice and the owner was very accommodating to my special dietary needs (gluten free and dairy free). He also provided plug adapters when mine stopped working and arranged for my early morning taxi to the airport.

The mattress sagged a bit and was also lacked cushioning; the pillows were flat. (I admit I'm picky.) Though downtown Christchurch is easily walkable, it's on a busy street and much of the walk is not that pleasant. These complaints are minor -- I would still stay there again!

The best part of this accommodation is Chet, owner. I have stayed in countless b-n-b types and he is the only one to exceed my expectations that started upon arrival. His warm caring manner with abundant locale info gave me what I needed to get oriented to the city. He gave me a choice of rooms. The breakfast room was delightful with plenty of cold foods to choose from along with lovely coffee choices. Chet did a great job of giving all guests attention during breakfast and joined the conversation at the table.

As I left the property, I suggested that a table lamp be added to the room…the lighting was overhead and hard to read by.

Nothing not to like in our opinion

The property is nice just like its name, with a small well designed front garden and side entrance. Breakfast was quite good with healthy food and good choices of a continental variety. Friendly host and guests for nice chat at meal time. Close to bus routes and easier for those that do not drive.

Had to leave before the breakfast time for a flight, and would appreciate a bit packaged food to take with me. I did ask for/was given a yogurt that I did not use the day before. Would appreciate it as a regular offer like in other places I visited in the past.

It was a delight to stay at Designer Cottage and the cottage could not be faulted in any way shape or form. The owner was very obliging and went out of his way to accommodate us which was greatly appreciated. It was a pleasure to communicate him and he was extremely timely in his responsiveness. We would have no reservations in booking to stay there on our return trips to Christchurch. It would in fact be our accommodation of choice compared to other places we have stayed when visiting Christchurch.

The landlord is very friendly and helpful. He prepared the breakfast each morning for his guests in a separate dining room, All were seated around a large table, which encouraged nice small-talk amongst the guests. The breakfast comprised mostly local food of high quality. The cottage comprises a very nice back garden and a kitchen that can be used by all guests. It is located in a residential area and it was therefore quiet at night.

There were actually no downsides.

Chett and Steve were fantastic - I can't say enough about them and their cutest BnB that I have ever stayed in. We were exhausted after spending hours on a redirected flight from Brisbane due to the flooding in Auckland and sleeping in the airport waiting for answers from China Airlines (which never came by the way) and they were so kind to let us come in early. I can't thank them enough for their kindness and accommodating an extraordinary circumstance. The rooms and the 2 bedroom cottage we stayed in were extremely comfortable, just those extra touches like wonderfully scented soap and offering fresh tomatoes growing in their garden. Ask them what to see and do in Christchurch - everything we tried was perfect. Great conversations when we wanted, not imposing. Don't hesitate to stay at this wonderful gem of a home away from home.

Check in was a breeze. Steve was a call away and showed us around. He provided a map and recommended some dining spots. Our ensuite room was nicely heated up prior to our arrival which was lovely. The room was cosy and clean. We slept very well and woke up to breakfast waiting for us in the dining area. There is a designated parking spot if you are driving and it’s next to your room so you can load/unload your stuff easily. We will definitely come back here if we visit CHC again! It was a big room and comfortable, very friendly staff, was clean and well decorated. Most of all, we liked breakfast. It was served between 8 to 9, so all guests came to eat together and there was a really good atmosphere. The breakfast itself is mainly muesli, toasts, butter and jams. The owner made the toasts and hot drinks so all guests only sat and talked with each other while eating.

The location is pretty far from the city center - about 30 min walk. There are restaurants and things nearby, but not the best quality. We had the room upstairs, with a shared bathroom and shower. There is 1 shower+toilet room shared by 2 rooms, so it was pretty tight getting into it. Because our room was upstairs, it was uncomfortable to go downstairs to it, and the toilet/shower is just next to the kitchen, so it fills weird passing next to other guests on the way there/ from there. Also, our door broke and was only fixed after our departure. The floor cricks and because it is a rag it fills a bit dirty.

Hosts were lovely, very friendly and helpful. Room was a little dated but fairly spacious and the shower was great (hot and powerful). Good breakfast eaten around a table with other guests which provided an opportunity to meet others. An added bonus was having an electric blanket!

Our room backed onto a shower room used by another guest and they used it intermittently throughout the night with total disregard for anyone else causing regular noise nuisance - this was obviously not the hosts fault but resulted in lack of sleep. Also the accommodation was a bit further away from the city centre than thought.
