December 2024
We had a one night stopover in Swellendam on a family holiday from the UK to the Western Cape and had an excellent stay at Aan de Oever Guest House. We had three rooms booked, one for my wife and I and two for my three teenage children, and the quality and comfort of each of them was great. Breakfast was excellent too, with a good range of food and attentive service. We were also impressed by the nice touches provided of having our hire car washed and being supplied with muffins for our onward journey at checkout. The property is rated as a 4 star but we did not pay too much for our 3 rooms, so we thought our stopover was excellent value. Weâd definitely visit again if nearby.
Nothing - our only regret was staying just the one night!

Hosts exceeded our high expectations. The accommodation was spacious, clean, comfortable and had almost everything we needed. The grounds were well maintained and the situation on the river was lovely. My husband enjoyed the birdlife at the feeders. There was no noise at night so we slept very well. The breakfast buffet was delicious and had something for everyone of my picky eaters. In the morning, our car was washed and ready for us to go. The staff was attentive and available but not in your face. We loved the location in the historic part of town just a couple minutes walk to the shops and restaurants. Canât wait to return someday!
It was truly perfect, but only complaint is that I couldnât find the coffee mugs in Fish Eagle and had to improvise.

The sight was close enough to restaurants & historic sites that we could walk. The breakfast room was nice; it was a little chilly that morning so they had a fire going in the old fireplace, which was lovely. Breakfast was good. Nice facilities; they had a pool, but it was too chilly for us to use it. It was fall and the leaves were turning - it was beautiful. The woman in reception made a dinner reservation for us, which was appreciatedđ.
The mattress was a little uncomfortable, but not too bad. They had a nice tub, which was located in the open room which was a little unusual, but it worked.

Swellendem is a tiny and very pretty town on the garden route. This beautiful property is located in a very nice part of the town, and a stream runs right by it! Some of the rooms have kitchenette facilities(like ours did), which is very nice, coz the town does not have many eating places, and unless reserved, most do not have available tables. The rooms are well appointed and clean. The property is beautiful, has several coffee shops at walking distance.
The load shedding that is ubiquitous all over South Africa, has some of the most inconvenient timings in Swellendem. Which is not really under the guest house's control, but stating here for advanced information of travellers. The load shedding time included the breakfast time, which means toasters won't work, coffee dispensing machines may have issues, room kettles won't work etc.

We have stayed at Aan de Oever on a number of occasions and hopefully, we will stay there again. The accommodation is within an easy walk into town and restaurants. The staff are great and full of advice on where to go and what restuarants are good. Our room was lovely and there were so many little special touches that made you feel very welcome, flowers on the bed and in the bathroom between the flannels on the bath. Also, the toiletries are lovely. Breakfast is great. We"ll definitly be going back there.
There was nothing not to like.

So very helpful .We asked for a taxi to take us to a restaurant. JaunNita a fun jolly wife of taxi driver arrived.took us to where we asked.came back later to take us to a super French restaurant of her choice after she called to book a table for us.then again to take us back .all for 150 rand. Obviously gave her more. I can't remember the name of the restaurant but all the locals know it. Do ask for Juanita

Secluded, yet a few steps away from the new part of town with lovely little shops and coffee shops/restaurants. The guest house is extremely well run, and the staff knows their stuff!! The breakfasts were absolutely delicious, and the compliimentary car wash was much appreciated. Lovely garden and many cozy spots to relax with a book.
We loved every minute of our time at Aan De Oever. :)

Homely accommodation with extras, honesty bar in your room, block out blinds hidden behind the curtains, electric blanket for the cold night, aircon for the warm days, complimentary still and sparkling water, a choice of filter coffee, tea. Breakfast a big choice from yoghurt to a farm breakfast served with a smile, save parking behind gates
Room downstairs can hear the room upstairs moving, walking, stomping

Stunning views and well located in Swellendam. The staff were extremely accommodating and the breakfast was superb! We stayed in the loft room and had a lovely view of the mountains and the river which runs along the property. Will definitely be coming back.
There is a stark contrast between the lower rooms and the upper rooms but little difference in price. I would recommend if you're coming here you stay in the lofts. The downstairs rooms are cold and uncomfortable and we upgraded to the loft on arrival. We were lucky they had a room.

Pretty location with excellent views of the mountain. Within walking distance of an interesting part of town. A nice collection of rooms with a decent buffet breakfast in the morning. Loved having a bath in the open bedroom. Very deep and comfortable.
In the open plan bathroom the sink was quite smelly when water went down. We ran a bath (which was great) but afterwards we noticed a bit of leakage from some of the pipes under the bath.
