We stayed in one of the cottages and it was really lovely. We were on a B&B basis, so went to the main hotel for breakfast. I didn't feel that the breakfast selection was as vast as I have had in many other hotels, but there was something for everyone, and the dining room staff did say if there was anything additional we required we could order and they would ask the chef to accommodate! We also had dinner on the first night at the hotel which was nice, the second evening we went to a little hotel/pub called the Hazeldean, which was 5 minutes away. The staff at the hotel were mostly very accommodating, and friendly, I did ask at reception if they could provide me with a black bin bag, which I needed to cover some of my paper shopping bags from the heavy rain outside, but was informed that they didn't have anything, I walked a few steps to the bar/restaurant area and asked the girl there and she was more than happy to provide me with one! The cottages we stayed in are just a short walk from the main hotel and across the road from the Gretna Green blacksmith shop and shopping area, we were also just a 20 minute walk from the Gretna shopping outlets, so the location was very good. I would definitely stay here again.
There wasn't much we didn't like, we really enjoyed our stay! The only thing I would say is that eating at the main hotel was a little bit expensive for what you get!

Good location, rooms comfortable, and clean Reception staff welcoming and exceptionally friendly
Waiting staff, in our view, require a little more training, they don’t clear the table of empty glasses, bottles and unnecessary crockery extra, which results in a cluttered table with very little room left to place the next course On our first stay 4/01/24 in Thistle Suite the heated towel rail wasn’t working on arrival and this took about an hour to sort On our seconded stay 12/01/24 Room 10 (on the quiet side of the hotel!) , late evening there was a loud droning sound from outside our window which appeared to be coming from the extractor fans on the roof, staff didn’t seem to know what to do or how to stop it. Also the fire alarm went off which turned out to be a false alarm but the staff on duty didn’t know how to switch it off. Lastly the tap over the basin was very loose.

The hotel is very good once we solved the booking problem.
On arrival the reception said we were not book into a room in the main building. They told us we had booked a room in a cottage opposite, across a main road! This was not acceptable and after my protest a room was found in the hotel. We have used hotel before without a problem. Any change to the booking must be clearly notified to the customer before arrival. Crossing the road in the dark to go to restaurant is a no no, particularly as we are an elderly couple. However the matter was resolved eventually.

Arrived at Smiths after a long day of travelling with small children, to be met by the friendliest lady in reception who booked us in quickly and made dinner reservations for us. Made our way to leave our bags in the most beautiful little cottage, that felt homely and cosy and then headed back to the restaurant for a meal. Food was delicious, well priced and staff were excellent, very attentive and helpful. Great cocktails at the bar, again well priced and entire facility is clean and modern. Loved our stay so much we booked a return visit before we had even checked out.

Stayed on way to Scotland to break up journey. Stayed in one of the apartments that are a little way from the main hotel. These were extremely large comfortable spaces. While we were only there for one night, would happily have spent a fully holiday staying in the room. Has the added benefit of being across the road from the blacksmith's complex which makes it easy to explore at night where nobody's there. Breakfast was really good and plentiful. Every member of staff that we met was lovely.
Not a criticism, but hadn't been aware that the apartments would need us to drive there. So we unpacked our bags from the car to check in, only to re-pack them to head over to our apartment. If you're staying in one of them, leave your bags in the car during check-in!

We had a great stay at Smiths, The people could not have been more friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble and it made our stay delightful as though that was not enough our room was outstanding and the food was terrific we had a wonderful evening meal and breakfast was ideal.
They are doing some work and during our stay there was no lift - the hotel had advised us well in advance and kept us fully informed - it will be ideal when finished but we did have to climb stairs with luggage.

The room was very comfortable, but there was only one comfy chair and one dining style chair which meant one of us had to lie on the bed or sit on a hard chair. The restaurant was very good and the food was tasty. The staff were very attentive and helpful. Breakfast was very good and there was plenty of choice. The hotel is very nice and we would return, it was just a little too far out of the centre of Gretna Green.
Well not really anything, its a good place but it was just a bit out of the centre of town for our liking.

This was an over night stop to break up a long journey. It was very relaxing and it did what we had hoped. The size of the standard room was fabulous, the reception staff were warm and friendly, the size of the bed was great and the pillows and mattress were extremely comfortable. The lighting throughout the hotel and in the bedroom gave a feeling of luxury, and the car chargers were available on arrival and fast charging with different charger options available. The amount of space in communal areas allowed the hotel to feel quiet and relaxing. Breakfast was of a good quality with a satisfying range of freah and cooked items. There were some limits to the menu range for dietary requirements but this was acceptable for what we were looking for. The bedroom had a separate desk and table (for tea making facilities). The room also had an iron, hairdryer and safe. Other lovely aspects to the hotel included a sculpture in the grounds and proximity to the Gretna Green Blacksmiths.
The only things that could be criticised were that the towel rail involved stretching across the toilet, limited range of tea bag options in the room, unable to order drinks from the bar without the cardboard room key holder and the lift juddered when moving. As a hotel in a renowned tourist area and just over the border, porridge as one if the breakfast options would have been a lovely touch.

Room was a lovely size - the balcony was a bonus.Breakfast was delicious as was our evening meal.
The rooms were far too hot. The radiators were blasting out throughout the hotel despite it being warm outside so had to turn it off. Even then the room was too hot - luckily we could open the French doors onto the balcony in the middle of the night. When we mentioned this when checking out we were told fans were available if we had asked. Guests should have been offered fans on arrival. Bedside light did not work either.
