Lovely welcoming staff and dog friendly which was fab. Also very good at catering for my dairy intolerance - they had a clear menu that showed what I could and couldn’t have. Nothing felt like too much trouble. The breakfast was delicious! And they cooked a couple of sausages for my pooch. Would definitely stay again
Dog friendly which was amazing… nothing wrong with the property at all. One tiny comment - which is just feedback - we recently stayed at The Duke of Burford and they had a welcome pack for my pooch including a water bowl for the room. Obviously not a major issue(!) - just felt like it could be a small bit nice touch here too

A very friendly welcome. Our room was huge with a very comfortable bed and a big, deep bath which was lovely. Both of our breakfasts were delicious! Very accommodating with dietary requirements. The gluten free bread was really yummy! We had an evening meal here and the food was incredible. The chocolate mousse is a must! Along with some yummy seasonal cocktails. Unexpectedly, there was a Jazz band playing and they were amazing. They were fascinating to watch and played a variation of songs including ones we all knew. It felt like a private concert! And,of course, not forgetting the super lovely pub dog which made my day. Thanks for a fabulous time, we would definitely come to stay/ eat here again.
Nothing to dislike about our experience!

Interesting hotel. Nice rural location, with pleasant grounds, extensive free parking. Friendly helpful staff. Some issues with bathroom plumbing, which were noted and hopefully fixed for the next guests. The steep narrow external stairs to access our room were a challenge with bags, and would prohibitively challenging for less able guests. Noise was an issue early on the first morning, seemed to be early bin collection, and what appeared to be inconsiderate guests with large barking dogs early in the morning. Overall a good experience, but could be improved by the absence of the aforementioned. Good cooked breakfast, with individual requirement kindly fulfilled. Excellent coffee on first morning, strangely not so on second morning. Nice restaurant.
Bathroom very small. Plumbing for sink in bathroom not actually sealed! Opening the ‘plug’ resulted in a flooded bathroom, and shower unit not sealed, resulting in more leaks. Noisy bins banging at 6am! accompanied by barking dogs! Lunch was ok, nice restaurant with nice countryside view (outside seating also available) but would have been better if salting left to consumer, far too much salt on chips pre-salted by chef! Staff seemed ‘busy’, so completing one job at a time is usually best, and good idea to ensure the waiter knows what food is being served each day. Rustic bathroom decor is an acquired taste. The lighting in the bedroom extremely poor, and in bathroom was very poor, woefully inadequate, and ‘illuminated’ mirror didn’t.

This was an absolutely amazing pub with rooms. As soon as we entered, we were greeted warmly and immediately shown to our rooms, which were beautifully decorated, very well furnished and extremely comfortable. We were even given a little flask with fresh milk to be able to make a drink in our room. We returned to the bar and I have to say, the cocktails were fabulous. It was such a lovely warm relaxed failing in the bar that we felt very much at home. We went out for the evening and returned once again to spend a couple of hours in the bar. We had a fabulous night’s sleep in an extremely comfortable bed and breakfast in the morning was again, superb. We would have no hesitation in staying at this pub again and look forward to returning sometime in the very near future.
There was nothing to dislike.

I loved the spacious clean room and the view of the farm field. They provided us with americano coffee's in the morning that we could take back to our room and enjoy the view. The food was amazing and I highly recommend Sunday Roast dinners. The breakfast was items off the menu. All menu items were fresh and cooked to order. Other Inns we stayed at offered cold options on a buffet. Crab and Boar was exceptional as Pub and Inn goes. I highly recommend it.
The road could get a little noisy at commute times but quiet the rest of the time.

We try to use a range of properties around the area and this was our first time staying at the Crab and Boar. We had eaten here donkeys years ago but had no expectations of what it would be like. Have to say, what a fabulous location. It is 5 minutes from Newbury but is a rural idyll. We ate Sunday Roast, the last two of the day, and we both agreed it was the best we had eaten in a long long time. It isn't cheap, but you don't go to places like the C&B for a cut price meal. Everything was spot on. We had a bottle of Rose fizz for around £33 [Prosecco] and again it was top quality, which for £33 at a restaurant these days is hit and miss. We also had desert as we got confused by the set menu [probably the Prosecco] and again perfect. I was a bit shocked I paid £16 for a cheese plate, but in reality it would have cost £16 to buy the cheese at Waitrose, and the cracker bread with it, home made and warm, was literally something I would go back for. The room we had was excellent. My only issue, caused by me booking the cheapest room, was it was on the road. Not sure I had bothered to check when I booked, it could have said, but I would have paid more to not be on it if told or asked at reception on check in. A little tip to small hotels. If you have a nicer room free then ask people checking in if they fancy an upgrade for say half the difference. I would have snapped it up. Room was spot on for the money. Couldn't fault anything. The staff were 100% exemplary at all time. Nothing too much trouble. Friendly. Smiles. Excellent. And then breakfast, which in our case was included. Cooked English; you won't find better in Berkshire. Everything was 100% quality. You know it was great quality because it didn't taste like the normal produce on offer at most hotels. Even the baked beans were home made. So, we will be going back for Sunday Roast. I would even head there on a Sunday morning just for a cooked breakfast. Spot on.
Offer an upgrade if you have them. I would have gone for it. Apart from that. Nothing bad at all to complain of.

Staff were great, dinner fantastic and overall good atmosphere. The service from Rebecca was exceptional and the food from Réne was just amazing. Thanks also to Dave and the staff for making our stay memorable.
Lack of access to transport. I think it would be appropriate for the facility to advise customers about the fact that transport options areextremelo limited. No Uber or bus service and it is not possible to walk to Newbury even though it is relatively close due to there being no verge on the roads. The facility also needs a bit of maintenance in areas.

I love old character buildings so this hotel was perfectly charming & full of original features. The room was just lovely with a good choice of different teas, ground coffee, cookies & even an ice bucket. Yes, the paint was peeling from the wooden window frames but that added the charm for me. Bathroom was amazing with underfloor heating & massive shower. Comfortable bed & plenty of storage. I enjoy fine dining & the menu looked wonderful. I would certainly stay there again…
The only disappointment for my sister and I was that our evening meal had been over salted. We ordered steak which itself was beautiful however the chips & fried curly kale were impossible to eat. After calling for the manager and asking her to try the food she gave a 50% reduction. Personally, I would have preferred not to have paid for the steak and order another dish as we were still hungry. As we needed to depart early we ordered a takeaway breakfast in writing and specified no salt. Our sausage/bacon bap was lovely but in a separate bag was a homemade hash brown with Himalayan salt clinging to every side.

I took my husband to Highclere castle for his birthday and wanted somewhere to stay close by. The food was lovely! and the location was very nice. The manager was very chatty and friendly, and I would definitely recommend this pub
It was just very small things like the radiator in the bedroom was staring to come apart, I noticed that first when we went into the room, and just cosmetic things like the bathroom needed repainting. But I will say, the manager hadn't been working there that long, so Ill give her some credit

Beautiful old hotel with nice staff. Room was a good size and had everything we needed. The underfloor heating was a lovely surprise too.
We found the menu overpriced for what it was and not varied enough for dinner. No wild boar despite the name is a wasted opportunity! There could have been some music in the restaurant. Our room was facing the road and you could hear the cars quite loudly late into the night and again early morning. The four posted bed without the top just looked strange and off.
