Beautiful, wild location. Resort very low key, and would never be crowded. Couples massages on the beach were great (Hanalei Day Spa, on site), and the onsite restaurant was great (Opakapaka Grill).
Be aware that it is in a fairly remote location, and you have to cross about 5 one-lane bridges to get from Hanalei to the resort. The restaurant is not always open, so keep some food on hand (particularly since heavy rains can close one or more bridges).

Everything!! 1. Location: océan front , you can walk by the beach to tunel beach and Haena beach park, the two most beautiful beaches both me and my mom ever saw (and we are Brazilian and have travelled extensively in south east Asia, Brazil, Central America and the Caribbean). Also, from the hotel you can see the sunrise! The sun literally emerges from the sea in front of you. You need a car to get to all extra activities, but if you are travelling to Kawai you need one anyways. Bear in mind that throughout the island dinner options are limited, but, who cares?! The place is unique!! Can’t wait to be back 2. Our cottage was super comfortable! Almost too big for only the two of us. Simple luxury, everything we could have thought for was provided, but nothing was ostentatious! Kitchen with all amenities needed, bed super comfortable, beautiful view from the terrace (even if next time we will take the ocen front chalet), quiet and very clean! The terrace was also beautiful. 3. Staff was very pleasant and welcoming. Very kind and accommodating! We will definitely be back!!
Nothing major. Two small critics are: 1. It would be nice to get room service (I.e. change of towels and cleaning the chalet to remove sand and all), change the trash and clean the cuttlery. 2. Having longer reception hours would also be helpful. Or at least different ones. We ended up always leaving before they opened and came back after they left. Everything starts early on the island!

For those who appreciate natural beauty and a rustic environment, Hanalei Colony Resort is the best hotel in Hawaii. Here, one is surrounded by tranquility and beauty. It is like being transported back in time to an earlier Hawaii or even Tahiti. While a bit of weathering comes with the territory, and this is certainly not a five star resort for the instagram generation, the units are very comfortably and tastefully designed. And the swimming pool is like a private enclave, truly a gem.
The bathroom fixtures are quite dated. Due to the wild weather at this extraordinary location, of course there are elements of weathering visible in places. (For me this is part of the attraction, but for the type of person who enjoys chain hotel polish it might be an issue).

Location ++++ Falling asleep to the sound of the waves, sunrise from our deck, walks on the beach, swimming….and not having to go back into town for dinner. The restaurant on site has excellent poke & fish tacos. The premium rooms are worth the money for the spectacular views! PS no AC but the breeze is lovely and there are fans. Also no TV but you don’t want to be in front of a screen while you’re there!
Felt like we rushed through check in and only learned there is a shuttle service to/from town, restaurants, etc. toward the end of our stay. POSITIVELY everything else was great.

Magnificent resort in a magical setting. Room (premium ocean view) was spectacular. Was like a home away from home. Not having transport, we really appreciated the free shuttle: the drivers, Lehua and a fun young guy (sorry, name escapes me) were great company and founts of information about the area. Allowed us early check-in -- very nice.
To improve: Welcome drink on arrival (eg fruit juice) The blurb in advance requested information on special occasions, so i let them know about my wife's birthday, but apart from a "happy birthday" on arrival nothing else was done (ie no card, fruit basket, bottle of wine, flowers etc.) Why ask? Minor pecadiloes indeed

We loved the rural and primal vibe of this resort. It was the only time in the trip our family felt like we could really unplug and relax, while listening to the waves crash outside. The customer service is casual, cool, and went over the top to make us feel special and welcome.
Nothing. Know what you are getting yourself into though. This resort is meant to give you an independent experience to feel one with the land and disconnected, not a place for complete service head to foot. The North shore can be wild and rugged, especially in the winter, so as long as that's what you want, you will LOVE this place.

I loved that this is not your typical "resort". It is a refuge to exhale, relax, read a book, enjoy quality time with your family and friends, soak up the sun (and rain) on an unpopulated beach. It has a beautiful pool area, but I couldn't drag myself away from the Pacific Ocean and beach. The accommodations are perfectly in sync with the location. They have a relaxed, Hawaiian vibe, comfortable, and spacious, with a large lanai that took in the mountain and beach views.

The location and view from the room can't be beat. I absolutely loved the pool/pool house renovation and how close we were to the beaches and town. The staff were lovely and extremely helpful. The 1 bedroom was huge and very clean and had 2 bathrooms which was great. Incredible breezes which made for wonderful sleeping at night.
The room was a bit dated and smelled of old wood plus the carpet was in need of replacing. The bottom floor rooms has wood (or laminate) which would have been nice. Also there was lots of rust on anything that was metal (I know this happens being so close to the ocean) I think they can make some easy fixes to update the space. It would have been nice to have a restaurant open for lunch and a bar on site (maybe at the pool).

The staff were among the friendliest I've encountered in any of my travels - genuinely warm and welcoming. (Special shout out to Sierra who couldn't have given me a nicer introduction!) I loved the decor and comfort of the rooms as well as the onsite coffee shop. The pool house and related facilities were a major bonus. Having a laundry room was useful, and since I had a super late flight out, I appreciated having access to a shower so I could stay in the area and yet have a place to refresh before leaving. Though I didn't end up using it, I loved having the option of using the shuttle. It seemed very convenient!
I can't say that I personally minded this, but I imagine some would want to know that parts of the property are in a minor state of disrepair (e.g. paint on some of the buidlings is peeling, some boards may need replacing), but one can tell they are working on it and the overall appearance is still pleasing.

Location - The view from the room to the ocean is astonishing. Also it is very convenient that hotel is located at the beach and has a beach access. The road to the hotel with hairpin turns and one-lane bridges is a must experience. Room size and equipment - the room is more like an apartment with all needed kitchen appliances and staff to prep food
The hotel is outdated and has "old" smell
