This hotel surprised me. I thought it was going to be a dated old bed and breakfast but was surprised to find it fresh and modern while still keeping the old bones of the historic building. The decorative touches were charming as well as the friendly staff. The room was clean and comfortable.

The breakfast was expensive for what was provided. I had the sausage and biscuits, which was delicious. The orange juice tasted strange ( I am from Florida so I am used to great O.J.) and the coffee was cold with coffee grounds swirling around in the cup. I asked the waiter for a fresh cup which he eagerly provided. He was delightful. I would suggest you go into town for breakfast or ask for a fresh pot of coffee and stay away from the O.J.

This is a gorgeous property in a convenient location. We were literally around the corner from downtown and only 30 minutes away from the George Washington National Forest. There’s a great 1950’s American rock-a-billy style restaurant across the street that had great food and low prices hosting a classic car show. The rooms were bigger than what they appeared online and had 15ft ceilings. Both the bedding and bed itself were extremely comfortable and I had the best sleep. They have a flat screen tv mounted to the wall if you’re interested at looking at a show in the bed. The food was delicious. I ordered chocolate covered strawberries and rose petals and it was only $30. We also had the breakfast special 2 days for 2 people was only $35. The breakfast included bacon, sausage, eggs, fresh fruit, country biscuits with sausage gravy, an assortment of pastries, coffee, tea, and fresh squeezed orange juice. The staff was remarkable. Everyone was sweet and accommodating. They were warm but not too hovering. My husband and I were alone in the dining room eating breakfast and I told my husband I wasn’t feeling the music so the staff changed it to a great lo-fi instrumental mix. It was a really nice surprise. I didn’t know anybody had heard me nor did I expect someone to change the channel. The history of the hotel is fascinating it was a mental health institution and then a prison until 2005. Everything was renovated and felt extremely welcoming. The property has walking paths that you can explore. I was also told that they have an underground tunnel system which is interesting.

This is a quirky hotel, it has personality and a unique vibe. The room was very spacious, great location too. The staff was very welcoming and helpful.

The hotel kept sending a link to a pre-arrival online check-in which didn't work. Also, given that the hotel is not in a central location, it is nice that there is an onsite bistro, offering daily breakfast and dinner on weekends. The decor of the bistro is very nice, it even offers beautiful outdoor seating, but the menu is VERY VERY VERY limited, and unfortunately the food we had was just OK, definitely unexpected for a hotel this size and which appears to otherwise pay so much attention to every detail.

Loved everything about this place! From the awe - inspiring visual as you drive through the entrance, to the fast, super-friendly check in (I believe her name was Amber?) to the beautiful grounds and absolutely lovely room! Every member of the staff we encountered was beyond friendly. They made us feel so welcomed! We will definitely be back and we plan on bringing more friends and planning a longer visit!

I have to wrack my brain to think of something. The restaurant was out of country ham at breakfast. That was disappointing.

A heritage exterior, modern and well appointed interior; climb the spiral staircase to the skylight.

It’s such a small issue, but there needs to be better, actual signage to the car park. I came in the side road and spent 15 minutes trying to find the hotel amongst the similar looking buildings, including multiple laps of the traffic circle. Clear signs would have made the first impression much better.

The hotel has a tremendous amount of character. We enjoyed exploring the building and the grounds. We spoke to several couples who were making repeat visit as we were arriving, so that set the visit off on the right foot.

Understanding that there's the integration of more modern appointments into a historic building, the gaps in the door from the room to the hallway seemed a little large. Not terribly unsettling, but slightly unsettling. Sounds travel. In consideration of my neighbors on our floor and below, I couldn't help but feel compelled to walk quietly and whisper in the morning as getting ready to depart. I'll also add that if you're expecting a romantic trip, and will be on the ground floor, there are two shades. You may want to ensure that you've lowered the second shade before engaging in intimate relations.

A beautiful, majestic, one-of-a-kind hotel with a fascinating history. We booked last minute before rolling into town and initially thought we must’ve pulled into the wrong place. We were planning to stay in Staunton for a night only but ended up extending our stay. The property is an attraction in itself, and you can easily spend a couple of hours exploring it (which we did). The rooms are beautifully fitted, comfortable, and full of character. The staff were all lovely and helpful without exception. We hope to be back one day.

The bathroom is somewhat ‘open’ (the wall doesn’t extend to the ceiling), which took a little getting used to - but we quickly accepted this as part of the charm of staying in such a lovely, old historical building.

Breakfast was delicious. Pillows were perfect and bed comfortable. Shower head was huge and great for sore muscles! Lots of breathing room between rooms and in the hallway. Beautiful grounds. They really are pet friendly!

The signs for check in were confusing in the parking lot. Couple of us were wandering around trying to find where to bring luggage in.

We loved the property--historic architecture and beautiful grounds. There were great views from the cupola.

We booked a cozy room, not knowing it was ground level with no view and the windows looking out onto the air conditioning units. Next time we will pay more and get one of the better rooms. I wish the room had an iron and ironing board or at least clothes hangers. We brought our steamer, but it was difficult to stream our clothes without being able to stream them.

This is a beautiful historic property that has fully updated communication and entertainment equipment in spacious impeccably clean rooms. There are a number of amenities available onsite including a full spa, a pub-style gathering space, a reading room, and limited snacks available for purchase behind the registration desk

As a person with bilateral lower body neuropathy, the two flights of brick stairs to access the check-in desk were quite daunting. There was no signage indicating the three spaces available for those with a disability placard. Those spaces allow access to an elevator from floor one to three (there are 4 levels of guest rooms.) Note the side door needs a room key for after-hours access; due to flight delays, I didn't arrive for check-in until after 9 pm. Hence my concern with the stairs.
