The breakfast buffet had a wide variety of selection and the dining area is pretty. Location was central in District 1. The room was spacious and the hotel felt like it had historic significance.
The reception staff were not very welcoming. The water pressure in the shower was poor and the toiletries were small and low quality. The location was in a fairly commercial area a bit of a distance from good street food vendors. The “garden view” was more of a view of some pot plants and air conditioning units.

Lots of history. The hotel has been there since 1880 and Graham Green mentions the hotel extensively in A Quite American. Great location, friendly and helpful staff and it is very clean.
Hot water takes an age to come through and the WiFi can be a bit patchy.

I wished to relive the ambiance of the Continental I had in my memory, when I first stayed at the oldest hotel of Saigon 33 years ago, while reading again A Quiet American on the spot it had been written. In this respect my expectations were entirely fulfilled. Beside a lovely and attentive staff, we were pleasantly surprised by the renovated facilities, amenities, equipments and sound isolation from the road. While this would probably not match those of neigbouring recent fives stars international chains establishments, they absolutely guaranteed a fives nights comfortable stay in Saigon. You will nowadays not find a room of equivalent size in recent hotels. 3.5 or more meter ceiling, Over 40 sqm room size. Just wonderful. And the location! Right at a historical centre. Just perfect, unless you would insist on river view and would then need to stay at the Majectic or on a rooftop bar and then stay at the REX, with the Continental all three owned and well managed by Saigon Tourist, i.e the (local) government. After all Vietnam is still a communist country... Highly recommended unless you are fan of modernism and adverse to the smell of old fashioned decor and ambiance. Warning: I may be a bit biased because of my attraction to the past and history... ps: Graham Greene's room was the 214....
The only disappointment (and surprise): on New Year's eve, the hotel put huge speakers on their terrace on the street facing the Opera Hall and played very loud pop music, which to me was not in tune with the spirit of the hotel and the nature of its guests. But that was just on one evening.

The rooms are excellent, really atmospheric and some of the staff are exceptional in their helpfulness. A guy from the reception (don't know his name unfortunately) really went extra lengths to help us with finding the right room for us. I forgot some items at the hotel, they kept them for me for 2 weeks safely and returned swiftly and carefully daringly. Thank you again Continental!!
Firstly, t's a central location which in HCMC means VERY noisy by default. The windows are no longer adequate for this challenge, they can't block the noise. The hotel needs to install the second panes as some other historic hotels have done. Secondly, the hotel has lost its elegance that it had reputedly at the time of Graham Greene. The staff are very nice, but the overall system seems to be somehow deficient. The general feeling is that of a Soviet time Intourist hotel, for those who know. There's dirty laundry stacked openly in the corridors, floor personnel chatting it away in the daytime in the open, reception that can't help with anything that doesn't relate to the hotel etc. Once again I'd like to stress: it's not the people, the people are fantastic. It's the management concept.

Location was perfect and it's a great historic building. Room was large, and the air conditioning was very effective. Breakfast in the courtyard was a real treat.
Facilities were a little tired. Balcony was not much use as you couldn't sit outside (but actually I'm still glad we took it). I did ask the hotel about a car from the airport and a dinner reservation when I booked, but they didn't get back to me.

Everything about The Hotel Continental oozed old world charm. The location was amazing and we had the best time there. Cocktails outside under the portico every afternoon watching the world go by was a daily treat and a reminder of the past and tradition.
I can’t offer a criticism because my expectations were set and met. People will have a different experience based on a host of different things. We chose to stay there because of its history and links to notable writers and Journalists. We had room 212. The author Graham Greene had a semi permanent room there (room 214). This is an old Hotel, it’s well maintained and charming. My daughter and I loved it.

This is a fantastic central location and the building is pretty. Rooms are sizable (opera view room 214, notably the corner room use by author Graham Greene) and with high ceilings. Great old world charm and pick it for this reason. The shower over the bath is lacking in pressure but does the job, but that shouldn't be a thing to moan about if you choose this place. For the money, I got a room with a balcony I could sit at all day and watch the world below across the front of the opera house. The breakfast area in the courtyard is nice with trees planted there from the 1800s and there is a good enough selection of foods to suit most tastes I would imagine. Both the Pho and Banh Mi were very nice although I am no expert in such matters. Both Chinese and Japanese offerings were there alongside the obligatory egg station and western breads for toasting.

We booked a room overlooking the Opera House. I messaged if it was possible to stay in the Graham Greene room where he wrote 'The Quiet American'. On booking in, I was delighted and surprised when they said we had been put in there. I had read 'Travels with my Aunt' years ago, so this was special. It was a very comfortable stay. The room was palatial. The pillows and bed were divine. The breakfast was delicious, and Vietnamese dishes, particularly tasty. If you like treating your gut microbiome and want to savour a coffee under spectacular trees and to the sound of birdsong, then this is the place to breakfast. We were also treated to nature's power shower the first morning, which the staff took in their stride. As we were leaving, I was very impressed when their cleaning staff messaged a photo of a silly tiny pink inflatable ring (that came with a bathbomb) that had travelled with me from Malaysia, to check we hadn't forgotten it! It gave the reception staff a laugh anyhow. All in all, it was a wonderful stay with the typically very high standards of Vietnamese hospitality.
This is minor and easy fixed by the Taste Police... They play horrible remixes of what was once good music, outside the main restaurant onto the street, in the evening. We had to ask them to turn it down, which they did because it ruined the ambience of their beautiful restaurant. My digestive system can't cope with music played by chipmunks.

Room was great and the breakfast staff plus presentation was very good. The location of the hotel was very good and within walking distance.
Front deck was asked to book a transfer to the airport for us as we had an early flight but never did. We stood there for some time waiting for something that wasn't booked. A bit poor as they rang me making sure I paid the night before leaving as the front desk isn't manned in the early hours of the morning.

We chose to stay here for the history, the location and the beauty of the building, and we were really happy on all those counts. Most of the staff were very friendly - special thanks to the waiter who quickly rushed to set us out some breakfast despite us arriving after it closed. The hotel still retains its charm, but with a certain severity. It was pretty much exactly as we expected and we were really content with our choice
We tried contacting the hotel via booking.com to ask for early check in, but received no response. Arriving on an early train after an 18 hr journey, we would have appreciated a warmer welcome. Early check in was refused which was understandable but could probably have been communicated with more compassion. We were also unaware the breakfast closed at 9.30 am the next day, and as we were so tired, missed it - and several staff simply carried on clearing up and ignored us when we arrived (luckily one waiter did the opposite and rushed to serve us eggs, bread and fruit). Honestly there was nothing bad about the service but we have received much warmer welcomes at half the price elsewhere.
