Lots of history. The hotel has been there since 1880 and Graham Green mentions the hotel extensively in A Quite American. Great location, friendly and helpful staff and it is very clean.
Hot water takes an age to come through and the WiFi can be a bit patchy.

The rooms are excellent, really atmospheric and some of the staff are exceptional in their helpfulness. A guy from the reception (don't know his name unfortunately) really went extra lengths to help us with finding the right room for us. I forgot some items at the hotel, they kept them for me for 2 weeks safely and returned swiftly and carefully daringly. Thank you again Continental!!
Firstly, t's a central location which in HCMC means VERY noisy by default. The windows are no longer adequate for this challenge, they can't block the noise. The hotel needs to install the second panes as some other historic hotels have done. Secondly, the hotel has lost its elegance that it had reputedly at the time of Graham Greene. The staff are very nice, but the overall system seems to be somehow deficient. The general feeling is that of a Soviet time Intourist hotel, for those who know. There's dirty laundry stacked openly in the corridors, floor personnel chatting it away in the daytime in the open, reception that can't help with anything that doesn't relate to the hotel etc. Once again I'd like to stress: it's not the people, the people are fantastic. It's the management concept.

Location was perfect and it's a great historic building. Room was large, and the air conditioning was very effective. Breakfast in the courtyard was a real treat.
Facilities were a little tired. Balcony was not much use as you couldn't sit outside (but actually I'm still glad we took it). I did ask the hotel about a car from the airport and a dinner reservation when I booked, but they didn't get back to me.

Excellent location, fabulous grand old hotel, loved watching the busy world go by from the outdoor restaurant.
I booked garden view room with bath and balcony. On arrival we were upgraded to city view room with no balcony and no bath! Some upgrade. I wanted what I’d booked but was told those rooms were full. They did move us to a room with bath however. While the restaurant was lovely, the service was very slow. We asked for the bill to sign and were still waiting 20 minutes later so we went to bed. They then phoned us while we were asleep to ask if they could come up to the room and get the bill signed!!!

The overall impression is nice and carries the historical aspect of the building very well. Rooms are big with high ceiling. But for the price it is exceptional value for money.
Bathrooms and air conditioning need freshening up. Breakfast could be improved.

My booking was for Garden view room, but they upgraded my room to the Opera viewing room, so that was great ! Breakfast was full of choices and delicious, there was Banh Mi & other local delights. You could also request for local Vietnamese coffee & they will serve it
The first-day door staff at the main entrance was not very helpful. They were standing around talking when they clearly saw me leaving the hotel with umbrella to my taxi. As a 5-star Heritage hotel, the staff should be well-trained enough to open car door for guests. But the next day (second-day) when it was different personnel, he was very courteous & helped me in the rain.

when i first visited HCM city in 2017,i attracted by continental saigon hotel, love its colonial style design, that time no chance to stay, this year when i visited HCM city again,i had chance to stay here, but only one night, cuz the price a bit higher for me.i stayed at opera view room, this room you can see part of the opera house, another beautiful building in saigon.the room is quite big, with TV, fridge, seating place…the bathroom has a bathtub, but the bathroom not very big. they provide free drinks and toiletries. the hotel still keep its charms.i love its breakfast,in buffet style, many choice, and dining in a nice garden, very memorable experience. staffs just okay, not impressive, but only impressive with their cleaner, very helpful. they also have a restaurant and cafe, but no chance to have meal there, sigh! maybe one day will come again, and will stay longer,to enjoy the ambience here, maybe i will write a story here? just like what Graham Greene did during his stay, haha!

It has been 10 years since I have returned to Vietnam. I used to go often as a child with my parents and we would always stay at the Hotel Continental. So for my honeymoon I decided to come back and it was just wonderful - brought back so many memories but also the hotel is just steeped in French colonial history and charm. The high ceilings in the rooms make the place so spacious and the staff and room service is amazing. We also loved the complimentary breakfast each morning in the beautiful courtyard. This place will always be special to me.

Beautiful old building in a great location
Breakfast needs improving in many respects. 9:30 is very early to finish breakfast for people on holiday. I cannot understand why carton juice is used in a country that has access to fresh fruit. No good quality muesli on offer and the range of fresh fruit/nuts/raisins was limited/nonexistent. This is probably the only hotel I’ve ever stayed in that didn’t have a teapot or you had to pay extra to use one. We have stayed in the Continental 4/5 times and this was the first time we’ve had reason to complain.

The hotel prides itself as being the oldest large hotel in Ho Chi Minh City. It was completed toward the end of the 1800s, so it has high ceilings, thick and solid doors, a wonderful tarpaulin covered central atrium for breakfast - in short, the place exudes charm everywhere you look. The opera house is across the street as is the Hop On Hop Off ticket booth, and many of the recognized tourist sites are within moderate walking distance. The staff was always very courteous and eager to answer any questions I had. I would definitely plan to stay there again when visiting Ho Chi Minh City.
Tiny suggestion would be to have a large pot or container of coffee in lieu of using the slow brewing machine they use for breakfast.
