Holiday Inn Express Melbourne Southbank, an IHG Hotel

The rooms are smallish and minimalist in the express style but provided everything we needed - mainly a good nights sleep. Most importantly, the room was quiet. We thought the beds were firm but comfortable - a matter of personal taste. Breakfast wasn't exactly a Roman Banquet but quite reasonable for an express hotel, and hey - it was free. The usual cereal dispensers provided, with yoghurt and one fruit to accompany. The usual pastries available. The main dish content varied. Saturday morning there was no savoury/vegetable side dish to go with the eggs , sausages and hash browns. Sunday there was bacon and beans, and Monday just beans to accompany. No tomato side serve any day. But, it was free ,and you could eat as much as you wished.

We thought the bed was made up a bit too tightly in the modern photogenic style, the doona didnt come up to cover our shoulders, we had to untuck it from the bottom - no big deal. The soap and skim balm dispenser containers beside the wash basin were identical in appearance so we kept mistaking which was which. Again, a minor issue.

Loved the big common areas on the reception floor. Lots of space to sit, chairs were not too bad comfort wise, PowerPoints in heaps of tables which was handy. A nice little bar that did coffee as well and a little balcony to sit in. Looks like there was some sort of large tv too.. wasn’t being used so not sure if it was for leisure or only business. I just as quite impressed with this floor as it was a nice common area you could spend time in if you needed down time but didn’t want to sit in your room. The room was small but neat. Beds were comfy. Room was nice and warm

The only thing I can fault was the shower had a musty smell to it. Just needed a good bleach or something maybe but really it was minimal and a non issue.

Excellent staff, great location, very clean

We had some Jack hammer type loud reverberating noise that was most likely connected to the aircon or elevator. Please check out the top floor room 2221. We have a recording if you would like to review it. There needs to be a better system for your coffee and tea. The two times we have stayed, one of your machines has broken. We suggest regular Coffee and tea and wait staff to bring to tables when guests arrive. Always running low on glasses for juice, cutlery, and mugs. Maybe time to buy more and have them stored in the decorative lighted areas and cupboards. Regular orange juice would be nice. We applaud you on getting bacon but it could have been cooked a bit more. Keep up the good work, we can see your improvements over time. 😊

Superb modern hotel in the heart of the city, close to Southbank. Parking is easy, reception and restaurant is on the 7th floor. The staff are very welcoming and have a 'can-do' attitude. There is no room service but you can order small meals and then go and collect them when they call you. The room is very comfortable with an excellent bathroom - shower pressure is good too! I requested a quiet room and was given a room at the end of a corridor (superb!). Great wifi, comfy bed, fantastic buffet breakfast included in the price - what great value for money!

The position of the hotel was perfect for us. An easy walk along Southbank, about 30 minutes walk to the MCG and easy walk to the National Gallery of Victoria, Federation square, Ian Potter Centre Gallery, Casino, and Sealife aquarium. I called ahead to find out about parking and it was just around the corner to get in to the relevant park. It was easier than expected. We arrived early and they still let us check in. There was a good selection of breakfast items but was very busy at 9:30am Sunday, so get there earlier. It was quiet, despite being in the city centre. The room was nice and dark, beds comfortable and we slept well.

The shower and toilet had a glass screen( frosted) but you could see outlines through it, which affected privacy if travelling with someone you are not comfortable with.

It was very nice and clean once you got inside , The outside might need abit more love but we enjoyed our stay and are absolutely grateful for the staff and the facilities they had at Holiday inn express It was close to the river and other areas we were going to . Super easy to get assistance from people around that area

Hawaiian pineapple pizza fro 24 hour menu was the worst pizza I ever tasted. Cheese had no taste, the ham wasn’t shredded it was a piece that looked like it was hand torn into 4 or 5 large pieces and it had nominal pineapple. The staff member who took my order when I went to the bar at reception for a few drinks forgot to get it sorted. After an hour wait and I questioned on how long it was taking and asked for my money back because it was 8:50 pm and I wanted to go to bed, another staff member apologised and not only refunded my money arranged for a free pizza. I won’t be ordering a pizza again if I stay another time.

I booked a queen room on a high floor which is exactly what I got. The room is on the small side but ample big enough for a single night’s stay. everything was very clean. They had a special package deal on that only charged $1 for on site parking. Room rate included breakfast. as you would expect there wasn’t a latte selection for breakfast but what was there was very nice. Rooms were quiet with city views. Property is easy to get to and a short walk to Southbank.

There are dinner meals available but there is a limited selection and they are heated in the microwave. The meal itself was delicious (North African Curry) although they needed to be warmed a bit longer in the microwave. Breakfast was not replenished very quickly so we had finished our eggs before the bacon was refreshed. The bathroom walls are patterned frosted glass so not ideal if you are traveling with a friend rather than a partner.

The location is good, the facilities are pleasant and comfortable, the staff is very friendly, the fact that breakfast is included is a plus, but it should be noted that it is not a good quality breakfast, but if you don't want to spend elsewhere, it is a good option .

What I don't like is the lack of privacy in the bathroom, since being made of glass and even though it is frosted, you can see too much against the light and you absolutely listen to what is happening inside. It makes it uncomfortable to use even with your partner, it should be made of another material that allows more privacy. If you go with a family member or friend with whom you don't have much confidence, it's absolutely uncomfortable.

- Staff! Very friendly and efficient. They let is check in very early (like 10am) after a long flight. Of course this would be on availability, but it really saved our day with a jet lag. - If you are travelling for a longer time: you can wash your clothes for 2 dollar per cycle (washer or dryer). They will give you free detergent. - Room is small but like the staff efficient. Even with our 2 backpacks we had space. And it has a really comfortable bed. Slept a lot! - Location is in walking distance to all the main attractions.

- Breakfast is ok. Sometimes there were croissants, sometimes not. For fresh items there is only one bowl with apples and pears. Coffee is good though (like everywhere in Australia). - Would be nice to have soft close on the room doors. Doesn't matter how hard you try to close it quietly, you will wake up your neighbours. - It all depends on the price for the room. This is I think an issue in whole Australia (speaking as an European). Paying more than 120 euro for a room, you expect more (bigger room and better breakfast).
