August 2023

We’ve had a lovely six-day stay in Hotel del Sole in early August, and we were really satisfied with its services. The hotel is situated near the center of Pompei with the Pontifical Basilica, the ancient ruins and all three train stations within comfortable walking distance (in fact, one of the entrances to the ruins is just on the other side of the street!). There is also a supermarket (Carrefour) and pharmacy nearby. Trains and buses go very frequently to Naples and nearby towns, and are cheap (tickets cost about 2-3 euros). Our room was clean, the bed was nice to sleep on and the AC worked fine. The staff was always kind and helpful. We were on half-pension, so we got breakfast and dinner at the hotel. Both of these was excellent: for breakfast, one could choose from salty and sweet pastries, scrambled eggs, jam, fruits etc. The coffee and tea selection were fine as well, although we found the coffee made by the coffee machine to have a somewhat unpleasant taste. This wasn’t a huge problem though, as you could ask the waiters to brew proper coffee free of charge. Dinner was exceptionally tasty and filling, as you get a small appetizer, you can choose between different pastas for a first course, and meat/fish/fruits of the sea-dishes and also pizzas for the second course and desserts as well. As you can choose between around five different first and second courses, the selection isn’t that big, so if you have a longer stay, you won’t have something new to try every day, but that’s not really an issue, as the dishes are very good, so you’ll surely find something that you will gladly eat again. The restaurant staff was always professional and welcoming.

The only problem during our stay was that the Wi-Fi didn’t function in our room (it did work in the lounge and in the restaurant, but not in the room which was on the 4th floor). Our devices saw the network, but they couldn’t connect to it even though we entered the right password. We asked the staff at the reception two times about this issue and they said they would restart the modem, but that didn’t fix the problem. Obviously, we didn’t come to Italy to look at our phones all day, so it didn’t bother us that much (that’s why we didn’t push it any further with the staff), but it was still not ideal, as Wi-Fi is a pretty basic service that should function everywhere in a 4-star hotel.

Excellent location across the road from the Pompeii ruins. There are multiple restaurants and bars nearby and the Pompei train stations are all in walking distance (10-20 mins, depending on which one you use). Using the train, we travelled to Sorrento, Herculaneum and Naples. The breakfast room has a wonderful view of the ruins with Vesuvius as a backdrop - an uplifting way to start the day. Breakfast was good with lots of choice. Our room was comfortable, had a decent shower, TV with Netflix and the window blinds enabled a good sleep. The reception staff were friendly and helpful and the bar & restaurant had a lovely atmosphere. We would happily stay here again.

Nothing - it was great.

Excellent hotel in a superb position. Can't get much better or closer for the Pompeii ruins, and indeed you overlook them as you eat your breakfast! Helpful staff, and a great bar and restaurant on the ground floor. Lovely to have a decent sized fridge in the room, and the Superior Suite was HUGE! The very efficient air con was very much appreciated too. Breakfast choices have improved greatly since I was there in July 2016. I'll definitely be back to this hotel if I return.

Great to have tea/coffee making facilities in the room, but just a word of warning that they don't place any teabags or coffee sachets - or milk - in the rooms with the kettle. There was sugar but nothing else - and the same applied to friends in other rooms.

The location of the hotel is perfect for exploring Pompei. It is located very close to one of the entrances and there are many restaurants and shops nearby. Our room was cosy with very comfortable bed and nice bathroom.

Our room was a bit small for the two of us, and it felt like there are some shelfs or cabinets missing in the bathroom. There were not many breakfast options, so we basically ate the same thing over and over during our stay. Even though the staff is very kind, they had some trouble with english, so sometimes it was difficult to get the information we needed. Taken together, I would say that this hotel is perfect for a short stay (2-3 days), and for those who wish to spend time exploring Pompei.

This is a fantastically situated hotel, extremely close to the Amphitheatre entrance to the Pompeii ruins. We arrived on the first Sunday of the month and were surprised to find that access to the site was free on these days! The hotel has a free car park, accessible through an automated gate on the side street, outside in a sort of courtyard with plenty of space. There is an attached bar and restaurant, although plenty of other places to eat in Pompei, which is a lovely lively town. The room was well sized (we had a family room which had two separate double rooms) although felt a little dated.

The road noise during the night, especially on a Sunday night was quite bad causing an interrupted nights sleep. The air conditioning was a bit hit and miss, worked well at times but not at others...

Room was so clean. Nice balcony (table and chairs would be a bonus), decent shower, comfy bed, good air conditioning, lovely gardens and nice staff. Breakfast was excellent. Choice of hot food such as eggs and bacon or baked goods and pasties. Coffee machine with an excellent selection. Lots of fruit available and they didn't seem to mind you taking some for later. Location was perfect. Walking distance to the ruins, to the square (check out the church) and a whole bunch of trips. Would recommend this hotel. Good value.

Our room was next to a bar and they partied quite late. Centre of Pompeii though so expected and the singer was quite good!

The hotel is located perfectly for accessing the Pompeii ruins. If you can, get a ticket that allows access from the entrance opposite (near the amphitheatre). If not, you can always exit the ruins there. The hotel itself has a modest feel about it when you enter and our expectation was that the room would be "okay". In fact, the room was amazing - very spacious and really comfortable. Also, the staff were super friendly and helpful.

The reception area is small the lifts are quite small. The choice of restaurants immediately next to the hotel is not great, but an eight minute walk into town soon fixes that.

the hotel is very pretty and there was enough room. the beds are very hard so if you have problems with your back, this may not be good for you. there is a restaurant attached that has excellent food if you don’t feel like going out. you can literally walk across the street and about a block up and reach the ticket entrance to Pompeii. there is also breakfast upstairs with a wonderful view. I will say that I felt like the staff sometimes weren’t very helpful because I didn’t speak Italian. a few staff members were very nice, but the rest acted like they couldn’t be bothered.

instructions for where to park need to be better communicated. I drove around for twenty minutes looking for parking and found a space. went inside to check in and was told that there is a gate on the same street where I parked. not everyone who visits can read the signs that are posted.

Location for visting the Pompei ruins is 2nd to none. There is an entrance to the ruins right across the street. Hotel was clean and the bathroom was quite large. Also we got a family room which was 2 bedrooms (sleeps 6) and we were only expecting 1 bedroom for our party of 3. Also the rooms had a balcony overlooking the ruins. The 4th floor had a more than ample breakfast which was included with our room. Lastly, the air conditioning was very good. Also there is a great "mostly locals" restaurant in the next block called "I Matti". Food and drink was excellent. They had English menus and wait staff could speak English. We were there about 9:30 PM on a Tuesday and the vibe was busy and lots of action with waiters running around attending to a full place.

Rooms were very dated. Don't expect a 5 star place. I'd give the hotel 3 stars. In all not bad for what we were wanting for a one night stay to see the ruins before heading to Amalfi Coast.

The level 4 breakfast room is a real treat as it looks out over the archeological site and is spacious. Breakfast included a good selection of dishes - self serve. Reception staff solved our air con problem quick fast, booked a taxi, helped with printing tickets, all done efficiently and pleasantly. Very good value for the price.
