Grand Hotel

The corner upstairs room is big and light, pretty recently renovated. Clean and tidy. Very reasonably priced for the location and space! I was there mid week, even still it was very quiet overnight (was initially worried there would be noise from the pub). Very easy place to stay: street parking nearby is free overnight, the bistro does good pub food and... there's beers just downstairs! I was travelling for work, but would be great if you wanted to stay and visit the beach / spend the weekend too. Staff are friendly and helpful.

The wifi instructions in the room don't work - just ask at the bar though.

Loved the location, friendly staff and the large balcony. The showers were amazing. Restaurant was great for pub food.

Room 8 I think the bed was only a double size. A queen would have made it a better stay. I'm not sure why the tv was mounted so low, which made it hard to watch in bed. It could be that there were no studs in the wall. The shelf in the bathroom was broken, so there was nowhere to put your toiletry items. The blinds need replacing as they don't close properly. A better solution would be block out curtains as there's no sleeping in as the light coming in is so bright.

This is pub accommodation in an old pub. It would suit backpackers well, rather than those looking for luxury comfort. The pub was well-run, quiet, with good food available all day and jazz and blues some nights. Lucas, the publican, was extremely friendly and even gave us a lift to pick up our hire car. Nice location, convenient to the beach and downtown (even though downtown Newcastle has seen better days.)

The room was small and a bit stuffy. Be aware that you have to lug your luggage up flights of stairs. The hotel is near the top of a fairly steep hill, and buses and taxis can be scarce, but if you're fit, you should be okay.

The Grand is a fabulous old pub that has been done up but has faded a bit again since then. Still in a great location. Bar and Bistro good. Staff pleasant and helpful. We stayed in room 7 which has a fantastic corner piece of the first floor verandah. This is a big room with a king sized bed. Plenty of hot water. On street parking close to the pub is free overnight from 5pm until 9am. plenty of cafes and restaurants close by but mist closed Sunday and Monday nights do luckily the hotel Bistro was open and the food good.

The shower in the bath is always a bit risky. The parking garage across the street from the hotel is convenient but expensive. We paid $60 for less than 24hrs. The furniture in the room was starting to look worn and tired and was an odd collection. A big room with plenty of space but only one chair for the table.

I received an awesome greeting from a sprightly lady at the hotel, who greeted me by name, recalling all my requests. I felt very welcome, after a long journey to Newcastle. I loved the history of the hotel, its interior with a beautiful (spiral?) staircase to the accomodation. The room was Incredibly spacious (!), and the bathroom stylishly designed - the tiling on the bathroom floor was beautiful and felt lovely to walk along. The hotel is set in an excellent location, minutes away from the beach, and not that much further to the light rail.

Love staying at The Grand. Beautiful, charming old pub in the heart of the CBD, and 2 minute walk to the beach. Great staff, clean rooms with good facilities.

Great location, close to public transport and the beach. Great ambience. Comfy beds and excellent food - what more can one ask for ??

Stairs up to the 2nd level could have been a problem - it was a matter of luck that we knew about them before hand - so were prepared - but they would be a problem for anyone with mobility probs. Would be good to get advice of this when a booking is made.

Location was perfect. Lunch was also great. 2 steaks. Both cooked perfect. The underground was exceptional. Beautiful whiskey bar. Staff were brilliant..atmosphere outstanding.

Sound like I'm complaining but im not as you get what you pay for. Room 1..... very cheap.... and deserves a cheap price.... if you want a room to only sleep but get a great feed and head to the whiskey bar underneath then book it... if you want views and fancy in room 1 then it's a no. Friends were in room 7.... was fantastic!!!! So if you want a cheap room in a great location with great food and an absolutely fantastic whiskey bar book it!!!

Great location short walk to the beach. Huge balcony. Decent shower. Friendly welcome from staff. Really good pub underneath (excellent scotch eggs!) and the underground bar was cool too. This was our third trip to Newcastle and this was our favourite accommodation so far!

Very small room (no 9). Wouldn’t have wanted to stay in it longer than our 2 nights. Could do with a hand towel in the bathroom. The overhead light kept switching itself on and off at random times.

Friendly staff, good location, clean rooms with modern bathrooms - great shower pressure & water temperature. Convenient having bar & bistro downstairs, pub style meals with good prices - loved the pork belly. Quiet location & could not hear other guests from the rooms.

Beds a bit soft for my taste & pillows were really big so hard to get comfy. Room on 2nd floor and no lifts which for older people could be an issue.
