Facilities are one of the cleanest that I've been to for a backpacker hostel. I was quite impressed. Free surfboards, body boards, a skateboard, citibikes and scooters to use. Free wildlife park access. Staff are lovely. Great price. Close to beach. Luggage storage during the day. Bean bags, lounges and comfy places to hang out with board games, events each night and laundry. Kitchen set up and dining is great with everything you need plus heaps of space. It wasnt too hot, the fans and open windows were used effectively that no AC was needed. Close to light rail for easy travel to Newcastle interchange.

Great atmosphere. Great staff. Gorgeous building. Great location. Comfortable and clean. Paper towels in the bathrooms.

Bathroom maintenance required. 1) Need more drains, a lot of water on the floors and one area the carpet outside the door was wet. 2)Toilet paper holders wouldn't stay shut, they were taped up but that didn't hold. 3) Only one soap disposal unit in the bathroom. 4) Many taps need replacing as they could not be turned off properly, one was dribbling hot water. Very thin toilet paper which ripped very easily while trying to get it off the roll, causing wastage. False economy.

Location = perfect! Beach is down the road, right in the centre of the city and only a 5 minute walk to the ferry to Stockton. The hostel was clean and had events on at night to connect travellers :) The kitchen had all the facilities you'd need if wanting to cook, there were plenty of recommendations on what to do in Newcastle, free bike and surfboard hire, huge lockers in the rooms and great showers. There was also a locked baggage room to keep your stuff if you arrived earlier than check-in.

The beds weren't the comfiest and there weren't any power points near the beds themselves - they were on the floor or in the lockers. The fan in our room was covered in dust, but we just kept the windows open and that was enough.

Overall I had a really nice stay. The hostel was more low-key than some and had a couple of events on during the week to meet other travellers. The staff were really friendly and helpful. My dorm was spotless. The kitchen was really big, had multiple burners and lots of utensils/plates/mugs etc. It was also cleaned twice daily so there was never too much mess. Can easily get a tram straight from Newcastle Interchange to Newcastle Beach and there is a super nice restaurant called Scottie's nearby that does awesome seafood. Would definitely stay again. The showers were clean and pleasant but they could do with an upgrade. The luggage room is very small and gets extremely crowded after checkout.

Amazing location, so close to beaches and ocean baths. Social events on at night time (eg wine and cheese night) was a good way to meet people. Bathrooms were clean and beds comfy. Large kitchen area.

Shame reception is closed between 1-3pm which is prime check in time, even though I had called up just before 1 to ask if room would be ready soon as I was due in early, and she said it would be, but didn’t think to mention I won’t be able to check in. Had to sit around and wait 1.5 hours when I got there.

This YHA is perfectly located, close to the centre of Newcastle and the shortest of walks to Newcastle Beach and CBD area and and also within walking distance to other central beaches such as Nobbies Beach and Bar Beach and the Wharf area. It has a relaxed, welcoming vibe in a character filled building. The common area has a multitude of space with loads chesterfield chairs/ sofas, wood panelling, big fireplace, billiards, table tennis table, free bikes, free use of surfboards and boogie boards, well equipped kitchen. Bed was very comfortable. We had a great time. The beaches are lovely in Newcastle, the sand soft and the water warmer than Victoria! My family and I had a great time. The staff at the hostel were welcoming and relaxed but helpful; we were able to come and go even on our day of departure as we were leaving Newcastle in the early evening.

Everything. Lots of communal seating indoors and outside. Kitchen was big with all the pots/pans/utensils you will need. Fridge/freezers to store your food, a lot of tables for all to eat at. Dorm was comfy with lockers inside room. Showers/toilets upstairs separated for men and women, enough in the men’s. Good location near to the beach. Newcastle was quieter than most places but nice for a change after Sydney. The staff were very helpful and always happy to help. Free hire of bikes to use.

The location was amazing - so close to the beach and fabulous food places (recommend Moor just around the corner). The room was basic but had a window and it was possible to open it without losing privacy. There was a fan and TV, which was a bit of a bonus. The hostel has excellent resources to help travellers make the most of their trip such as surfboards, bikes, and lots of information boards, wine and cheese nights (not even from a cask!) etc. Staff are super friendly and the historical building is really beautiful.

The furniture was in 'inconsistent' condition with some of the chesterfield chairs in the large living room having missing cushions and things. There were some cockroaches in the room and the towels provided were pretty threadbare. I would suggest bringing your own towels for sure and zipping up your bags to avoid roaches. Pests are hard to avoid in a space with many people and although the rules are no food in rooms, it is impossible to police and for a budget stay in an incredible location that has a fun vibe, it is not unexpected and a small price to pay.

Hostel is in a beautiful old heritage house. It has lots of sofas, outdoor sitting spaces and a big kitchen with lots of tables. Staff are friendly and patient. A big bonus is the hostel loans surfboards and bicycles free of charge. The beach is a few minutes walk from the hostel. The town also has an ALDI supermarket. Those are always great for helping keep within a budget. I wish I had time to go back there again on this trip.

Great location within in 5 minutes walking 🚶 distance to the beautiful beach💗The staff at the desk are friendly & so helpful,nothin is to much trouble.They also have Activity nights on at the YHA.Monday is Wine & Cheese,wed Trivia & Thurs is BBQ.(Free) also they supply everything. I've stayed there twice now & would Highly Recommend the YHA to friends & family😊👌
