Staying here was an absolute delight! It was such a cool experience to stay in a Japanese ryokan and we are glad we chose this place. The owners are really lovely, the rooms are really cosy and warm and sleeping on futons was so snug! Definitely helped in feeling more connected to the culture. The indoor garden was super cool, and the shared bathrooms didn’t bother us. We had the Japanese breakfast which was delicious, and we were able to give our luggage before check in and leave after check out. Will definitely recommend for anyone who is looking for a Japanese inn experience that is in a really convenient location!

Naturally staying in an inn you have to be quieter at night, and staying upstairs the stairs could be difficult to climb for some people as they are quite steep. Neither of these bothered us though - just things to consider for others!

The owner was amazing. Very friendly and helpful. Facilities were clean. Rooms were very big. Beds were super comfortable. Slept like logs. The welcome tea a genmaicha was delicious and we had a kettle of hot water ready for us. Each of us had traditional bathrobes and slippers. The beds are futons on the floor and I was a little worried after reading other reviews but we slept like logs without waking up still. Great aircon kept the room cool. We had a family room that was two rooms with the dividing wall open. Plenty of space and could close the doors to sleep. Walls are paper thin (actual) but everyone was quiet after 9pm and it was very peaceful and respectful. Beautiful experience in a traditional ryokan. We didn't book breakfast but it smelt delicious and there is a great little bakery downstairs where we bought takeaway treats for our day trips. Our last day was bucketing rain and we were offered umbrellas for our morning walk, then offered them to keep when we were leaving for the station. The little zen garden in the middle of the building was lovely. Great location, close to Nishiki Market and train stations.

Nothing. It was perfect, but be warned the bathroom is shared if you aren't into that sort of thing - you may have to wait your turn for a morning shower.

The location was very convenient as it is close to kawaramachi station, bus stops, restaurants, and shops. The owner was very friendly and accommodating. The room was beautiful. It felt like stepping into traditional, feudal Japan for a night. The bed was comfortable, and the room was warm despite us visiting on a very cold night. The communal bathrooms and shower were clean. We were lucky that there was only one other couple there during our stay, so there were no issues accessing the bathroom facilities. The breakfast served in our room was delicious.

The room was a bit dusty. The decor is a little bit old and worn.

What a wonderful experience! Location was excellent. Clean. Cute open aired, shared bathroom with a little Japanese garden (cold at night be aware). We would come out and a beautiful bakery right next door we would get a stunning morning pastry and good coffee. Nice touches in our room with yummy green tea and traditional biscuits. Owner was great. Loved taking off our shoes and putting slippers on at the door for a real Japanese experience. This is something I’ve never done before staying in a place like this and it was so interesting. Read up about ryokans before you book as might not be for everyone especially if you are a bit infirm, no chairs etc, sit on ground around a traditional table. Beds are not comfy so just expect this as a traditional experience. We were a bit loud and kept forgetting that the walls were literally paper thin and you could hear everything so being a family of four we had to keep reminding each other to be quiet. A really great experience and recommend to experience it once. I couldn’t have done more than two nights though.

I couldn’t sleep as the pillow and mattress was so uncomfortable. Pillow like a small beaded sack. It’s traditional and all part of the experience so if you want this experience you will have to deal with it. I couldn’t sleep and my back was killing me. Happy to put up with it as an amazing experience but I couldn’t do it again, I was exhausted after 2 nights. Fun though!

Such a wonderfully cosy inn in the heart of Kyoto. The owner greeted me and spoke very good English. We had both a living tatami room with table and chairs and a sleeping tatami room with futons. The communal garden was so calm and peaceful and luckily for us just outside our room as we were on the ground floor. It was so quiet inside the inn even though it's right in the heart of the city, a welcome refuge and a great location as well for sightseeing.

The futon was a bit thin.

I stayed for two nights. Breakfast was not included. The hotel was in a central location within walking distance of both public transportation, restaurants, and cultural opportunities. The staff is lovely. The room was clean. The tea on offer in my room upon arrival was much appreciated. The host tidied up and provided clean towels while I was out during the day. It was quiet and restful. I definitely recommend.

Not a big drawback, but the room is a bit dark. Perhaps an option for brighter, direct light for writing, etc.

Loved the big room - with a divider to separate from common area. The whole vibe of the place is spectacular - traditional Japanese. Owner is friendly and very polite - common bathroom and bathing space downstairs is well appointed and comfortable. Location is hugely convenient - beautiful neighborhood, lots to eat, off the main street so feels quiet and peaceful but very quick to get to transport and tourist locations. The neighborhood is great to walk around and there is a laundrymat close by.

I liked everything about the property, it was comfortable, humble, quiet, and warm. I love traditional Japanese homes and ryokans, and this property was the perfect combination of the two. It’s run by a family who provide excellent service and provide a warm environment for guests. The property itself is beautiful with an open air garden and traditional interior. I was concerned about there being only one shower, but there was never a line up and it was always available when I wanted to use it. The Japanese breakfast that i was served was some of the best food I’ve ever had and I’ll always remember it.

I didn’t get to stay there longer.

The staff was very helpful and always kept the room neat and tidy. He was always willing to help out and organised our luggage transfer with ease. The room has a great feel to it and makes you feel really immersed in Japanese life. It is close enough to the main attractions of Kyoto and there are so many eateries along the street a stone throw away. Would recommend!

It’s not to say I didn’t like it but if you are someone who would prefer their own ensuite this wouldn’t be the place for you as it remains shared facilities on the ground level of the inn.
