I loved loved LOVED this place. I wanted to stay at a ryokan, but was turned off by the high prices at some. All I wanted was a room with a futon on tatami mats, in a historically-centered part of town, for my 3 days in Tokyo before joining with Japanese colleagues on forestry field work. I like the austerity and simplicity of many aspects of the traditional Japanese lifestyle. I got what I wanted with Ryokan Mikawaya, and much more. The proprietor knows a LOT about Japan, not just Tokyo, including an impressive knowledge of the variety of Japanese foods, and where to get the best of it in Tokyo, and for not a lot of $$. Should I ever be fortunate enough to travel to this brilliantly organized and fascinating country, I would stay again at Mikawaya.

That I had only three days in Tokyo!

An authentic Japanese ryokan experience, including a fridge, aircon (a savior during hot summer days and nights), hair dryer, tea facilities, toiletries, slippers, robes, and wi-fi. Laundry facilities are available for an extra fee. Very clean and pleasant. Towels are changed every day. Room, bathroom and a lift are "Japanese size", as the owner responded to my daughter's surprise about how small everything is. I've stayed in smaller hotels that were more expensive and worse positioned, and this ryokan is fantastic value for money. Location is unbeatable - everything a tourist needs is within 100 meters, including a train station. Staff's hospitality was simply outstanding. Thank you!

The premises are somewhat dated and the beds were not rolled up during the day, as I experienced in other ryokans, but it suited us well for this trip.

Located right off the nakamise leading up to Sensoji, this was a beautiful ryokan. They keep the door locked to keep wandering tourists out, which is good. Staff were friendly, always welcoming me back and saying goodbye when I left. The lady who runs the place also speaks good English. Check-in was at 3pm, but she said I could get in 2 hours earlier (I did not take up this off as I went off exploring). The room was just as the pictures promised with tatami floor and a futon. Everything needed was in the room. I found the futon more comfortable than the standard business hotel beds I'd been sleeping in.

I loved the place, but the bathroom did not have a bidet (not a problem for me, but if you want a bidet, you may be disappointed).

The location was perfect, right in the middle of Asakusa, a really nice cozy neighbourhood. Sensoji temple is only five minutes away. It was a nice traditional experience to sleep on the futon beds and tatami mats. Way more comfortable than an average hotel bed! Everyday you get fresh towels and a new sleeping kimono. During the day you can fold up the mats and have a little table in the middle. This saves a lot of space and its helpful with the suitcases. Space is rare in Tokyo!

Location was fabulous and so close to everything. The owners are so sweet and attentive, and gave some restaurant recommendations for me as well It is a simple place— please Google what a ryokan is before booking. It will be small and it will be simple. You will sleep on a futon mat on the floor. The building is older but there is a lift so no worries about heavy luggage.

As it is so close to the market and the temple, it does get a bit loud. I am a sound sleeper and I did wake up. Bring earplugs if you need them.

This Ryokan it's located just by the side of the Asakusa Temple, which is amazing to walk by at night. It's also incredibly well-located for anything you may need. I stayed at one of the cheaper Japanese rooms since I knew I was going to be out in Tokyo more than in the room, and it paid out. Sleeping in a traditional bed over tatami everything after a Tokyo outing was the best. I would definitely come back here next time. The staff was very friendly too, eager to speak and give recommendations.

This was the last place I stayed during my trip, and I got used to taking amazing baths in every other accommodation. However, the room I had didn't have the best bath. Which is expected for the room I got, but I missed it. More a nitpick than anything.

Centrally located in the heart of historic Asakusa, right off Nakamise-dori street. Nakamise get's busy during the days, so staying in the area overnight opens up exploring the beauty of Sensoji temple after dark without the crowed. The Host greeted us at the door everytime we came in or out, and offered amazing food recommendations all within a few minutes walk. I was a bit worried as a westerner about sleeping on tatami mats, but found that I had some of the best night sleeps of my life. Incredibly comfortable, the Aircon works great during the summer. The room isn't the largest, but perfect for a place to relax and sleep.

I wish the genkan was larger to house luggage as rolling them on the tatami mats felt wrong. However, this is in no way a negative of my stay.

This felt like a straightforward, Japanese-style hotel which is what we was looking for. It was adjacent to the famous Asakusa Shrine and a few feet from all the busy food and shopping stalls leading up to it. Although it was busy, the ryokan is on a side street that has less foot traffic and no car traffic. There are lots of restaurants and shops close by and it was walking distance to the Asakusa Subway station. The manager of the ryokan was helpful and spoke English.

I'm nitpicking here but I noticed inside the room, there was some dust collecting at the corners of the walls and ceiling. Otherwise, the room and ryokan was clean. The location, although central to lots of things to see, was a more touristy than we wanted. In hindsight, I would have chosen a ryokan in a residential neighborhood. However if it's your first time in Tokyo, it's a GREAT place to see lots of things close by.

The location is superb. 5 min walk from sensojii temple, 30 seconds from the nakamise-dori street market. Staff were extremely helpful and funny. A great value 2* hotel!

This type of hotel is not for those who want the "full", large scale traditional Japanese hotel. This is on a small scale. This is not a criticism just to notify those who want the convenience of a larger scale hotel mixed with the traditional ryoken setting.

Location, friendly staff, welcoming treatment every day, family guest house, quiet pedestrian lane, close to many stores, restaurants, souvenir shops, important temple. View from window was very nice, overlooking the sky tree and row of small stores leading to the temple.

Room was quite small for western standards, but very comfortable and in traditional Japanese style.
