I recommend Hotel Sombra del Agua with enthusiasm! Excellent location - right in the center of town. Yet the floor plans, massive architecture and good building materials insulate it from the city's noise. It is a heavenly oasis. Impeccable, attentive service, to the most minute details by a staff who is both highly professional and compassionate. Luxurious comfort for affordable prices. The hotel is super clean and very well maintained. The hotel's restaurant's chef is one Mexico's top 100 chefs and his food is both traditional and creative.

I wish more of the hotel staff would speak English -- it is unfortunate that English has become the dominant language of international communication. Likewise, the hot water pressure will gain from improvement.

The decor, the staff was friendly. Location perfect. Water in the room every day. The cleaning lady was so friendly. The young man by the door was very nice too. All staff was friendly. Beds very comfy

There isn't a children menu at the hotel restaurant. So it was difficult to eat there with my toddler. Whenever I asked for a normal breakfast for her (adult size) it had a lot of condiments. There should have a simple menu for children will make meals times more convenient.

I did a lot of research before booking Sombra del Agua. TripAdvisor should remove the older reviews from when this property was managed by Holiday Inn. The current operators have created an intimate hotel, perfectly located, with exceptional service and accommodations (read to the end to learn about the on-site restaurant). From check in, to check out we were treated like royalty! The staff was attentive, and helpful. I lost an earring in the room, my husband told the front desk and voila! the maid found it and returned it. The rooms are decorated in an elegant simple colonial style. A bit dark, but that was the style of the day. The bed was incredible, (sadly better than the one we have at home) soaps and lotions of exceptional quality. I did read some reviews commenting on the noise level. If you want silence, when traveling in a busy city and also want to enjoy a historic property, bring earplugs. Personally, I am a really lite sleeper and yes, voices did carry in the night and echo in the halls. We had a courtyard facing room, so I'm not sure what the street facing rooms are like, but it really didn't bother me and I accepted it as part of the experience. The courtyards and gardens are beautifully maintained and the perfect place to enjoy a good book and glass of wine or margarita... Let's talk about the restaurant... We are foodies. We travel to eat and learn about cultures through food. We at many restaurants while in San Cristobol and by far Tarumba was the best of them all. We enjoyed a dinner and two breakfasts there. The menu is regionally inspired and the food beyond expectation. Chef Jorge Gordillo and staff, we applaud you! Daniel and team, we are so grateful for your service and making our stay a memorable one! We hope to return again one day!

It would have been great to have a hook or two in the bathroom!

The breakfast was delicious, plenty of options and presented exceptionally. Very obvious that the chef takes huge pride in their work, quality of the food was second to none. My Dad and Brother are chefs so I’m quite fussy and understand the level of work that goes into to develop, deliver and present such beautiful dishes. The staff are always friendly and go out of their way to help you. The actual decor in the hotel is beautiful. We attended a food and wine event and it was phenomenal, we have fantastic memories from our time here.

Nothing.

The common areas of this hotel are splendid: the courtyards are beautifully designed, as is the restaurant. There was a private parking area two blocks away from the hotel. They have a very good and fast laundry service (per bag - overnight washed and ironed and affordable!). The restaurant is excellent, both for dinner as for breakfast and the staff is very friendly.

The ventilation of the room was a bit complicated: our room had one window on the side of the corridor, which we had to open at night for fresh air (the air-conditioning wasn't getting air from outside) so we were disturbed by the sounds from the hotel.

The patio is great and relaxing - I was told the wooden beams are still the originals from the early XX century. The rooms were large and nicely decorated. The bathroom was luxurious, with large towels and good toiletries (shampoo, body wash and the like). Very clean and in a very good location downtown.

The rooms we had were a bit dark and the beds are a bit short if you happen to be tall. We had breakfast at the restaurant once but were disappointed (perhaps high expectations because it is run by a cheff).

Gorgeous! My room was well-appointed, clean, and very spacious (I had a front seating area). The staff was very welcoming and eager to help. I will 100% stay here again when I come back to Chiapas :)

My only complaint would be that my room faced the courtyard which also happened to be the dining room of the on-site restaurant, and so could be very noisy at night. Thank goodness I had a noise machine!

Feels like a super-luxury hotel - designed very well and super Impressive. The staff was nice and the shower was clean and beautiful. I really like that they gave us free water bottles, and placed the power sockets in good locations. The restaurants\coffee place of the hotel looks so good too.

VERY MINOR NOTES 😄: The TV or the internet that was connected to the TV was quite slow. I'm glad they had a smart TV but eventually, it wasn't working good as I expected. The window at the shower\toilet was just right to the street so I had to close\cover the blinds every time. It would much nicer if they had a kind of ventilation in order to prevent the bad smalls without exposing the entire bathroom to the street.

Love the hotel really nice and very cozy. Had one of the best restaurants in San Cristobal

I couldn’t sleep really well. Next to the first room was a construction so they’ve change us, and on the second room was next to the street so on the night you could hear all the cars passing by - so annoying.

I just LOVED this hotel. Super stylish, great location, beautiful courtyard, tasty restaurant, lovely wooden furniture in the rooms. I will definitely stay here the next time I am in San Cristobal!

I booked a room online and we arrived past midnight the first night and ended up in a rather airless room with a pump/bomba in the airshaft that shook and rattled the room every hour or so. The next morning we asked if we could change rooms and they said YES and put us in a beautiful room with a window to the street - ahh AIR! :) We LOVED it. Wonderuful.
