There was nothing not to like. If you are looking for a quiet, secluded get away in a rainforest away from the city, then this is exactly what you are looking for. The owner is very kind, and every aspect of our stay was absolutely phenomenal. I will stay here again and recommend it to all my friends and family!

There is nothing I would change about my stay at the Lava Tree Tropic Inn.

We love the Lava Tree inn and we love the hostess, Irene! our room was lovely, as well as the property with its lush plantings, macadamia trees, orchids and flowering trees. It's right next to Lava Tree state park, and close to black sand beaches and mineral springs. Irene is a character, born in Hungary, widely travelled and happily settled in Puna after years in LA; the tropical fruit breakfasts with homemade breads were great, as was Irene's company. We were treated to guinea fowl, chickens and Irene's 21 year old cat Boomerang. I can't say enough and recommend the Inn highly!

nothing!

You could call the setting "rustic," but that wouldn't be quite right. In reality, we had all the amenities I could have asked for down to hot water and Wi-Fi. It's rural, tropical, and best accessed with a car with more than a sedan's level of clearance. The place is lived-in, smelling of old hardwood. The faucets don't shine with a hotel's luster, but the towels are clean and the bedroom floors are kept cleaner than in my own house. Irene was sweet and willing to expound upon anything to which we took an interest—the cats, the birds, the fruit, her hobbies. She also had what seemed to be a knack for hosting with discretion. If it was late and we came back and said hi to her in the kitchen, she greeted us warmly but gracefully ended the chitchat when it was time to go our separate ways for the night. She's living her dream in that old house in Pahoa, and is thrilled to share it with the multitudes of characters who find her from all over. For what I was looking for, this bed and breakfast was the whole package, and I'd gladly stay there again—only next time, I'd bring my saxophone so I can jam with Irene's friends on a fine Friday afternoon.

The grounds are beautiful, wish we had more time to wander around. There are lots of space to relax and enjoy the flowers that surround the Inn. The rooms were very comfortable with private baths. Irene, the Inn Keeper was extremely accommodating. She worked hard to make our stay memorable. If we needed something, she’d quickly get it. The breakfast was always delicious with local fruits.

With the heavy rains, the pleasant drive on to the property got bumpy. No fault of the Inn Keeper.

Our stay at the Tropic Inn was absolutely phenomenal. If you are looking for a quiet, secluded place in the rainforest away from the city, this is the perfect choice. Irene, the owner, is a fantastic host, making every aspect of our stay memorable. The room was spacious and clean, the beds comfortable. Irene's local tips were invaluable when exploring the island. The breakfast, made with fresh fruit from her tropical garden, Kona coffee, homemade jams and local produce, was a great start to each day. The location is ideal, near the last lava flow and convenient for exploring Volcano and Hilo National Park. The inn offers an authentic Hawaiian Big Island experience, surrounded by lush vegetation, giving it a Jurassic Park feel. Irene's passion for running this guesthouse is evident, making it a wonderful experience for her guests. The proximity to the 2018 lava flows adds a unique touch to the experience. The accommodations are not only affordable, but also provide a real opportunity to unplug and soak up nature. We stayed for 6 days, exploring the island by car, and would not consider staying anywhere else on the Big Island. I highly recommend it!

The area is amazing! This is a bed and breakfast but honestly it’s more like going to stay at an old friend’s place. If you want charming, and want to be right in the middle of the sounds of a rainforest- I went to sleep each night with the windows open to hear first hand what I would listen to on a app for sleeping. Beds are comfortable and I’m super picky! There is a little town nearby and Hilo is only like 30 mins away. We spent the short time we had here just driving around the island and taking photos. This was our first time on the big island and I can’t wait to come back!

We had a wonderful stay with Irene at the Lava Tree Inn and would highly recommend it to anyone. The property is beautiful and privately secluded in the forest. Additionally, Irene is a wonderful host. She is warm, friendly, and tells captivating stories. She even provides breakfast using fruits she grows in her own yard! Again, we truly enjoyed our stay with Irene and would recommend it to everyone

Probably the most tranquil spot on the island. If you are in search of some real "R and R" look nowhere else. Kind and welcoming, Irene, the owner, is the perfect host. The property is surrounded by a luscious garden. Pahoa is just a short drive away, has some good eating options, and an enormous Longs pharmacy/retail store.

We have arrived very late, around 23h00. It is true that the place may look weird and very very backcountry when you get there at night but Irene was waiting for us and we where very welcome what a great place in the middle of the jungle🫣. You must take time to talk with Irene about what you want to visit, She will be helpfull.

First night we tough we would not be able to sleep because of the noise at night from the frog and birds (we think it was frogs)🤣. But we did get use to very quickly and they stop around midnight. And at the end, we found that funny

A good bed & shower are, as always, the default necessities for a good stay. The owner was very helpful and the breakfast she served, with plenty of local fruits, delicious. She lend me a beach towel because I didn’t bring one myself. The accommodation is very secluded, in a very quiet corner of the island. The rare Hawaiian Hawk in the garden made for a nice surprise.

The entrance road is about 800m/0.5 mile and unsurfaced and passes two gates that need to be opened and closed each time one passes. To us it was fine but I can imagine that people driving an ordinary saloon car might have a little difficulty negotiating the entrance road. The private bathroom was not en-suite but across the little hallway.
