Ok so I read the reviews and it sounded like a bit of a mixed bag but I booked last minute, the cost was very reasonable and I was travelling alone and would be out all day and most evenings with work anyway so thought I had nothing to lose and can happily say my concerns were entirely unfounded and I’d happily stay here again and recommend to others. I stayed three nights in room 4 and everything worked, nothing was broken, everything was clean as you’d hope for. Room 4 is a very decent sized (for Clifton) en suite with a large bed, plenty of room to mover around and very comfortable. OK, the access stairs are definitely ‘back of house’ but really who cares and you can come and go easily 24 hrs as required. Staff at the tavern were courteous, friendly and efficient (this is an excellent pub and working theatre btw, well worth popping in for a pint or catching a show if it fits your plans). There’s no breakfast service as such but there is tea and coffee and plenty of fridge space should you want to use it. The management company, Hopewell, do send rather a lot of emails but this is obviously automated and as I booked almost en route they arrived in one tranche but it had all the info I needed for a smooth arrival and checkin. The one slightly bizarre thing is the £150 credit card deposit which I can confirm I was charged, but it’s disappeared from my credit card today, 2 working days after check out. I can see that this is a bit unusual and held back my review to see if this would indeed be refunded quickly and in full and it has so I guess no real problem if somewhat atypical.

This is our third stay and is an exceptional location for exploring Bristol. I am a connoisseur of 'The Pub' as a concept. This is an example of a very fine pub. Staff are excellent, the landlord Toby has a very dry sense of humour but is a lovely bloke (just don't tell him a said so!) Book the theatre in advance, it always sells out, doesn't matter what's playing it's an experience, it's inexpensive and you get 25% off your pre theatre meal. The room itself is basic but the bed is another thing, you could play football on it it's so big and comfortable. Stay 2 nights and go explore the food on Whiteladies Road or get an Uber out to Little French an exceptional restaurant. We stay 2/3 times and year and couldn't recommend it highly enough. Somebody made an adverse comments about the entrance, it's a working pub and theatre with an entrance to 'the Green Room' and the 'Stage Door' it all lends a little quirkiness and authenticity to it all. It's a fantastic place to stay.

The shower would only run cold. The blind still needs fixing. Please Hopewell (property management company) pay attention to this. Otherwise great.

I've read a previous review slating the entrance and stairs. Come on this is working pub and theatre, what you get is authenticity. The rooms are lovely, spotless with a giant and extremely comfortable bed. The bathroom has a shower unit, none of this over the bath nonsense. The pub itself is a wonderful little jewel, hosted by the ever ebullient Toby, the beer and wine selections are exceptional and the atmosphere is great with an eclectic bunch of punters. The food is fresh and beautifully presented an delicious. The staff are exceptional and very accomodating. TIP! Pre book tickets for the theatre (it doesn't matter what's on!) We saw a wonderful one woman show called The One and Only about the music hall star Marie Lloyd. We were visiting for our 33rd wedding anniversary and I have threatened Toby that I am going again, definitely.

Nothing, absolutely nothing.

Bed was very comfortable. Large and in a spacious room. Warm Staff were all helpful, especially with finding parking. Solly particularly helpful and friendly. We ate in pub and the food was excellent. Loved the quirkiness of having a theatre in a pub. Didn’t experience any noise in room from either pub or theatre.

Stairs steep and narrow, may not suit those with mobility issues.

The bed side lamp was broken.

Alma Tavern not only had nice rooms but is a great place to hang out. You can just pop down from your room using the private entrance to the bar and chill out with a drink and some great food. I work across two offices and have already recommended The Alma Tavern to my colleagues when at the Bristol office.

The only niggle which is so small I feel guilty mentioning it is that the blind on the window in my room could do with replacing

Very nice room with convenient access to the city. The staff were friendly, the food in the bar was tasty, and yet the room itself was cozy and quiet. Highly recommended!

The steps are steep to haul a bag up, but this is really nitpicking. This is a great place and I would be happy to stay here again!

Nice pleasant room, very comfortable bed with everything you could need. The pantry is a nice touch and the bathroom a good standard

There was nothing we didn't like about the room, place or location. There was a bit of over communication about rules and check in/out

The room was lovely, clean and warm! A very comfy king sized bed and the bathroom has a great shower. Great location, easy to walk into the centre or you can jump on a bus that stops nearby. The staff at the Alma were lovely and helpful. Breakfast/ coffee station is simple but a nice touch. Would happily recommend the Alma to friends.

There was a strange smell in the room upon arrival, I had to air the room for a couple of hours. The blinds were really tricky to open and shut, definitely need to be replaced. The noise from the theatre/ pub is minimal but the walls in between rooms are very thin. The breakfast station is nice but a few tweaks could make it a lot better. I had planned to eat dinner at the pub on Tuesday eve but was notified the kitchen was closed due to staff availability which was a shame.

Comfy bed and linens, quiet surrounds, unobtrusive staff, walking distance to amenities, and parking permit (for a small fee) for a worry-free stay.

The desk-side lamp didn't work and wasn't sorted during our stay.
