Everything we needed for the occasion, great room, friendly staff, nice breakfast

Not a huge deal but the bar wasn’t always manned. Not a massive criticism, but maybe it would be good to make it clear to guests staying at the hotel when the bar will be available for service as we thought it was open from 11am. We waited from 11am to 11:45am for a drink on Sunday morning and absolutely nobody was around except for reception staff. We weren’t too bothered about it, and I guess we could’ve walked to the reception area to ask for service, but other guests might be more annoyed about having to chase down service. Perhaps if there was a function going on at the time to explain the absence of service at the bar, a sign at the bar might help guests have clarity on this.

Ample parking on arrival and a lovely welcome on reception. It's an amazing building in the Art Deco style and was used as the Railways training centre. It has a very interesting history. Our twin room didn't have much of a view but was very clean and comfortable. There is plenty of storage space, too. The bathroom was extraordinarily big to say it only had a very small shower, a toilet, and sink. We assume it used to have a bath as you could have fit a child's bed in the extra space and still get to the amenities!! We didn't get housekeeping during our 3 night stay, but anything we needed reception would sort. In our case, the house ladies were very kind and accommodated us with any extra towels and an empty bin. Breakfast was self-service, well cooked, and hot. All in all, it was a very pleasant stay for us whilst visiting National Trust properties in Derby.

The hidden history of the place that was subtly included. Obviously a quiet time so minimal staff, but those there were great. Breakfast was made to order and was top notch (including my veggie one). The fact that, with all our discounts, our stay was almost free, made it even better.

Finding the entrance in the dark was a trial if not knowing the area (Google Maps took us to the bus depot next door!) and it didn't seem like we'd found the hotel as it was all about the conference centre really. Car parking was also very confusing. Just needs clearer signage for all of this really.

The staff were absolutely lovely and did their best to give us a pleasant stay. Breakfast excellent and waitresses really helpful

I stayed in a recently refurbished room but it actually looked a bit “tired”. Disappointed that there was no fridge and no coffee making facilities in our other rooms. Bed quite uncomfortable. Couldn’t get a signal on the t.v. Showers were unpleasant- all the sealant needs to be replaced as it is so mouldy. Very difficult to actually get into the shower as it was hung in the middle and swung round with a huge step up and no grab handles to steady yourself as you get out.

The hotel was ideally situated for the purpose of my visit. The staff were extremely helpful, printing maps for the various places I needed to go to . The room was quite spacious . I liked its layout .and its facilities including a hairdryer and an iron . It was also very nice to be able to have cups of coffee or tea with biscuits. The room was very welcoming. Lots of natural light., The bed was very comfortable. I enjoyed my evening meal at the restaurant. There was a wedding on the Saturday the weekend I was there but my room being on the top floor I wasn’t inconvenienced at all.

There was some constant fairly low level noise coming from outside for which the hotel can do nothing about but once I got used to it it was fine. Other people may not be bothered by it at all. .

The room was perfect for the night. Clean, presentable and had tea, coffee and biscuits (no spoons though but we made do). The shower tray area was a little dated and old looking, but it was clean and use able. The entrance looked grand, had plenty of free secure parking and inside the reception area and restaurant area looked beautiful. Very happy and we would definitely look to stay again if we are in the area.

We didn't have any spoons for our drink but it wasn't a major thing and we made do and certainly not something I'd have complained about. We could have asked but got back very late so didn't want to disturb anyone.

The building was nice. Great location and the bed so comfortable.

The room temperature was uncomfortably hot when I initially arrived and I could not control the temperature properly because the pipework was as still very hot, even after I turned the radiator control down. Also, it would have been nice to have a bed side lamp, because the light switch for the room was by the door which meant, if you wake up in middle of the night and need switch on the light, you'd have to get out of bed. Also, not convenient if you want to read in bed, not nice to get out of bed to go to the other side of room to switch light off !

The location was excellent, right on the A6, with plenty of parking. Attracrive building and surroundings. From our first contact to get the room key, Emma, on reception, set the scene for a lovely stay with her friendly competence . The room was well appointed, and the bed comfortable the en suite was clean and a good size. The breakfast was very nice with a good selection of cooked classics (the mushrooms were excellent!) Plus cereal, yoghurt and pastries. On handing in the key at reception, I was again impressed by the friendly and helpful attitude.

Be aware there is no lift. This was not a problem for us, but it could be for others.

The staff were really friendly. Seriously, I had not expected everyone to go so far beyond in making us feel welcome. Car park was easy to use and the bed was nice and firm.

Outdated design. No restaurants or cafe nearby on foot. This isn’t their fault but they had a wedding on and the guests were drunk and loud when returning to their rooms. One tried to get into our room and really freaked us out. We were going for an early hike the next day so this wasn’t ideal. Maybe ensuring the wedding guests have minimum disturbance might be a good procedure to have in the future.

Very comfortable bed, the breakfast was really nice for the price you pay and the place was very clean. Location for me was great and there is a bus stop right outside the main gate, which I did use. Staff were all friendly and very helpful and the place is spotlessly clean. I travel alone a lot and the things I look for is cleanliness, comfort and value for money. This hotel had all 3. I will have no problem booking this hotel again next time.

Wasn't really anything I didn't like. I guess the room was quite small compared to others I have stayed in but it was very clean and thats the main thing for me.
