This hotel is fortunate enough to be based in one of the most beautiful valleys in the entire country. The rooms are very nice and the private bathroom I had was very close to my room and enormous. Both rooms were recently decorated and very clean. All of the food is home cooked and excellent. The building is 400 years old and comes with considerable charm. Since the hotel has been connected to Starlink, the Wi-Fi is very good which is handy because there is no mobile phone signal in the area. The Climbers Bar is one of my favourite pubs in the country and on a Wednesday evening and sometimes a Thursday there is often fantastic live music. The open fire is roaring and all of the staff and locals are an absolute pleasure to mix with. The pub has been rightfully voted the best in England for walkers and the excellent Theakston's Old Peculiar is the icing on the cake. You'll probably realise by now that I absolutely love the place. Already planning my next visit!

For me there are zero negatives to report.

Best location for serious walkers. Great vibe. Wonderful staff. Extremely clean. Hikers bar superb. Restorative food and drinks. Did I mention the views? It’s the last stop in the valley at the start of the great trails up to the high peaks between Great Langdale and the valleys coming in from the sea to the West. Its location is in an epic place. It’s fairly simple, so not a 5 star. But perfectly fits the walker/climber vibe and is very clean and meets all your needs. It’s been there for ages and knows what it is about.

I’m always tremendously sore after I leave, lol, due to the walks.

Very homely place to stay where the staff and other visitors seemed frendly, relaxed and very helpful. Great location for the bigger treks into the fells. There was an atmosphere there that you were a part of a hikers/climbers community, and everyone seemed easily approachable for advice.. especially weather and routes, etc. The building is warm, cosy, and clean, if not a bit old fashioned.. which was really quite a charm of the place and in keeping with the surroundings.

A TV in the room would have been good if we'd stayed longer and had a lazy day or evening in, but I totally understand why this has not been implemented, probably intentionally.

We stayed here on a walking tour of the Lakes and this was our first stop. Arriving after a long day, we were immediately made to feel welcome and at home. The staff were all lovely, the atmosphere is old-fashioned (in a nice way), cosy and comfortable, and there was a happy crowd sitting outside at the Climbers Bar. We were lucky enough to have two bathrooms, one with a shower, one with a bath. Luxury! We would definitely stay here again.

Food portions were generous and we enjoyed most of it (the chilli was excellent) but there were a few peculiarities, as though someone in the kitchen had not had much training.

The location is beautiful, with grand views of Great Langdale from the rooms and a garden out front to enjoy when the weather is fair. It is very much a walkers hotel/bar and there were no TVs in any of the rooms, which given the surroundings felt very right, but might not be for everyone. Particular shout out for how exceptionally comfortable the bed was after a long day of walking the Cumbria Way - would recommend!

Food was good, but the menu was relatively limited.

The Hotel is a very traditional Lake District building which oozes character. There are a lot of old black and white photographs displayed in the public areas of a by gone era of mountaineering and climbing history. The bar has a range of well kept beers and a great range of single malt whiskeys which go down well after a day in the hills. My parents had their honeymoon here in 1952 so this place has a sentimental effect on me particularly in the light that we scattered their ashes a mile up the valley in the shadow of Pike O Stickle a couple of years ago. Landgale was their favourite valley in the Lakes. We shall return.

Gorgeous hotel, in a beautiful location. Our room was lovely, very clean, and extremely comfortable. Excellent shower in our room. Mark, Megan, and all of their colleagues were very polite, efficient, and attentive. Food was great. Met lovely people in Climbers Bar & on the outside terrace. Very dog friendly. Lots of parking spaces. Great value for money. We can't wait for our next visit.

Would have liked a TV in the room. This wasn't a huge problem though as wifi was good, and I could watch TV on my phone.

Solo traveller. Staff made experience so relaxing. The hotel is an old building but full of character and charm. Food was great value, and you could private dine in the hotel bar or restaurant or go next door to the climbers bar for a chilled out evening with a busier flare. Bathroom private but separate to the room was spacious with lovely soft towels. I came here for nature and relaxation and was rewarded with beautiful surroundings, lovely stafffand plans to return to do some hikes.

No negatives . True Lakeland .

Breakfast was superb, breakfast options suited both a day walking and a travel day. Pre ordering breakfast the day before worked really well. Packed lunch arrangement and contents were fantastic and the traybake was a lovely surprise. The room with the fire place was a cosy way to end the days. Staff made a solo guest feel very welcome. Room was fantastic and the RAF flypast was a real treat. I will be back. Thank you.

There was nothing I did not like about The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. Personal preference though I would of preferred firmer pillows and would of liked to be able to see someone on checkout to thank them for a great stay. That said I understand that when I left they were in the middle of breakfast service. These are small things and again probably down to spending many years in Hospitality.

Lot's of parking. Room was lovely & clean. Comfy bed. Very dog friendly. Breakfast & evening meals both great. Location of the hotel is excellent for many different walks.

Some of the staff appeared to be quite unhappy. Breakfast service was very unorganised on our last day. However, Isabelle was extremely efficient, helpful and pleasant when we checked in, and then throughout our first two days.
