The hotel is in a stunning location and the building is both historic and beautiful. Good coffee with breakfast and salmon with scrambled eggs was both generous and tasty.

The hotel changed ownership a few years ago, we have stayed here several times. Whilst still pretty good overall the standards are not quite what they were. Dinner was pretty disappointing where it was previously excellent, the menu and ingredients were fine but quality of cooking below par. Small things like bread with breakfast being pre-sliced bread not home baked fresh bread/rolls as was once the case. Overall experience just not quite as special/not the same attention to detail. Could be great with a few small tweaks and maybe a stronger team in the kitchen.

it’s location near to the walks and pubs and the beautiful views. very quiet tranquil and relaxing we enjoyed watching the resident peacocks

we were in the room furthest away which was up and down quite a few stairs and not really good for my husbands legs I appreciate that this is a dog friendly hotel. however when we had our evening meal there was a dog underneath the table next to us and we did not find this acceptable when we have allergies. in the morning for breakfast they did have a designated dog area which was fine and we couldn’t understand given the size of the property why they couldn’t do this on the evening

The location and the restaurant and bar were really nice areas. The staff were all helpful and in particular Alex was really warm and welcoming from start to finish. The food was really enjoyable with a good range to choose from.

I think that an option when booking a table for dinner would have been nice to choose to eat in the restaurant or bar. I chose to pay more to eat at the Eltermere both nights but was seated in the bar (open to the public on our first night). I felt that a table should have been reserved for those paying to stay automatically. I was disappointed and felt a little put out. Having said that-the bar is beautifully restored and has a lovely ambience should you choose to eat in the bar.

Our room, Loughrigg, had a lovely view and was spacious and comfortable. The free standing bath was lovely and the water hot. Staff members were friendly and helpful. Breakfast choice was reasonable.

A few small touches would have bumped this hotel up to 10. The bath towels were too small and scratchy - we would expect bath sheets in this standard of hotel. The heated towel rail was not hot. The room itself was quite chilly on a gloomy day and the heating did not seem to be on. I hate having to make my own toast for breakfast and queue for use of the toaster and also we do not like having to choose a time slot to have breakfast. The bedroom above had very creaky floorboards, which is a peril of an old building but surely one a joiner could fix - it made for a very disturbed night, as the occupants did a lot of walking about!

When we unpacked our car, seemingly with no prompting, the gardener dropped his tools and carried our bags to our room. This "can do" attitude was evident in all the staff we encountered. As we are both pensioners the top floor room allocated was not ideal but we were quickly accommodated with an upgrade to a lower floor, at a discounted price. All our meals in the hotel were very good. When next in the area they will definitely be our first choice

Not a dislike as such but the resident Peacocks can be quite noisy at dawn but as we prefer to sleep with the bedroom window open not a problem for us. On one day our cooked breakfast took 40 mins to appear, as opposed to the usual 10 mins. we weren't offered an explanation or apology, completely out of character with the rest of our experience.

The hotel is in a number of old Victorian properties that have been adapted and combined over many decades to present a lovely "country house" feel. The rooms have a beautiful outlook over the lower reaches of Langdale and Elterwater. Because of the nature of the property there are nooks and crannies everywhere and the route to our room was full of twists and turns and ups and downs - you can imagine the Swallows and Amazons having a great time running around this place. The bedroom was spacious and well equipped. However, the small shower room required careful negotiation. The food is good, the full English breakfast is a real plateful to fuel you up for a day out on the fells. The staff are great too!

Although it was not a problem for us, the circuitous routes to the rooms and the number of steps everywhere may make this unsuitable for the less mobile. The shower in the room we had might also present problems.

Wonderful location with direct view on Elterwater. Romantic, beautifully decorated building and gardens. Good, quiet and nicely decorated room with good bed and en-suit bathroom. No noise, no smells. Excellent restaurant and professional, friendly staff. Felt like a real treat!

No hook for a towel in the bathroom, which was a bit strange in such a beautiful hotel. The sink is not in the bathroom, but in the bedroom. Looks nice, but doesn’t seem the most hygienic. When you come from the toilet you have to open the door of the bathroom first before you can wash your hands. No direct light over the shower; shower also a little complicated to use. Bed was a bit on the firm side; could have done with a top mattress.

Loved the setting and views …beautiful place decor etc very tasteful and in keeping with the property era. nice bedroom comfy bed , staff very friendly and helpful loved the peacock’s liked that it wasn’t packed and only so many rooms felt more personal. Stayed for evening meal it was lovely .

Would of liked a room with a view only had one of the roof tops and a tiny view stayed at the back near the road and seated area outside road a little busy at times as we live on a main road so would of been nicer a little quieter…for our stay also like no one to be above us and enquired if we could change but you were booked up but wasn’t to bad as above they weren’t noisy peacocks noisy especially at 4am in the morning…but been woken up by much worse haha so wouldn’t put us off wine a bit pricey £9.75 for a wine and soda .

What does good service mean to me? It means being made welcome and looked after throughout the trip with attentive and friendly staff. If you're looking for chocolate on pillows and fresh towels every half hour this may not be the place for you, but if you want to feel that the staff genuinely care about your visit and will go out of their way to meet your requests then it is. The Eltermere team delivered in spades. Thank you. Also the food is excellent, the beer well kept and the location perfect.

If I was being fussy the place is a little tired in places. The bar tables, while looking good, are not very practical for sitting and eating at (the dining room is fine). The sitting room could be cosier for hanging out in. The child bed was broken (replaced after the first night). The wifi signal was absent from our room. But this is a country house hotel and on balance it is good value for what you get and the place really is lovely - and as said in the positives, great service can make other small issues unimportant. I wouldnt be put off by the comments here, just manage expectations if looking for a 5* finish.

Eltermere was a wonderfully comfortable, friendly and spacious inn. Lots of nooks and crannies to sit and relax, or from which to enjoy the views outside (or the lovely artworks on the walls inside). We visited during a very wet period—not that this kept us indoors—but if you wanted to spend the day reading indoors, you felt that you could find your own corner in the public spaces without necessarily hiding away in your room (though I'm sure that would also be lovely). The staff were super friendly, and more so, the manager was also very kind and thoughtful with her staff members, which we always think says a lot about a business. It felt very much like a home from home.

There was nothing in particular that we didn't like, or certainly nothing that we'd be pedantantic about.
