The staff were all fantastic and so accommodating. Despite a late check-in, Mandy made sure there was a hot dinner still available, the rooms were fantastic - a great size, comfortable and well decorated - and then in the morning, when I still had work I needed to complete, I was able to stay in the lounge despite being outside the opening hours, to complete my work and still order drinks etc. The venus is in a little village with not much going on, but it's a great jumping off point to explore the borders. Following this stay, my partner and I have both said that we'll be back to visit, and use the black bull any time we're in the area. I would thoroughly recommend staying here - you'll not be disappointed.

We booked last minute because our boat trip back from Newcastle was cancelled due to storm: it was the only reasonably priced room we could find in the area and we were pleasantly surprised on our arrival. The hotel is situated in a small village with a few small shops close by. The room was clean and comfortable, and the area was quiet. The room felt cold at first when we dropped off our things, but was nicely warm by the time we got back in the evening. The bed was comfortable, and the bathroom modern and clean. At the ground floor is a large restaurant/bar where guests can grab a meal/drink. The restaurant and bar seemed to be well visited by travelers and locals alike. The meals were very tasty and promptly brought, plenty of choice. The restaurant is set up a bit like a maze, so most tables have some privacy. The location was beautifully decorated for Christmas, and it has fireplaces where one can sit with a cup of coffee or another drink for a chat. Really very inviting.
The breakfast form we had to fill in was somewhat confusing :)

I loved how homie, cozy the room was. The shower had more than enough space. I liked how the bathroom mirror has antifog built into it. The thing I loved the most was the super comfy bed you just melt into and don't want to to get out of. The staff I encountered were all very kind.
Didn't like how far the TV was from the bed, especially with it's small size. You have to raise the volume more than you'd like, because of the distance. I also don't like carpet with all the germs, dirt, smells, etcetera it traps, but it wasn't a deal breaker, I found a workaround.

Christmas atmosphere was lovely and tastefully.done. Bedroom was beautiful, tastefully decorated, bed so comfy with beautiful cotton sheets. The shower was to die for and the huge thick bath sheets.....amazing. All staff, waiting, cleaners and owners friendly and very attentive. Thank you.

The Bull is an excellent location to base yourself for the Borders and visits to Edinburgh. The Hotel is located on the Market Place of Lauder, with parking to the rear of the property. The Hotel combines stylish bedrooms with refined dining areas containing hand crafted Tables and chairs. You are provided a breakfast sheet to select items for the following morning. Breakfast both cooked and continental were excellent, but no option to combine both at the same time. Gluten free options are available. Dinner was excellent, with the occasional interesting interpretation of classical dishes, we thoroughly enjoyed our weekend stay, with a very attentive host.
Dinner had some interesting options the Beef Stroganoff (beef cream and mushrooms) was steak and ratatouille so we a added for cream. Did not try deserts or cheese.

It was our first time staying in the Scottish Borders, the location The Black Bull Hotel Lauder was fantastic, full of history and character . We couldn't have asked for more, fabulous staff, we were made to feel at home, great variety of menus. Our stay was for 5 nights over the August Bank Holiday weekend which coincided with the annual LAUDER COMMON RIDING WEEK 2023 event, creating a great buzz in the town and it was really decked out for the occasion. We would highly recommend The Black Bull to friends and family as a 1st class location to stay, you won't be disappointed.

Perfect hotel for a short stay. Great base for exploring the borders. Lovely spacious & clean room. Furnishings & decor modern & characterful. Fresh flowers throughout the hotel. Friendly, chatty & informative hands-on owners & compliments to the chef, as the food was the best we’d had in much of Scotland when travelling. Decent selection of drinks at the bar & the dining environment was the right mix of decorative but informal. Highly recommend & great value for the price.

We got married at a venue near the black bull and stayed here the night after our wedding. It was a lovely relaxing stay. The hotel staff were very friendly and welcoming and the hotel itself was decorated beautifully. The room was lovely and the bed very comfy. We also had a really nice meal in the evening which was very tasty. Some of our wedding guests also stayed the night of our wedding and all really enjoyed their stay. The manager Paul was particularly helpful when we realised we had accidentally left something behind when we checked out. Couldn’t recommend more!

Wow, what a find! A fantastic hotel in the small market town of Lauder in the Scottish Borders. The main hotel is wonderfully decorated and presented to a very high standard making for a friendly and relaxing environment. The food in the main restaurant was very, very good and the breakfast the following morning was just about perfect. We stayed in the triple room which is located in the courtyard and offers additional privacy if you don’t want to stay in the main hotel. This is its own self-contained accommodation with separate double and single bedrooms which is perfect for 3 adults or 2 adults travelling with a child. The beds are so comfy that a good night’s sleep is all but guaranteed. This is one of those rare hotels that will make it on to the ‘visit again’ list and cannot be recommended highly enough.

Comfortable large bed. Luxury towels. Location. Quiet. Room perfect. Tea/coffee facilities in room. Huge bath and shower unit in large ensuite. Toiletries supplied. Staff all delightful. Food was great tasting and portions plentiful. Daily housekeeping......not really necessary for a 2 or 3 night stay. With super linen and towels, your laundry bills must be huge! If daily housekeeping was as requested, maybe a later checkout would be possible. That said, 1st class attention to room cleanliness can't be faulted. Well done on that area. Certainly stay again. Ample on street parking and hotel has a car park too. Quiet village with local shops, bars etc.
10 am checkout.
