We felt very welcome from start to finish. The detached barn is a great size and very comfortable. The gardens and views were lovely in the frost and snow. We’ll be back in the summer to see it again in full bloom. Thank you Alan for the local information and homely cooked breakfast.

Like other reviews do take an extra blanket and some slippers for the winter months although it hit -5 during our stay and we still made the room nice and cozy.

The room was comfortable and beautifully furnished. I was in the India Room and the artwork and ornaments were stunning. My hosts went to exceptional lengths to ensure my dietary needs were met. The Cascades garden were incredible, peaceful and worthy of much time to absorb the stillness and the light. Informal chats with my host Alan over breakfast or in the gardens were valuable.

I really loved the house. It's so beautiful and in a really peaceful, central location. But having unlimited access to the wonderful gardens was the best thing for me. It was so calming. Just what you need when you are on holiday. My room (India) was really lovely, so comfortable and clean and it had everything you could possibly need. The bathroom was huge, with plenty of hot water, a very good shower and it had a good supply of toiletries. There is a waterfall just outside the room, as part of the gardens, which I found very restful and I slept really well there. The breakfast was excellent, with plenty of choice. Alan was incredibly kind and helpful and he just wants you to have everything you need to have a lovely break. He is also such an interesting person, who has lived a fascinating and unusual life, and he has some good stories to tell! Alan has lived there for many years and knows all the best places to go and how to avoid the traffic! All in all, I had a wonderful week there and I would have no hesitation in returning, or recommending it to others. Thank you, Alan and Alesia, for a lovely holiday.

I can't actually think of one thing I didn't like.

We were made welcome by our host and given all the details we needed. We opted out of breakfast as we are not early risers..Jake the cat was very welcoming also. Very cosy cottage and an ultra modern bathroom. Very quiet at night apart from the rain, the waterfalls, and the local Owl so no complaints there then. The nearest pub The King's Head was only 10 minutes walk but we only had one drink and left as they do not serve food on a Tuesday. The other local pub was shut on aTuesday so we walked into Cromford (take a torch or two as essential)to the Boat and grabbed something that was enough to fill us there. We awoke next day and it was lovely to see the waterfall directly in front of our door and the rain had let up. We took a tour of the large ornate gardens and had Jake the cat as our guide, very impressive. After a day out walking in Chatsworth taking in the festive market we returned and made use of the wonderful spa bath facility. We then dined at the Kings Head and the food was lovely, especially the Steak and Kidney pudding and the Chicken pie...but beware the portions are enormous. We left the cottage at 11.00 next morning Very satisfied and rested. A very nice stay.

We stayed in the India Suite, which was roomy, quiet, and comfortable, with a large en suite. Good choice at breakfast and an attentive host. We spent time sitting in the garden both days we were there and found it relaxing and renewing.

Can't think of anything!

The peace, the privacy, the space of the accommodation, the gardens, its unique qualities.

Nothing major per se. We struggled to find it in the dark, the driveway is quite narrow too. It’s a lovely room, however I found the bed rather hard (my hubby liked that though), the bathroom would benefit from some towel rails and it definitely needs floor mats for the bath and shower area - there was only one mat in front of the sink. It needs an extraction fan I think to help with moisture control as the wooden bathroom door was swollen and would not shut. Very homely and welcoming hosts though, lovely breakfast and tranquil gardens to sit in.

The whole house is suffused with a sense of calm and old fashioned gentility. It is full of beautiful or interesting art, and mementos of the host's apparently very interesting life. The atmosphere of the house is certainly conducive to a relaxing stay. We stayed in the India room which was furnished very comfortably and contained the best selection of books ever encountered in a guest house. The bathroom was enormous with classic fitments in keeping with the age of the property and beautiful tiles. Breakfast was very good and the personal service much appreciated. The outside space was beautiful and having access to the wonderful garden a real treat.

We had a fabulous stay at this unique and tranquil property. Our cottage was beautiful, cosy and comfortable. The spa bath for two was perfect for a soak after a day walking. Our host Richard gave us a warm welcome and a delicious breakfast every day.We were able to take full advantage of the wonderful gardens which are truly stunning and a testament to his skill and knowledge. We even had the opportunity to buy some unusual quality plants at a great price. The whole stay was a great experience and we will definitely return.

Nothing , however be aware that there are limited options for eating out within walking distance on Monday evenings. Use of a car is essential.

Lovely old house with amazing gardens and bonsai displays in the greenhouses. Alan was the perfect host! He met us on arrival, with a very warm and informative welcome. The bedroom was large and very comfortable and warm with lots of interesting artefacts and pictures from Alan’s travel in India and Nepal. Huge bathroom with everything you would need. A good breakfast with charming service by Alan himself. Even in January the gardens were beautiful and peaceful, and as Alan was there working in them he told us about the history and creation of the various garden spaces. A wonderful stay in a very special space.

The location was perfect for our Matlock area sightseeing trip, the added bonus of being able to access the cascade garden at anytime was a real treat. And we can't forget to mention the cat - the star of our stay.

Just a personal thing but the mattress has seen better days especially if you are used to a memory foam bed at home but don't let this put you off from booking a stay
