As you read this, keep in mind that I gave the Shaw House Inn a 10, the highest possible rating. It is a truly wonderful place. Having said that, the house is something like 170 years old. You cannot compare a stay here by the standards that would apply to any modern hotel. We stayed in the Garden room, and our private bathroom was two doors down (most rooms are en suite). It was also fabulous with a large clawfoot tub that required a large step to get into and out of. Some of the windows in the House are so old that they are slightly distorted. I do not think that any wall, door or floor is completely true. Having said that, my wife and I absolutely loved the place and are already planning to go back. Everything about the Shaw House is unique, and the house is tended with such care that it seems as if the owner walks each room every night to make sure that everything is perfect. When we arrived, Paula was very welcoming and showed us to our cozy room and around the common areas of the house. All the staff members were very pleasant and helpful. The breakfasts consisted of really well-made individual quiches or croissant sandwiches, muffins, fresh fruit, and the coffee is really good. We had our breakfast each morning at a small table in front of a window with a lovely view of the grounds in a room beautifully decorated with antiques. We found the bed to be very comfortable, and we slept really well lulled to sleep in part by the sound of running water from a fountain or stream outside our window. One evening, rather late, I sat and read in the (library?) in a very comfortable, very large chair and felt like I was home. It was and is a great place.

What didn't we like? We loved everything about the place. One thing, though, our bathroom was private, but we would have preferred it if it was en suite (like all the other bathrooms in the house).

Basically everything, we were greeted by the owner who showed us around, we didn't really see her again, which was ok for us and as we were the only guests there (another couple came in very late) we had the place to ourselves. We loved sitting outside, having a drink, then moved to the parlour. The grounds were lovely, the house is 130 years old and the decor reflected that, but we loved that. Breakfast was good, Nicole the cook was lovely, it's not a typical breakfast, we had bacon, sausages and an apple pancake. We had a quiet night's sleep in a comfortable bed. The town was lovely and had several options for dinner.

We knew there was no shower, just a bath but no big deal for one night - wish we could have stayed longer.

This is the oldest house in Ferndale and an essential part of the Ferndale history. Staying in this accommodation is like taking a step back in time. The amenities have been updated an each room is decorated to fit it's theme. There is full access to tee and coffee 24/7. The grounds of the property are gorgeous. The house is very clean and the beds are extremely plush.

Beautiful home and grounds to enjoy. Rooms either have garden or courtyard view. Lots of places to sit and relax both inside and outside on the property. Lots of extras like books, games, DVDs, ect. Staff is friendly and very helpful. Snacks, coffee, tea and breakfast included.

The cleaning service uses straight bleach. The room we booked was lovely, but smelled strongly of bleach from the bathroom. The bathroom windows did not open and the smell was throughout the room. Unfortunately, bleach gives me migraines quickly. Luckly, there was another room available that was larger and only smelled of bleach in the bathroom. We were able to open the bathroom window in the new room. I was able to stay in that room without smelling the bleach and limited use of the bathroom. Staff told me next time to let them know in advance and they could accommodate me with no bleach. Paula was very kind to change our room to one that worked for me and I really appreciate her doing so. I love the Shaw House and would recommend a stay there to anyone visiting Ferndale.

The setting is very pretty, the bed was comfortable and it is within walking distance to the restaurants and shops. It’s very quiet and we liked listening to the birds. Breakfast was good with quiche and sausage one morning as well as fruit cups, muffins and egg crepe a second morning. The bath towels are thick, not like those flimsy towels you see in many hotels.

The bathroom floor mats are very warm and could use an update. TV only worked with Apps which was too confusing for us who don’t use Apps on our TV.

The property is extremely well maintained despite its age. The grounds are lovely and provide abundant places to sit and enjoy the quiet. The bedroom was attractively decorated; bed comfortable; shower great and tub great for a soak. The common rooms in the house are large, well furnished and inviting. Breakfast was terrific: homemade banana muffins, scrambled eggs and cottage potatoes &/or a small souffle. There was fresh fruit; juices and a variety of other refreshing drinks in addition to coffee and tea. Very nicely prepared & delicious.

The only minor inconvenience we experienced was a glitchy TV, which we could never quite get to respond. Full disclosure, this issue could very well have resulted from operator error. But it didn't matter to us anyway as we had an internet connection and reading material.

Timeshift to the victorian. Very nice and quiet place. The breakfast was incredible. Sitting in the window place, enjoying the cool ambiance while a deer is walking through the garden. We loved it!

Ferndale is nice and kind of beautiful. When you have walked up and down the main street- that’s it. A small selection of restaurants -unfortunately we chose the wrong one- and one bar. You better hit over to Eureka for dinner.

It was a very quaint little B & B, we had a claw foot tub in our room, so that was interesting…. but made it work. If we could have had a window that opened for fresh air that would have been alright. Other than that, was a very comfortable and cute place to stay. Breakfast was delicious!

a window that opened, we just had a ceiling fan and it didn’t seem like the window opened.

The Shaw House is a perfect bed and breakfast. My room was large and had a separate deck and entrance. There were three beautiful sitting rooms to sit and read in after dinner that were super comfortable. Breakfast was wonderful…generous and scrumptious. It was self serve during certain hours so you could come when convenient. The location is in historic downtown Ferndale, an interesting Victorian town with a large unique cemetery. Although I don’t have a dog, I believe they accept pets in certain rooms. I totally recommend the Shaw House…we did many great hikes in the redwoods from there.

It was charming and so cozy! My husband and I took a scenic drive without the kids and this was the best trip we could ask for! We arrived and were treated to a tour around the Victorian and yummy homemade lemon bars! Ferndale was amazingly scenic and everyone in town was so friendly! Breakfast was a special treat on gorgeous China! We sat in the parlor next to a beautiful garden and enjoyed our coffee and homemade waffles with Peach compote. We enjoyed every minute of it!
