Hotel Rex

Right by the train station and just outside the city walls. Very comfortable room with a kettle and a plentiful supply of tea/coffee and biscuits. Friendly staff and a very good breakfast. A very unique hotel, a million miles away from bland, corporate chains.

The hotel is an older solid building right in front of the train station and across the street from the city walls - which means everything is in walking distance. The room is spacious and the beds comfy enough with nice sheets. The bathroom was roomy with a nice sized shower and plenty of hot water and good water pressure. The breakfast was very generous with pastries, breads, cereals, yogurts, fruits, fruit juices, various teas and coffees, meats and cheeses and hard boiled eggs. All of the staff is extra friendly and helpful. All with an affordable price.

This is an older hotel so don’t expect the Crowne Plaza. Great friendly staff in an excellent location 2 minutes from the station so no lugging of cases to the far end of Lucca. Room was comfortable but in a summer heatwave the poor air con would be an issue for our USA guests. For our 1 night stay it was just fine with a very good breakfast included. The mature gentleman checking us in was a pleasure to talk too with a good command of English and on asking pointed us to an excellent restaurant in the town frequented by locals. Great food at proper prices and no greeters trying to entice you in at inflated prices.

Nothing, it was just what we wanted at a good price for a popular destination.

My single room was spacious and very clean with plenty of storage space and there was a fridge/minibar in the bedroom. The en-suite bathroom was also very clean and towels and toiletries were provided. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfast was excellent with plenty of choices (both savoury and sweet). The location is excellent as it is only a few metres from the railway station and a few minutes' walk from the entrance gate to the old city. Despite the fact that the hotel is near the city centre and the railway station, it is very quiet. Highly recommended.

Excellent location - very near the train station and the entrance to Lucca. Easy to find this hotel. We did some day trips out of Lucca and were very happy that the train station was only a few minutes walk. The beds were comfortable. A small fridge with a freezer was very much appreciated. Large room with plenty of space for luggage. Very nice friendly, staff, very accommodating with any request for assistance.

It is definitely dated in appearance, but we already expected that after reading about this hotel in Rick Steves guide. Removing some of the dust collecting clutter (ornaments, flower arrangements, toys, decorations, and other do-dads) would go a long way toward improving the look and feel of the rooms and common areas. However, the location of this accommodation is totally worth it.

The proximity to the train was only a few steps as well as the location to “old town Lucca”. This is set up to be family friendly with many toys and games available for children. The service was awesome with the breakfast abundant which included freshly baked pasties, fruit, yogurt, granola, hard boiled eggs, meat/cheeses, fresh rolls, cappuccino and extra coffee and hot milk for refills. Being able to rent bikes at a great rate across the street was a bonus for bike rides along the river or to Pisa. The ride share city bikes (electric and regular) along with 4 wheeled buggies are readily available within the old town for biking on the path above the city!

Occasionally you hear sirens from the city but this didn’t bother our stay!

Great location, 50 meters from train station of course. We conversed in English and Italian. Great recommendations for restaurants. The staff was so friendly and even prepared a special take out breakfast for our friends to take with them to Rome on 6 AM train. They did this hours before the scheduled breakfast hours for guests. That is a special thing and will always remember that gesture of kindness. Breakfast had a huge selection of items and I give it a 8 of 10. Loved watching the city wake up from our room overlooking the park and fountain. The rooms were spotless. Good pressure in the shower and again a spotless bathroom. Walking distance to the inner-walls of Lucca shops and restaurants. This place is a true gem and fairly priced. We highly recommend it.

The beds were a little too firm for us but fine for the night. :)

This was my second visit to this hotel. The bedroom (three single beds) was very spacious and clean with plenty of storage space and the beds were very comfortable. The bathroom was spacious and clean with toiletries and towels provided. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfast is excellent with plenty of choices, both sweet and savoury. The location is excellent as it is close to the railway station and the city centre. Highly recommended.

I loved my 2 nights at Hotel Rex in Lucca. If you want modern decor this isn’t the place for you. But if you like good value, friendly, efficient staff, clean facilities, a good breakfast (including boiled eggs, ham and cheese), and a location just a few steps from the train station but also next to the old city, this hotel is ideal. I had a single bed in room 28 but it was a very big single bed, more like a standard double. I would certainly stay at Hotel Rex again if I came back to Lucca.

The location of the hotel was perfect for our needs. Just a few yards from the train station and only a ten minute walk to the walled town. The facilities are excellent. The room was a good size and the breakfast is one of the best that we have experienced in many years of travel with the exception of a cooked breakfast option. Just a short walk away was a great bar (Bar Cupido) which had a very good menu for lunch and a really good burger outside of lunch hours (the lunch menu closes at 3.00pm). Tea and coffee available in the room.

Two things! Hopefully you will not be spending a lot of your time watching television but the one in the room is pathetic with appalling sound! For a few euros more it would be a worthwhile investment and a broader choice of channel options, especially English channels. You get BBC news and CNN only. I am no longer the slim young thing that I once was but if I was any fatter I wouldn't have been able to get into the shower! The access gap is really narrow!
