Zaan Hotel Amsterdam - Zaandam

Lovely, modern rooms with comfortable beds. Zaandam is a nice and quiet town, out of the hustle and bustle and nowhere near as busy or crowded as Amsterdam! A supermarket, train station and the town centre is right opposite the Hotel. This is a great place to stay if you’re wanting to visit Amsterdam but don’t want to pay triple the price on accommodation for half the quality. Only 2 stops on the train to Amsterdam or Zaanse Schans and other neighbourhoods. Would highly recommend.

Modern room with huge bathroom with walk in shower and all facilities (fridge, coffee/tee maker, safe, hairdryer..). Very large lobby. I was working from the lobby in the early mornings and could get coffee from the breakfast room, except one morning when the lady on breakfast duty told me I had to pay for each coffee (which doesn't make sense as it's free in the room, you can request refills for the coffee machine any time - but you don't want to make coffee in the room at 4 am when your child is sleeping). So this lady was making it a bit difficult, but the rest of the staff 100% great. The location can't be better - supermarket 1 minute, train station with frequent and fast connection to Amsterdam 3 minutes, a very nice town center 5 minutes walking.

Don't plan a long bike tour with the rental bikes - they are good for short trips, but the saddles are horribly hard. Also the pillows are very thick, so for cervical spine damaged people it's difficult to sleep with them.

Although Zaandam is very close to city center, note that Zaandam train station is not covered by Amsterdam Travel Card but you should buy Amsterdam & Region Travel Card. We had ATC validated at the airport and we were in trouble because we coudn't exit the station and there was nobody at the ticket office. Fortunatelly, very helpful local help us and got us new tickets from the vending machine at the station so we can get out.

The price of the hotel was too expensive

Huge room and a great location. Very fast train connections to Amsterdam, Haarlem and Zaanse Schaans. Fridge in room. Very clean.

The character of the room didn't reflect the amazing outside of the building, however this was outweighed by loads of space for a family of four. Be warned! No Visa or MasterCard in the supermarkets.

Out of town centre yet with excellent train connections to the airport, city centre and outlying attractions (Zaanse Schams). Good breakfast and bathroom.

No cleaning of rooms, despite high price tag (E220 pn - I was staying in a peak period). I should have requested a different type of pillow: it was bulky and unusable. Hotel has taken unexplained additional payments - I am investigating.

The location is great- 3 min from train, 2 min from supermarket and less than 5 from a shopping center/cafes (most places close at 18:00). It is a 12 min train to Amsterdam and a few minutes away from Zaanse Schans. The area was very quiet at night. The breakfast is quite nice- although not exactly cheap, I can say that the large variety and quantity- are worth it in comparison to what you may get at many cafes. The staff was polite and also happily filled my water bottle at any time of the day. No problems with wifi.

3 things prevent me from giving an even higher rating- 1. My room was in a very noisy spot- next to a utility closet that was opened and closed at all times and woke me up (in addition to the 2 elevators and other rooms next to me). I told the front desk, they said they would tell house keeping, but didnt really help. 2. The AC temperature is controlled by the main desk, and twice I had to call the front desk to have the temperature significantlly lowered. This is frustrating, however, both times it was done immediately and the AC works very well. 3. The bed I had was two twins together- 2 single mattresses. I always felt like my mattress was slipping/moving and it was uncomfortable. However, the mattress itself is very comfy.

The hotel was lovely, and right next to the train station, with easy access straight into Amsterdam, and the Johan Cruff Stadium, there is also a supermarket right across the road, the beds were really comfy, shower was lovely and warm, very modern hotel. One room was ready when we arrived early, so could leave all the luggage in there, it also has a safe which was good.

Could of done with more English channels on the tv, it only had BBC2. Spoons in the room would of been nice, instead of the wooden sticks to stir the tea and coffee. Paying the holiday tax for children.

The Zaan Hotel is a very nice building, the room we had was a twin deluxe which included a fridge we made use of, also a coffee machine. The ensuite was attractive with a well soundproofed door, hairdryer, soaps, magnifying mirror, and push button shower. The towels were replaced each day if left on the bathroom floor, and the beds made each day. The view from the 3rd floor in front of the building across the paved area was fine and there was a good breeze if you wanted the window open. The aircon worked well when I asked reception to activate the fan which I found out they do from their end, so don't hesitate to ask especially with the current weather. We had no noises coming from any other rooms, and the bar below which has an outside area was not an issue either. The bar and restaurant looked very clean, fashionable and welcoming, but we did not take advantage. Just 30 seconds across the way is a good supermarket if you want to stock the fridge with drink, cold meat etc, or pick up bread. There is also a very good Turkish restaurant/takeaway next to that. When you arrive by train, you leave the station and turn right for a few feet and then get the public stairway down, or take the lift and then walk across the courtyard/open area to the Zaan Hotel, which is actually visible from the station platform, so not far at all. Unfortunately both the lift, and up escalator stairs on this occasion were not working until the day we left of our 4 day weekend stay, so just worth a mention if you don't travel light, you may need to ask friendly locals for assistance. Turn left out of the Zaandam station and you discover a very nice shopping precinct, that will keep all ages happily spending, or just relaxing as we did every evening on the waterfront Intel Hotel bar.

Nothing. Very smart Hotel and good value for money. Would stay again even though away from Amsterdam City, the trains (only 2 stops) were faultless, & it felt like a village atmosphere when we returned after a days sightseeing, with so many bars, restaurants and shops. ( Local shops close early, by 6pm for most) A pleasant surprise.
