How lucky we were to find João and Graça's beautiful guest house. I cannot begin to tell you of the exquisite charm of every corner. Our rooms were so comfortable and beautiful. The bathroom is ensuite and perfect. The breakfast, so graciously served by Graça and her staff was delicious and enchanting...magical. João and Graça also helped us by arranging a wonderful tour of Coimbra with Janet who was so informative, kind and patient. (We were so tired after Lisbon and a train strike!) And, they arranged a day trip to Tomar for us, helped us by Whatsapp when we had questions from anywhere and gave us lifts and tips to restaurants. I had picked this place because it was near the university. I had no idea how great it would be. We came as guests and left as friends. We hope our Coimbra friends will visit NYC!!!!

Wow! This was one of our all time favorite inns. Jaoa and Graça are so lovely and helpful. They helped us plan our stay, made us a delicious breakfast and gave us a sense of the history and importance of this tiny, beautiful town. Their enthusiasm for their home and their city are infectious. The room was lovely, quiet, comfortable. Great air conditioning, great toiletries, great mattress, great wifi. The common spaces are beautiful and decorated with incredible light fixtures and beautiful antique and modern furniture. It's a small in, so even when fully occupied you can enjoy quiet time in the beautiful outdoor patio garden or the kitchen or salon. Fully stocked fridge with snacks and cold water. Just a perfect getaway.

Republica Guest House is a family run hotel that treats you like a member of their family. Graca and Joao go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable and feel like you are at home. The rooms are everything you need and very clean. The house is open to you including a nice sitting area downstairs where you can watch TV, raid the refrigerator, and enjoy some Portugues beer, wine, or port, before or after dinner – on the house – just like at home. The guest house is in a great location: about 10-minute walk to The University of Coimbra and 10 minutes to the old town shopping area and restaurants. Graca gave us several good recommendations for dinner and a free fado performance which we thoroughly enjoyed. The highlight of the Republica Guest house was the breakfast. Served family style around a large breakfast table, you enjoy freshly cooked eggs, a variety of ham and sausage, fresh bread, fresh fruits including figs, strawberries, blueberries, freshly squeezed orange juice, and a delicious pound cake baked by Graca. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely return. Highly recommend if you are visiting Coimbra.

Everything was great!

This was a great place to stay in Coimbra, very close to the university and museum, and within a short walk of the main old town/restaurant area, but easy to reach by car and only a few steps to haul luggage up to. Our room was lovely, with rustic-shabby-chic style decor. Everything worked well. The breakfasts were wonderful with a large range of high quality ingredients including freshly squeezed orange juice, crunchy cereal, eggs to order (fried egg was really good), and delicious cheeses. We received all sorts of useful information and the hosts looked after us well despite having quite a lot of different guests staying within a short period of time.

Our room could have been larger: it was fine for a short stay. Sometimes it was slightly noisy - due to being near the door we could hear other guests, but it was not a problem at night.

The owners and staff - Joao, Ana, Janet - were so helpful. They booked an amazing boat trip, gave us an orientation to Coimbra, and even gave us a ride when we needed it. The building is gorgeous - if a bit vertically challenging like most places in older parts of the cities of Portugal. They provided an amazing breakfast - try the pumpkin jam with the bread! - and port and drinks at night.

The ladder to the loft for a room of three would be fine for a child or young adult - tough for a family of three older adults. We treated it like an adventure since we had not given the hosts a heads up.

The owner and Janet were extremely helpful and knowledgeable, in short, amazing! Upon check in, we got a full briefing (with a map) on Coimbra: history, what to see, and restaurant recommendations. The breakfast was delicious, homemade and plentiful. They went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and at home. The courtyard was lovely and access to coffee, tea, water, beer all day was appreciated. The rooms and common areas were spotless. I highly recommend it!

Nothing, the only minor suggestion I have is a mirror in our room in addition to the bathroom would have been helpful so we could get ready at the same time.

Location is great, walkable to the university, the river, and the main pedestrian thoroughfare with lots of shops and restaurants. The hotel is cutely decorated, with a comfy bed and new bathroom. Although the university students had a party not too far away the night we stayed, we were able to close the shutters for a pretty quiet night's sleep. The owner was super friendly and helpful, and excited to share her city with us.

I believe this hotel is listed with Parking, but it's metered street parking around the hotel (which is inexpensive, but has to be managed). The owner will provide you with a map of where free street parking can be found though.

Graça was so welcoming, she showed us all the facilities, explained everything, showed us our room which was great, cozy, right close to the door, with everything we needed. The district is at the border between the old and the new cities, and is very much alive and nice to walk by, a few minutes walking to the University. The breakfast was great, full of options and really tasty. Would totally recommend.

To say something, the room was a little bit smaller than expected but that was fine. The neighbourhood, being so close to the university, can get some partying noises during the night, but that's not something the hotel cannot control of course.

The hosts Graça & João (although we only met Graça) are exceptional and so welcoming. We also met another lady who dealt with our check-in and was super helpful at giving us an overview of Coimbra and a guide of what to see and where to eat (recommendations that we followed and we were not disappointed). It is also in a very good location for exploring the main sites. The breakfast was delightful.

We didn't like that we only stayed for 1 night - we wished we had stayed a bit longer in Coimbra especially with such excellent hospitality.

The moment you enter the guest house, you feel genuinely welcome. The owners Graça and João (and Janet!!) will go above and beyond to make sure your stay is exceptional. Breakfast was one of the best we've ever had. The location of the guest house is perfect for exploring Coimbra and the hosts provide you great tips. We had an unfortunate incident with our rental car while in Coimbra and João couldn't be more supportive & helpful (once again, a BIG thank you!). If you plan a trip to Coimbra, make sure you book a room at República Guest House!
