Quintinha Sao Joao Hotel & Spa

Staff were very friendly and helpful. Good location, short walk into town ( steepish hill). Our room was comfortable. Hotel was very quiet, fully booked but hardly ever saw anyone else.

The spa had a very limited selection of massages available. The staff member we spoke to wasn't overly helpful. We didn't particularly like the food, dinner the first night wasn't great so we only had breakfast from then on. Coffee was undrinkable every morning. Cold buffet was Ok, not that extensive and no changes from day to day. We tried the cooked breakfast twice and again not impressed

Restaurant : we visited Sao Joao because an ex-colleague had recommended the Quinta. Throughout our stay, the level of empathy across the staff was exceptional. One night of our three nights, we ate in the restaurant. The delicious food was undoubtedly the best of the three evening meals that we experienced. It was presented with flair and the restaurant staff once again demonstrated real warmth.

All aspects of our stay were extremely good. I wish that we had had a drawer in our bathroom, as I had to leave all our toiletries spread about the surfaces. And a bin in the main room would have been nice.

I wish to give them 100 not 10 ,we have met with love specially my baby ,early checkin ,perfect breakfast ,provided soft drink and water to the room , clean room with prett view and the people in reception are the heroes they saved our vacation and borrowed us a baby stroller until we receive ours and provide us with early breakfast in the room as we have early plan even our trip guide (not booked through the hotel) told us you choosed a lovely hotel, thank you dear

Rooms were very large and comfortable, the complimentary fresh bottled water each day was a nice touch. Courtesy mini bus to and from the centre was useful. All the staff were very helpful and pleasant. The breakfast selection was exceptional as was the standard of food, so well in fact, that we decided to use it all week for our main meal in the evenings off of their a la carte menu.

There was a problem with the air conditioning in our room (#107) all week , we understand though that it was a new system.

The hotel staff is amazing and made us felt welcome. It is a relatively small hotel, so you don't feel here like just another costumer, but you get to know all the members of the staff. We loved the restaurant - the food and the service were excellent. Also we were pleasently surprised that the hotel services' prices were very reasonable, sometimes even a bargain. The garden is very pleasant, even nicer than in the pictures.

The location is not the best if you want to walk everyday to the harbour and the old town. But it is a price for staying in a historical villa. And I think it is still have some highlights as you are outside of the busy part of town. I wish there was some place dedicated to small kids, even some board games in a game room would be nice.

The best thing about this hotel was the food - absolutely excellent! A freshly cooked breakfast was available everyday with a large menu to choose from. We ate in the hotel every evening, partly because it was an energetic 15 min walk to the centre and partly because the food was so good why leave after a tiring day exploring? The staff were all very friendly. Our room was comfortable and very quiet

The hotel is on the edge of the centre which means it might not be the ideal location for people with mobility problems or who don't like a bracing walk. We welcomed having some exercise - especially after so much delicious food. The pool was on the small side but acceptable for a city hotel. I swam every day and I always had it to myself which was a bonus!

Really lovely old style hotel with plenty of indoor seating area, nice bar with piano player in evening (history was it was originally some sort of manor house). Small but nice Gardens, good sized room with balcony and super king comfy bed, excellent staff ( very friendly and couldn't do enough for you without being OTT) . The buffet breakfast was excellent (even a glass of bubbly if you wanted it!!) all the usual cereals, cheers, hams, fruits, pastries etc etc and then a great selection from the cooked section.

No aircon in room (this we were advised was in process of being updated throughout the hotel) not too much of an issue in April but wouldn't want to not have it in Mid summer.

It was one of my best vacations!) Those wonderful people who created this hotel must love people very much, because the place is amazing. And the territory is like an oasis, so green and full of unique plants! Ambience is so peaceful and relaxing) Our room was with a balcony, spacious and really clean) the food in the restaurant and in Vasco da Gama bar was delicious! I’ll attach a photo of our breakfast and two lunches at Vasco da Gama) you’ll see that we loved the pasta - capellini with mushrooms:) I’m vegetarian and I could easily find tasty options) And also the whole place is sooo stylish, so many beautiful details and fresh flowers! And the view from the room of course! I’ll also attach the photo) A huge thank you to this place and Madeira❤

Maybe even more options for vegetarians, and it would be really great if at spa it were more serene: for me personally it’s hard to relax fully when somebody’s walking fast behind the door or talks loudly, so I’m sure everybody’s spa experience would be better due to this)

staff were phenomenal, always happy to help, with great ideas for what to do and where to go. Some superb restaurant recommendations (thanks Pedro!); service with a smile in the restaurant (Filipe, Mathias!); some fab cocktails at the bar (Antonio). amenities clean, the pools are clean and well kept, and it’s only a short (if hilly) walk into town.

We had upgraded to a garden view room with an balcony. The room had a sofa and was very spacious. The room was cleaned everyday and the housemaids turned the bed down between 5pm-7pm, at the same time, they would giev the room and quick clean by emptying and bins, replacing towels and toiletries. Every single member of staff were friendly, welcoming and made us feel at home

I wouldn't say dislike as I already knew that the hotel is sey slight up the hills. Walking doen to town was fairly easy and took about 10/15 minutes. On the way back, we also took a taxi at a small cost of 6-10 Euros
