As there were numerous lodging options in Springfield, I did what I always do and created a Venn diagram. The Carpenter Street Inn was subsequently booked for $82+tax (less a $25 voucher from booking.com) as it was the only lodging contained in the intersection of the sets of Price, Location, Habitability, and Cancelabilty. It's the most nondescript hotel I ever stayed in. A three-story gray building with no signage except for a very modest sign marking the entrance to the parking lot. Friendly service, a clean, quiet room, with plenty of hot water.

It came with the free tasteless breakfast that all such lodgings offer, which is not so much a benefit to be complained about, but a feature to be ignored.

For a visitor to the Lincoln Museum who values good value in hotel stays, this place is the obvious choice. After a hearty breakfast, the short walk to the museum is good for digestion. Forget your car parked beside the hotel until you need it to drive someplace in Springfield for dinner or go up New Salem for its Lincoln sites.

I stayed here last September and wasn’t much bothered by not having daily room cleaning. Covid was a valid excuse then, but no daily room service now is inexcusable. I make my bed every day at home, but when I’m traveling and paying for accommodation I expect service.

Location was great. 2-3 blocks from museum. We walked to see everything. Not at all hard to find. Breakfast was great. Sat. We had biscuits and gravy, Sunday we had eggs and sausage. They have waffles too.

After the 1st night, they cleaned room but didn't leave us anymore decaf coffee. Or 1 clean towel. But not a huge deal. Motel has 24 hour coffee in the lounge. On demand coffee so it's not cold or burnt. Always fresh. And we just asked for another towel.

Carpenter Street hotel is located a short walk from the Amtrak Station and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, on the near north side of Springfield. We chose this hotel because we had stayed here previously and found the accommodations economical and pleasant. This is not a hotel in which you expect to receive spa services or lounge around in the room. There isn't a pool, nor is there a restaurant or cafe, though there is a small fitness center with treadmill, step machine, stationary bike, and free weights. The staff is friendly, helpful, and attentive. Our room was clean, though the finishing was a bit dated. The location is far enough away from the railroads that guests do not hear the train horn at night. The room was large enough to accommodate our three adult-sized bikes and a roll-away bed in addition to the two double-beds. The room also had a mini-fridge, which we found useful to store water, drinks, and other food. A full-service grocery store is appoximately 1/4 mile to the west of the hotel. The room charge included a basic American breakfast, with sausage, scrambled eggs, waffles, bagels, cold cereals, coffee, juice, etc. The manager stored our luggage free of charge after we checked out so that we could spend the rest of the day touring the city and environs.

The drain in our tub was running a bit slow, as was the water from the spout in the sink; neither of these prevented us from successfully completing daily hygiene. I informed the manager of these issues on our departure, who apologized and said it would be attended to. Also, the mattress on the roll-away bed was a bit soft. Otherwise, everything was fine. The hotel in general is well-maintained.

The hotel was surprisingly nice for the price. The staff we dealt with were all very friendly and professional. The room was better than expected for an $86 room.

There were a few areas of chipped paint on the wall, by the headboard and chair. The water pressure was ridiculously low. The sink was bad, the shower was horrible. I know most hotels don’t have great water pressure, but this was beyond poor pressure. If I were staying a second night I would have spoken with the front desk to see what could be done.

The hotel is only a few blocks away from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and museum, union station, old capital building, and several other sights connected to old Springfield. Our stay was wonderful, I only wish we had stayed more than a couple of nights. The only issue we had at the hotel was somebody blocking the entrance drive while they brought their stuff in. They left their car there for about 30 minutes. Nobody could get through. But, that wasn't the hotels fault. That was just somebody being rude and inconsiderate. I would recommend this hotel to anybody who has some sightseeing they'd like to do, or if you have somebody in the hospital at St. John's hospital. It's right next to the hospital there. I'd also recommend this hotel to anybody staying in Springfield. It really is a very charming hotel.

It was comfortable for the most part. I liked the proximity to the Lincoln sites. The front desk staff was friendly, and the price was pretty reasonable.

The neighborhood isn’t the greatest, and there is no restaurant at the hotel. There is a continental breakfast which was adequate, but if you don’t have transportation, you will have to pick up something to go for supper since a lot of the downtown restaurants close at 3 or 4 in the afternoon.

Fairly low price and large and clean room. I was at the end of the corridor, so quite peaceful. Professional and friendly reception. Value for money.

The location is not smack center of town, but even walking, the city center is close by. I'm sorry, but I need to say this, a breakfast that generates more plastic waste than relevant calories is not sustainable. Please fix this plastic waste problem!

The hotel was right by the Lincoln Museum and within walking distance of Abraham Lincoln's Springfield home. The rooms were quiet and comfortable. The receptionist was very helpful. The breakfast choices were great. I had scrambled eggs, sausage, a muffin, and yogurt.

Other than the presence of smokers (the smell especially) Carpenter Street Hotel accomplished all I expected to find, a quiet place with pleasant, knowledgeable staff in a location well suited for my destination in Springfield. I had planned to stay there again on my way back to Chicago but had to cancel my plans. But I will definitely put this hotel at the top of my list whenever I am in Springfield again!

There are a fair number of smokers at the hotel. Their smell seeps in.
