The location is marvelous, offering an amazing view of the city both day and night. The hostel was clean, and the room was great, with a view of the city and the castle.
To reach the hostel, you'll need to walk up a hill, either by climbing approximately 300 steps (a shortcut) or taking a longer route without stairs. I've heard there is a paid lift available, but I haven't used it myself. Be prepared for a lot of walking, and take care if you have heavy luggage. Alternatively, you can book a taxi to get there, as there is a small road leading up the hill, but no public transport is available. There were only two toilets for six rooms—one for men and one for women. However, there were also two shower rooms. There is also no kitchen as they have their own restaurant but it’s not open throughout the day and they close the restaurant at 8 PM. So you cant cook your own food.

I was so ecstatic with the location of this stay. Though it was a long hike uphill to get there, the views and serenity was worth it.
The main thing was the other guests unfortunately being extremely anti-social and rude by coming in late at night and slamming doors, screaming down the halls and banging.

Stadtalm is in an incredible position, high above the city of Salzburg, with 180 degree views over the old city and in to the mountains beyond. It is a popular place for people to come for a drink or coffee and serves good food, in an outdoor seating area. The rooms seem to have been recently refurbished and were very clean. Of course, there are no en suites, so expect to walk a few yards to the shared showers/toilets. The internet worked well. There are no TV's, but you get a 5* view, better than the top hotel in Salzburg instead! There are a lot of steps (320 I think) to get to the Stadtalm, but you can also use the lift to the modern art gallery (charge) and then there is a 300 metre quite easy walk with no steps.
You don't book Stadtalm if you want a luxury en-suite room with lots of facilities. You go there for superb views and staying in the battlements of an old castle! The restaurant stops serving food at 6.00 p.m. and drinks at 7.00 p.m. in the summer, so plan ahead, as it is a long, steep walk to Spar for a snack, or to go to a city restaurant!

Great views and surrounding area on the hill to explore. Can get down to the old town quickly by walking down the stairs/pathway.
The only things we wished were improved were the showers (have to keep pressing the button rather than getting continuous water flow), and some sound proofing so that noise from the restaurant doesn’t travel so easily. Our first night was a Saturday, and so the restaurant was quite noisy from our room on the first floor. The second night was a Sunday so the restaurant was quiet as was shut.

View outstanding, but of course a hike to earn it! Once you get used to those stairs it goes more quickly but the first hike up with bags was grueling. Clean clean clean, very safe feeling place, youth hostel vibe (but super clean!)
The system of finding your key with the code is lamentable - sign said to use 4-digit code, but code from booking.com was not correct. Finally realized there was a note with our name with another code, which is silly and not secure and also difficult to read. Just email us a code, secure, direct! It felt exactly like an escape room, but trying to figure out how to get IN instead of out. I can't even remember what finally worked... Same thing happened to next guest after us, whom we were able to help at midnight... It worked out, but seemed unnecessarily complicated.

We loved our stay here. We had read all the reviews so knew to get the lift up with our bags. It was worth the bit of a walk at the top as the views were spectacular. Was worth every penny/euro spent! We had also realised they did food and drink so we stayed up on the hill the first night and relaxed watching the sun dip down. Was magical. The food was great too and the staff were really friendly. I’ve included a photo of where the lift is as took us a little while to find it-was worth the €5 up and down as we had heavy bags!
Don’t bother with the breakfast as was €8.50 each and was basic-one small drink, slice of cheese, ham and some bread. Lots of lovely cafes at the bottom of the hill!

The view, vicinity and ambience were incredible. Luckily knew about the 320 steps up to get there (from other reviews) though it took awhile to find them and 1/2 of our party was too weary from earlier walking to be much impressed. Did not see any staff (it was nearly nighttime when we arrived) but friendly email made key code easy. Never did find where the alleged lift was, but stairs were easier on way down; then got lost in maze of buildings at the bottom… Unique and memorable place to stay. Probably the oldest building though with facilities basic but comfortable, all joy and no sacrifice.
Wifi password worked but gave no internet. Would have liked a sitting room/ breakfast area but did not find if there was one. Could have better directions to get there. Could only stay one night.

The location is absolutely stunning, at the top of a hill which overlooks the city. There is a lovely outdoor area for meals or just sitting and enjoying the view, and the food and drink is excellent. Don't be surprised when Google Maps takes you up a steep hill and through a wood - you are going in the right direction! Please just be aware that the lovely staff leave at around 6.00 - 6.30p.m. (they have been there all day, so they have every right to go home) so if you are going to arrive after that time, don't get there hungry and thirsty as the kitchen will be closed. You will also need to bring your own towels, as these are not provided (however, a hairdryer is, which was a pleasant surprise).
I really enjoyed my stay here and I wish I could have had longer as it was so lovely. I only have one very small suggestion, but this is absolutely not a complaint; just something to be aware of if it affects you. I had the breakfast, but because I wasn't sure how it worked, I didn't think to ask for a vegetarian breakfast before a rather meaty one turned up, but I am sure that if you don't want cold meat, you would be able to ask for a vegetarian alternative - the staff are very helpful, and all speak English, so you don't need to struggle to explain it in German.

I loved the location and hated the location. I loved the view once we got there. We usually like to stay within walking distance of the train station. With a lot of luggage that did not work so we had to pay a taxi coming and going. While there we walked up 338 steps to get there.
The restaurant closes too early. The first night there the taxi got us there at 6:00 and we were told the restaurant closes at 6:00, so we went to bed hungry. The second night there we got there right at 5:00 ready to order a meal and were told the restaurant closes at 5:00. We were a little upset, so regretfully they did serve us some soup that was already made. Still, once you get the hang of the place, if you don't need comfort, it is an ok place to stay.

Charming old house built on the edge of a cliff and adjacent to the medieval city fortifications. You have an amazing view both from the room and from the restaurant. The surroundings are green, calm, and filled with fortifications and other historical buildings, perfect for walks both leasurely and sporty. The room was warm and the beds comfortable. Common toilets were clean.
Getting to Stadtalm, even though it looks very central, is a bit of a hike. Even though it looks very central on the map, because it's so hight, you need to walk around until you find stairs or ramps to descend into the Altstadt. On your way back, you will need to be able to climb quite a bit. This ended up being charming for us. But if you have mobility problems or if you are travelling with more luggage, be warned. There were no towels provided.
