Location prime and beautiful. Breakfast buffet fabulous. The main level bar/sitting area really well laid out, decorated and inviting. Love all the books and odds and ends in bookshelves, on the wall, etc. Love that this was a cookie factory. Suggest perhaps having cookies as an afternoon/teatime treat available in bar/food area. Pizza and other menu items wonderful; just wish they were available a little later into the evening. Cocktails fun.
Noise level. The ground floor has a large party room and there is another party room on the main level. Gatherings can go past midnight, including thumping music and raucous partygoers. Showers could be very slippery! Water sits on floor with soap scum making it a tad treacherous at times. You might want to consider creating a bit more “curb appeal” for the front of the building. Right now it looks like an abandoned warehouse (with what seems an abandoned building next door). It takes a moment and second look at the address to confirm that one is at the correct address!

the bar was amazing and very easy to get to know people, which as a solo traveller was very important to me. The showers were very clean, as were the toilets. Overall the bed was relatively comfy and i didnt have a problem sleeping.
The pillows weren't vert good at all, they were so soft it actually felt like there was no pillow there. It didnt bother me so much, but it's very much quite a party hostel, meaning that sometimes you'd get guests come into the room at 2am making alot of noise.

My friend and I spent our first night here & it was overall a lovely stay. We arrived at 7am since we got to Iceland early in the AM. we were not able to check in until 2pm and it was stormy out. so we took our shoes off and cuddled up on a couch together where we slept until we could check in. The vibe of the hostel was super cool and us napping on the couch was totally acceptable, many other were also napping. Super safe feeling and everyone was super cool. We booked a private room with a shared bathroom & it exceeded expectations. Everything was very clean and comfortable with key access to each floor and rooms. The food was also very good!
We were woken up at midnight to what sounded like a rave happening below us. Upon further exploration there was a bar with music on the first floor. we were on the 3rd floor and it was very loud. Just a bunch of young people having a good time, but if you are sensitive to noise this might be something to consider.

It was a nice experience. Such wonderful and helpful staff. Neat and clean property from inside. Lovely music played on weekend during my stay and all were merrily enjoying .😀
Just a suggestion- if the shower curtains can be put to divide the shower areas will be much good as currently it’s a common shower room with 4-5 showers ( pic attached ) . Rest all was amazing.

nice pub/restaurant/chilling area downstairs, warm rooms (winter), comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen, free food left by previous guests, friendly staff (pub)
rude staff (reception), lack of conveniently placed charging points in the room, lack of curtains around the beds, filthy and cold bathrooms, noisy doors to the bedroom

I love staying at Kex. Every time I come to Iceland, if I want to be in the center of the city, this hostel has the best location. I am actually a huge fan of their vegan pizza, as well, and would happily argue that it's the best in town! There's a kitchen, as well as cafe/bar in the hostel. It's also conveniently located around the corner of a few markets, other restaurants, and one of the main shopping streets. I also used the laundry services on my last visit. It cost me about $14/Euro, but at least the machines were user friendly and didn't shrink my clothes and actually dried them (and I generally run mine on a lower setting). I also love the staff for being super friendly and accommodating and coming from all over the world. I think I will always stay at Kex when I'm traveling by myself.
Don't get me wrong, I can tell the staff works unbelievably hard. They will clean your room every day in a hostel dorm, as someone is usually checking out. I see them always cleaning the floors. For whatever reason, and maybe the facilities are slightly old, I find the bathrooms are not the cleanest hostel bathrooms I've been in. However, this could be due to the amount of people that use them, or the color of the floor. Everything else is fine about them. Maybe I'm just psyching myself out, as I dislike having to wear any shower shoes... But this is my ONLY negative thing I would say about Kex. Otherwise, I love KEX!

didn't enjoy the atmosphere very much, but it's definitely prominent: there's life happening, people talking and stuff - just not for me. great style and also free earplugs. clean beds and cozy rooms. there's also food free to use for anyone (stuff like pasta, cans, etc. that were left by other travelers), which is a clever idea and improves sustainability.
toilets aren't very clean, strange placement of beds, you kind of have to stare at another person when lying on the bed. beware if you have a heavy suitcase as you'll have to drag it onto the 3rd floor and that's quite hard. amenities in the kitchen are very limited

I stayed in a 6 bed mixed dorm room which was on the 4th floor (no elevator - but the staff helped carry the luggage). The bed was comfortable and the kitchen was fully equipped with a microwave, dishwasher, utensils etc. The heating in the room worked well. They cleaned the floors, bathrooms and toilets everyday. The breakfast was worth the price of 13 euros - good spread of options. They also had live events and activities almost everyday at the hostel lobby. The view from the hostel was amazing as it faces the mountains! The staff was nice and friendly as well.
I've stayed at hostels before and usually they provide some basic things like coffee, tea bags and milk for everyone to consume any time of the day. This place didn't have it and it was a bit annoying to have to pay 500 ISK for basic americano every morning. The grocery store called Bonus only had big bottles of coffee which was too much. My room had a weird stench, sort of smelled like jackfruit which wouldn't go away even after keeping the windows open.

To start, this place very much gives me hipster vibes from London Highbury and Islington or Berlin's Friedrichshain neighbourhoods. Check-in went smoothly and staff were friendly and courteous. The atmosphere was vibrant and social, operating very much like a pub and coworking space. Despite sleeping 42 to a room, I had a great experience at the hostel as it wasn't too noisy and the beds were well-organised with clean linens, storage pockets, shelves, and reading lights. The hostel also brews its own beer and was a great addition to the experience. There was also plenty of seating, excellent decorations, and a great proximity to the city centre of Reykjavik. Lovely place to stay!
Due to the high traffic in the bathroom and shower areas, there were quite a few paper towels strewn about. I suppose I could just recommend a few clean sweeps of the bathrooms and showering facilities to sort that out. Other than that, no complaints!

Bed was comfortable, shower was clean, people really kind. Reykjavik is not far from the Golden Circle, which I fully recommend to visit ! There is the Sky Lagoon 15 minutes away, I recommend it too !
I was in a 42 beds dormitory. The people are often of passage in this hostel, for only one night, they arrive often towards midnight since the airport of Rekjavik, and get up early to leave to walk, what makes that the peace is not always present, it is better to envisage something to plug the ears! One of the night I've spent there, a party was organised upstairs, it was very loud and it was impossible to sleep... Last thing which is not cool : there aren't curtains around the bed, which is not really convenient for privacy and shy people.
