This was easy by far one of the best experiences I’ve ever had with my family traveling. Upfront it is a beautiful location very conveniently located to visiting five of the seven “Hells”. The grounds provide a calm and relaxing environment with mountain views. The staff was exceptional and patient helping us truly enjoy this place with our young children. Our room included and in room traditional Japanese bath. We were able to launch by car to visit Kifune castle and Takasakiyama. Despite initially being told reservations would not be available for Teppanyaki the staff went above and beyond to try to find an opening and ultimately accommodated us. The food was excellent. The location is also convenient to a nearby 7-Eleven for snacks and re-supply for day outings. The check-in and checkout process works very well.

From the time we arrived we were welcomed greatly and was greeted by staff in our native language which took us by surprise. Apparently there are many staff versed in different languages to assist guests from around the world. I was impressed. The room was huge and the amenities were all there, it did not lack anything. I loved that they provided a rubber duck for the kids to play with in the private bath area. The view from our room was great - overlooking the steamy scenery of Beppu. I loved the private bath, we got an indoor and outdoor one, though the outdoor one is very dark at night since there were no lighting probably around the bath probably to protect privacy. The food served for breakfast and dinner were decent. We liked the teppanyaki dinner and the kids meals were delicious.
The corridors towards our room were a bit dark and the hotel has complex layout, so its quite confusing to get around, I had to check the hotel directory a couple of times on our first day. There were some areas that were closed too when we visited like the mud bath and the karaoke areas. The interior of the room looks a bit old and feels a bit dark, but regardless it was still comfortable to stay in

Beautiful property sprawling up a hill- it even has its own Noh stage. Room was large and spotless with indoor and outdoor onsen tubs, and a separate tatami room and western style bedroom. Beds were very comfortable. The common onsen was spacious with several areas, including a large outdoor onsen. There are several excellent restaurant options including kaiseki and teppanyaki. The location is next to five of the “hells” areas and there is a free shuttle service to the train station. Staff were kind and very helpful.
Very little to dislike - maybe weak water pressure in the shower during busy times?

Absolutely stunning hotel and room. I’ve never felt as relaxed as I have staying at a hotel before, the room with the private onsen is 100% worth it. We tried both the breakfast and the dinner (not the tenpanyaki option), and the food was delightful albeit pricey. Location wise the hotel is perfect if you want to see the hot springs, being practically in between 2 of the 7 hells. Would definitely come again if I’m ever stressed.

Stayed in room with private indoor and outdoor bath and enjoyed it very much. There is a public mud bath for ladies which was nice too. We ordered teppanyaki beef and lobster for dinner and it was exquisite. Breakfast set was also luxurious. The staff were extremely friendly and polite.
Hotel is quite big and it is quite a walk through two different elevators and dimly lit corridors to get to the room. But the private room and bath experience with a high view overlooking the city more than made up for it!

The location is excellent if you plan to visit all the Hells of Beppu, everything is very close to the Ryokan. The place itself is pretty good and the Onsen has an amazing view of Beppu, you have to go during the night. I stayed in one of the more expensive rooms, so it is a given that the room was amazing, having a private onsen, both inside and outside, was amazing. The dinner course was wonderful, best sake I had during my trip.
There was an issue where they thought I was a woman before arriving, so clothes and other amenities were not correct. They quickly fix it, but it made the check-in a little more hectic than necessary. This was the only place where this happen, so not sure if they did a mistake or booking did it, but it happened.

The room was big and there is a hot spring bath in the room that you can use at any time. I liked having it for the privacy. The view was also great as we were in the new Sora building. The food provided was a lot and tasted great as well. The fish and sashimi were very fresh, not fishy at all. Location to go around the 7 hells hotsprings was excellent. Around 1-2hours to go around all 7 (including a bus ride).
The whole experience was a bit pricey. It didn't feel so cost-effective despite all the things I liked.

Everything! We had such an amazing stay our room/house was by the pond. The children could feed the koi from our private balcony. The outdoor private onsen was lush. The indoor one was also great as we could adjust the temperature to suite smaller children. The room was extremely spacious. The staff were very friendly especially to our children. The teppanyaki dinner was good. We use their free shuttle service back and forth from the station.

This was a dream treat! Everything exceeded our expectations. To start with, we arrived by taxi and upon arriving we were invited inside the reception area where we sat on some comfortable leather couches sipping tea. This was the check-in process as well as setting our dining plans. Our luggage waited for us in the room, a room with ALL the amenities needed! The large room complemented the inside/outside onsen. We did not get to see the other facilities on the property however, we will be on our future trip!
The location is somewhat far from the main Japan cities....

Beautiful wood architecture with lovely landscaping. The tatami Matt room was so relaxing. The outside tub was magical. Local sake was tasty and Food was fresh and local. The staff were extremely accommodating and professional. Each special request was met with respect. The bus stop was right across the street and a few of the “hells” were adjacent to the beautiful property. Most highly recommended! Excited to return to kannawaen!
Watch your step in the beautiful onsen.
