The ryokan is little old, but it maintained well. Every clerk were nice. Dinner were disappointed, but breakfast was very nice. They also have a public bath on the basement but someone who have some tattoos, cannot use it. The bathroom was old too. But it was clean. if you were going to staying here, you can enjoy the night view of arashiyama and Katsura river.

Great location at Arashiyama. The room is spacey enough, a bit dated of course but well-maintained and managed. The public bath is clean and spacious, which is a plus for me. Meals were delicious, refreshing, and traditionally Japanese. Staffs were friendly, courteous and helpful, provided great services. I am unable to eat any raw fish/seafood (i.e. sashimi) due to my health condition, the hotel staffs and the chef had arranged meals for me accordingly, I was really thankful.

The room was a bit hot. I turned the air ventilation to "high" but still I woke up at midnight due to poor ventilation of the room. It would be great if they could improve the air ventilation. It would also be better if the room could have a humidifier. A bit too dry at night. It has public bath only instead of an onsen, I guess some people may have concern but I won't complaint given the price it charges.

Location in arashiyama is great. Right along the river and very close to major places to visit in arashiyama. Very calm and peaceful place. Unlike others I found the staff to be friendly and welcoming to us as foreigners. Lots of streetfood and cool shops along the strip 5 mins away

It is a 45 min commute via public transportation to visit other places in the city like gion. If you want to have a drink in the evening or dinner other than the traditional dinner served at Ranzan you will have to travel. Everything in arashiyama closes very early.

My family of four (two adults, two teens) booked Ranzan because we wanted to stay in a ryokan. Ranzan fit our budget and had good reviews. We booked the traditional Japanese room that fits four. The view of the garden was beautiful. The staff was gracious. Our beds were made for us when we returned from touring every evening. We did not get meals because we have a vegetarian in the family and were often gone at mealtime. This hotel is located in Arashiyama, which is not centrally located in Kyoto, but it is the most scenic part of Kyoto that we visited. Ranzan is a short walk from the Monkey Park, Tenriu-ji Temple, and the Bamboo Forest. It is 30-60 minutes by public transit from most other Kyoto attractions.

The hotel is somewhat dated and is not centrally located in Kyoto. It is about 15 minutes walk from the Saga-Arishiyama station. Lawson's and FamilyMart are located next to the station. It is near many restaurants, but not many of them are open for dinner and even fewer serve vegetarian fare. Mid-day is peak time in this neighborhood because most visitors just come for a few hours. We wanted the traditional Japanese room with futons on the floor, but though the futons are soft, it still feels like you are sleeping on the floor. Overall, our stay was good and I'm glad we tried the traditional Japanese room. But I might stick with Western-style beds if we return.

Excellent location, right by the river. Staff helped with local transport timetables and carried luggage to the rooms. Nice hot spring too. Fantastic food at dinner and breakfast. Karaoke rooms were available, although booked.

The room felt a little small and cramped for the price we paid. The beds seemed a bit old too. It was a bit of a walk from the main train stations. Everything else was expected, so very little negative things to say.

Convenient to shopping, bridge, bamboo forest rickshaw. Beautiful grounds, and view of river from restaurant, comfortable lobby to meet up or relax. Liked the shampoo, conditioner, body soap, and air/ clothes freshner. Appreciated the many outlets on desk and bed. Staff were all very pleasant, polite, and helpful. We got a great tip to go to Sushi Iso, she made the reservation, and gave great directions. Check-in and check-out were very easy.

Our bathroom smelled SLIGHTLY of sewage.

The location was excellent right by the river and just few blocks from all major attractions such as the bamboo forests, temple, and the main street. The property while old was well maintained especially the garden and tatami rooms.

The food was just not that good despite having all its formality of onsen meal so if having the best onsen meal is the goal, this isn't it. We had the traditional tatami room which was lovely looking into the garden but I don't recommend any western rooms as they looked so dated and hardly an experience, especially for Arashiyama.

Location is great to walk to Tenryuji temple & Bamboo forest, you're pretty much close to everything - very nice walk around the area for either sightseeing or food. Clean room and well equipped public bathroom. The staffs are friendly and helpful, they keep up to date with JR status and advise us when we try to go to Kinosaki in the snowstorm day.

Keiseki dinner is so so, great service though. Better get the room with breakfast - they serve traditional meal with steamed tofu and onsen egg is the best!

The property is very close to the Bamboo Forest and is very quiet regardless of its central placement. Our room had a really nice view, it was spacious and comfortable. The hotel has a little bit of an “upper class” vibe (in a good way). We booked with breakfast and dinner and they were really worth the money! The dinner is a Kaiseki meal, presented like a little work of art. We didn’t really know how to eat it but the staff was so friendly and guided us. Overally staying at this hotel was a wonderful experience and we wish we could have stayed more here.
