Staying at Ryokan Kohro in Kyoto was a delightful experience for my family of 3 kids and 2 adults. Located in the heart of Kyoto it is just a short walk from the bustling Nishiki Market and the historic Gion district. The location of the ryokan is fantastic. Walking distance to the city and hustle and bustle but located in a quiet traditional part of town. The moment we stepped into Ryokan Kohro, we were greeted with warm, friendly smiles. The traditional Japanese decor, with its tatami mats, wooden accents, and minimalist design was spectacular. We were taken to our room which was a traditional Japanese-style room, complete with tatami flooring, sliding shoji doors, and a low wooden table with floor cushions. The futon beds were laid out in the evening by the staff, and we found them to be incredibly comfortable. The room was spacious, impeccably clean, and had all the necessary amenities. One of the highlights of my stay was the public bath, or "onsen," at Ryokan Kohro. The bath area was beautifully designed with natural stone and wood, creating a tranquil environment perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring Kyoto. It was spotlessly clean at all times and it is clear the staff take great pride in it. The staff at Ryokan Kohro were incredibly hospitable and went above and beyond to ensure our stay was comfortable. They provided helpful recommendations for nearby attractions and were always available to assist with any requests. We didnt have a chance to experience the traditional Japanese breakfast or dinner Ryokan Kohro provides but the reviews and pictures look spectacular and we definitely will next time we are in Kyoto.

OH my god!! We loved the experience! A bit expensive but definitely worth it and we'd definitely go back! We booked a japanese style room with tatami floor and futons and also dinner and breakfast included. They explained us everything about the room. The woman that brought the dinner to our room was so nice. She made a huge effort to explain how to eat the meal because she didn't speak english. The dinner amazing, also the breakfast. You need to like japanese food, otherwise you should eat outside. The room was big, the onsen was also very comfortable

We had to translate almost everything with google translator because many things were only written in japanese. Only the staff from the front desk spoke english. We also recommend the hotel to put an english translation for the basic things like, the rules of the onsen and the dinner and breakfast menu. I know it's part of the experience but we would've appreciated even more

These people were very friendly. It was fun to try something different so you get a glimpse of the old way. They have an Onsen! 😁 There isn't a bed in the room but all you have to do is tell the staff when they can come make a bed for you. I didn't try the dinner but the breakfast is good and fun to try. Toilet was heating up the seat as you are sitting on it. It also flushes a few seconds after you stand up.

The Bed felt hard for me but maybe I should just have asked for an extra layer. I dont recall there was any instruction for how to behave or use the Onsen. As a foreigner that could have been helpful but I just used YouTube to get an idea of what to do/expect. I couldn't open the window so I didn't get any fresh air in the room

The rooms are clean and made in the traditional way. We had so much fun! The public baths are nice and sleeping on tatami floors was an experience we were so happy we got to have! It’s a great place to stay! The staff were so nice and helpful and the dinner experience was so worth the money! We couldn’t believe the quality and variety of food and the experience is one we will never forget!

It’s a little walk to the station but that’s kind of nice because it means it’s in a somewhat quieter area.

Very friendly staff who did their best to make us feel welcome! Unfortunately, they don't speak English but they really try to get their message across. Also, we were very impressed with the good breakfast - something you need to try out :)

Public onsen and the fact that it you weren't allowed to make your own bed (you have to ask for the bed to be made). The breakfast was a big surprise for the first morning, every second one was very similar - making it a bit boring. It would be good to have clearer instructions on what you as a guest are allowed or not. Also, we had issues controlling the temp in the room, as the windows don't have proper isolation.

The breakfast kaiseki was one of the highlights of the trip. Others include the available public bathhouse, complimentary yukata where females can select the design, as well as ability to leave the luggage pre-check in and post-check out so that we could explore more of the city without having to carry around our baggage. The ryokan was extremely clean and had toiletries, dessert, and bottled water available in the room.

The location was a bit far from the nearest metro/bus and the city (~10 min walk).

Staff are very friendly and helpful. The ryokan room itself is very large and spacious. It really made me feel like I'm on holiday. I also loved that it had a very distinct Japanese character. It's truly an authentic experience, and I'll likely come back if given the chance to visit Kyoto again.

The pillows were kind of small and tough but overall still a very good stay.

Amazing location with the most attentive, helpful and kind staff! Clean big rooms and a great public bath, extra blankets and pillows etc if needed, great coffee machine, lovely attention to detail. Right by one of the main subway lines for main Kyoto station and other attractions, and walking distance from Gion and Nishiki market. amazing place!

it wasn’t very soundproof at the window but luckily the street was a quiet one

Hotel was very clean. Staff was exceptionally friendly especially the lady at the front desk who spoke perfect English. There was another lady who didn't speak English but anticipated our every need. Well worth the money. Location was also excellent for us. Quiet yet close to the Nishiki market

Stay was too short. Rules for the onsen should be posted in English
