Beautiful Ryokan in the middle of Kyoto, walking distance to popular districts while having a relaxing location. The staff were beyond welcoming and made us feel at home. They provided traditional Japanese breakfast and dinner which was delicious. Sleeping in the traditional Japanese tatami beds was one of the best sleeps I've had, they provided pyjamas and yakata/robes to wear around the hotel. It was like a well serviced and welcoming BnB. I definitely would stay here again and wish I had stayed longer than 2 days.

If you are a larger foreigner, this place may not be for you as it's traditional and low set furniture and smaller doors. I can not fault a single thing about this Ryokan at all.

Centrally located, this ryokan was great for a traditional Japanese experience. The staff/owners were so friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was interesting as well as the shared bathroom, but it does include an onsen bath which is nice to use at end of day. Only a short walk to the Nishki markets as well as shops and plenty of food options to eat out

As it is an old building the musty smell of the rooms was a bit over bearing but the humidifier does help in the rooms. The shared bathrooms are also only open from 4pm-11pm which might be annoying if you wanted to have a shower in the morning but overall not too much of a bother.

A very cute traditional inn in Kyoto. It's 150 years old, so there are aspects of the ryokan that do reflect that. Our room was spacious, but the showers are in a separate area and are shared (separated by men/women, but no private shower partitions), so something to keep in mind. The hot tub in the shower area was really nice. Great for soaking after a long day of sightseeing. The staff was super friendly and hospitable and the breakfast was delicious and totally worth it in my opinion. There's wifi in the room and air conditioning.

There were a few stains in the carpet here and there and a few areas that smelled a little musty (mainly the bathroom), but overall enjoyed our stay.

I was pleasantly surprised with the Ryokan Sanga since I had read some poor reviews since booking. The location is close to the local market but some distance from the nearest subway. We took taxi to and from the railway station because of luggage The Ryokan Sanga is styled as a traditional Japanese inn although this sieems to be within a more modern structure. We were made welcome by the owner on arrival. Our room was comfortable and warm with 2 Futons laid on the mat. There was en-suite toilet and wash basin. Shower and bath was at the traditional communal Japanese bath which is only available in the late afternoon and evening.. A good traditional Japanese breakfast was served which varied over the time we stayed.

Morning bath session would be nice.

My stay in Ryokan Sanga was really nice. The staff was really friendly and helpful. Booking, payment and any other communication went smoothly. You can also use a TaQbin from the accommodation to your next stay. It is a good area to stay at in kyoto, many things are in walking distance and you are close to any common bus line. The room itself was super pretty, and the futon comfortable. The onsen was really nice and you get a yukatta to use. The breakfast is extraordinary good if you like Japanese Breakfast, and I would recommend to book it. If you stay several days the breakfast will change slightly from day to day. I would definitely like to stay here again and would recommend the place to anyone that wants to stay in Kyoto!

You have to stay here to experience a full Ryokan experience! Make sure to do the breakfast! They offer an 8 or 8:30am meal. I didn’t expect it to be that fancy. I’m glad it got me to try new things that I wouldn’t have necessarily ordered at a restaurant because I would have been nervous. I also liked that it was a few blocks away from the shopping district, which was closed around 8:30-9pm so the area got quiet at night. It’s an amazing spot for tourists to stay. The owner was super sweet, tended to us at the door every time was came in and left for the day. The staff was all sweet and attentive, I wasn’t expecting such service.

Only thing is our bedroom had a smell when you walked in. It smelled musty or like a hamster cage. But we just opened the windows to air it out and then it was fine. I would stay again though, it wasn’t a big deal compared to everything else that was great.

The place was amazing, it was our first time staying in a traditional Japanese Ryokan. The tatami mats, public baths, futons, and all the traditional decor was very beautiful. Staff were very accommodating. The two men running the place tried their hardest to communicate with us in English (they're learning! Very cute). Breakfast was so beautiful, was an amazing start to the day. The baths were INCREDIBLE. The best bath I've ever had. Perfect temperature, so clean, the tub was massive. Toiletries and all the amenities were lovely, too.

The pillows they supplied with the futons were very flat. They need to supply XXL size slippers for non-Asian guests with larger feet (they have L slippers, but even those were small). It would also be helpful if they had a sign near the front of the entrance to indicate how to properly enter a Japanese ryokan (etiquette about taking shoes off, etc).

The breakfast provided was delicious, and you could tell there was a lot of effort and care put into its preparation. We appreciated the comfortable traditional clothing provided to us to wear while we were staying there. I highly suggest you wear the clothing. The entry to the ryokan was beautiful, and our room had a garden view. We enjoyed sitting in our small sitting room outside our sleeping room and admiring the garden while we ate some local strawberries. We could see someone picking up fallen leaves from the garden at one point, which was a testament to their attention to detail! The doors, walls and windows in our room all slid to open and added a sense of historical living. I loved being able to open them. All the employees were kind and really tended to our needs. The location was awesome, just a 5 minute walk to Nishiki Market.

I thought the room pieces could have been a little more coordinated, but other than that it was a great stay!

After a full day of walking around, it's really nice to look forward to bathing in the onsen on the first floor. Most of the time, my friend and I were in the quaint onsen by ourselves. The breakfast was one of the highlights, some very exciting and unfamiliar dishes, the portions were very generous, with a variety of proteins — I only wish my stomach was bigger! It's good if you have a large appetite in the morning! It is AMAZING to have a fresh pot of hot water in the room everyday — wow, such a small and game-changing detail if you are into having a cup of tea before bed. Sleeping on futons and tatami is one of the best things ever. The staff is attentive and friendly. It is possible to communicate everything you need to in English, but if you know some Japanese, I found that my beginner to intermediate Japanese came in quite handy as well. If you are thinking of staying in a ryokan, this one, or any ryokan, I strongly suggest watching a video or read an article about the protocols and rituals so you can have the utmost traditional experience. The atmosphere is quiet and upheld by respectful exchanges — with a little bit of a cultural context, it will help maintain the vibe and will enhance your stay.

It was a worthwhile cultural experience to stay in a traditional Japanese ryokan, enjoying the beautiful and filling breakfasts each morning and the onsen at night in the provided yukata. The location was about 5 minutes away from the bustling Nishiki Market on foot and just a little longer to other shopping places and bus stops. A 10 minute walk from the nearest station (Karasuma-oike). The service is exceptional - they helped us book a taxi smoothly and quickly when we were in a rush.

Slightly steep stairs to climb up to our room - it was okay for us but not recommended for people with weak knees.
