The Great Gatsby Hotel in Houghton is straight out of a dream. It's gorgeous and one of the prettiest I have stayed in. My room, the Library, was my dream room. Cosy and beautiful, I could have stayed there for days, devouring all the books. This hotel is beautiful and offers warm hospitality and attentive service. It's set in a lovely neighbourhood, although in Johannesburg, that means little as you cannot walk freely in the city. For a different and unique experience in Johannesburg, do not hesitate to book here.

Some small inconveniences I felt were - noise percolated easily into the room from outside. Also, the Internet was patchy.

Gina is an absolutely wonderful hostess and The Great Gatsby is a fantastic place to stay in Joberg. Gina greeted us at the property, showed us around, and was always on hand to offer any help we required. She was very hospitable and made us feel right at home. We stayed in the coach house, and Gina kindly managed to get the place to ourselves, which we really appreciated. The Gatsby buildings have so much character both inside and out, and it was an absolute pleasure to stay there. I hope we will return to Joberg in the future and we'll be sure to stay at The Great Gatsby again! Thanks Gina!!

Great location - closed to everything yet very peaceful -, impressive interiors and impeccable hospitality! You get to ask yourself if it is really worth it to leave the Gatsby and visit the city, because spending time enjoying the beautiful guesthouse´s spaces is in itself a great experience. Awesome breakfast as well, with the opportunity to meet other guests at a common table (as I did) or to enjoy it in a private space, according to your preferences. The icing on the cake was spending some time chatting with Gina, super friendly and helpful owner, and enjoying a love overload from the cutest little and well-behaved dog, Bella.

Anything I write will sound too good to be true. The pictures do not do it justice. It is an elegant villa, with an old world feel to it. When you enter, you'll feel right at home. Gina is an excellent hostess - down-to-earth, friendly and generous. The rooms are tastefully done, cosy and comfortable. We stayed in both the boudoir and the library - both rooms are fabulous. Breakfast was just right - delicious and varied each day. We loved being there, and the only sad thing is that we could not stay longer and that the Gatsby cannot be magically transported to every place we will visit in our lives from here on. We thank Gina and her staff for spoiling us and kiss Bella (the dog)!

There is absolutely nothing negative to say about it. We wished we could move in, it was that good. If you can, stay for a few days, not just for one night!

Everything. Location is great, right next to a beautiful viewpoint. We felt very safe too in the home and neighbourhood. Check in process was clear and great despite our flight delay, and Gina whatsapped us ahead of time to confirm our arrival time. The rooms themselves are beautifully appointed - very clean and with modern amenities, yet so homely and warm. The bathrooms, while not ensuite (Princess and Man Cave rooms), were just across the corridor. They are massive and each have a bathtub with bath salts as well as hot shower with strong pressure and good drainage. Breakfast was amazing. Having come from several hotel stays in Kenya and Rwanda, the muesli, yoghurt, fruits, scrambled eggs, bread, freshly squeezed juice and all were divine. The dining room is beautifully furnished and Gina herself is so hands on with the entire process. Note breakfast is R150pp, which we felt was very reasonable. We got to keep our luggage past check out time, which is always helpful, and Gina made sure to be present to see us off for our cab to the airport. All in all, we definitely got so much more than the price we paid for the stay. We received great hospitality from Gina and would strongly recommend the Great Gatsby Houghton to anyone of our friends coming to Joburg.

Nothing much really. We couldn't find a hair dryer in the room, but Gina promptly delivered it the next day and apologised about the oversight. Thank you very much!

The breakfast was indeed enjoyable, despite its higher cost. The owner's warm hospitality was a standout. The rooms are charmingly designed in old Victorian style with exclusive vintage decor. the provision of a kitchen with tea and milk options was excellent. I experienced a delayed flight, but the staff kindly waited for my late arrival.

The bathrooms had a slight musty odour, suggesting the need for improved ventilation. Additionally, I found it would be beneficial to provide guests with an ample supply of soap and drinking water upon their arrival.

Wow, this was a lovely estate. Beautiful old house and well kept grounds greeted us upon arrival. We stayed in a private unit separate from the main house that was high up on the hill and had a great view of Joberg and the hills in the distance. It was very peaceful and quiet during the day and the evenings. The host, Gina, was very kind too. It was our first time in Johannesburg, and she gave us a lot of recommendations for where to go eat and shop in the area. She and her staff also cooked a fantastic breakfast for us every morning. Her property felt very safe, and there was secure parking onsite for our rental car. If we ever come back to Joberg, we would gladly stay here again.

A small thing really; when it rained one day it tripped the power to the unit we were staying in, and despite flipping the switch on the db / electrical board back on, it kept shutting itself off after a few seconds, which meant no power to the entire unit. It happened in the evening one night though, so it wasn't a major inconvenience. When things had dried out the next morning, we had no problem getting the switch on the db board to stay on. We let the host know, and she did assure us that she was going to have someone come out to fix it.

I travel to South Africa two to three times a year, and have done so over the course of the past 20 years. I have stayed at the top and finest hotels in Johannesburg - the best of the best, and absolutely NONE can compare to 'The Great Gatsby' in terms of hospitality, comfort, ambience, decor, luxuriousness, and individual attention. The hotel is a gracious, completely restored mansion from the early 1920's. It has been beautifully and exquisitely restored to its original Grandeur. The mansion consists of 7 luxurious suites, each decorated in an individual tasteful manner, reflecting the aura of its original time. The rooms are not only STUNNING and SPOTLESS, but filled with exquisite antique furnishings from its individual era. The home itself is a work of art, akin to a museum. The history of the mansion is extensive, and one feels the wealth, graciousness, splendour, and finesse of those from the early 1920's who walked the passages of this home. The breakfasts were STUNNING and made to order. 5 course breakfasts. On fine china, cotton linen, and antique silverware, all on a grand stunning table which dates back to the 1800's as does all of the furniture really. Comparable to the BEST breakfasts in the world. Individual service that exceeded my experiences in all the 5 star hotels throughout the world that I have stayed in. The delicious dinners resembled nothing less than works of art. The host Gina - well there are no words to describe her. She could not do enough for me. She is the most refined, cultured, kindest, and SUPERB host. She served not only as a host, but as a concierge, recommending all that there is to see and do in the area. In terms of value, this is a joke. I cannot understand how such luxury can be presented at such a low cost, even given the great exchange rate with the American Dollar. Comparable establishments charge 10 times the price. Absolutely everything was spectacular, There was nothing that did not exceed my expectations.

Everything about The Great Gatsby is pure magic. I was lucky enough to receive not one, but two upgrades during my stay by the wonderful owner, Gina. Each of the three rooms I stayed were exquisitely decorated to match the buildings, and each had their own unique 'bonus' features. By far my favourite was the second bedroom (ie not the main bedroom) of the Coach House. It's nestled against the cold rocks of the hill, feels cosy- smells amazing!- and has a massive shower. You will sleep like a baby here, and if you're a dog person like me you'll absolutely fall in love with Gina's friendly, playful pooch! For those concerned about loadshedding, the property does have a generator, so you won't be left in the dark!
