It was my second time staying here. I visit the town because a friend lives there. Before my trip, I kept talking to him to plan ahead and find good places to go out to, like pubs. Since it's England, we thought we should find a place serving shepherd's pie. We both barely found a place in a nearby town, serving vegan shepherd's pie. We even asked them if they can make the original version, which contains mutton. They replied saying the menu will have changed by that time. I told this to the staff at The Rectory via direct messages, they confirmed that they haven't seen shepherd's pie around either, then the manager told me the chef will make the dish just for me and my friend! The same "hunt" happened regarding cottage pie (that one is made with beef) but the one pub we could find, serving vegan cottage pie in a nearby town, simply agreed to make us the non-vegan version. Back to The Rectory: Their chef made us portions that were about twice the size of the aforementioned cottage pie from the neighboring town. And it cost us much less than we expected, about half of what we thought we'd pay. We thought we could at least leave a tip for the favor, but no!

There's little to dislike at this place. Even the room cleaning lady would sneak in while I was having breakfast, to clean the room without me there. Her colleague from over the weekend didn't do that, however. What else should I dislike? That the toilet seat was made of wood, probably capable of holding people weighing 150kg/300lbs? That's a good thing. That they ask you nicely to leave your key when you go out, in case you come back late, so that they know who to expect to come? That's also a good thing.

The hotel was wonderful, it had a lovely feel to it, very welcoming. The staff were excellent, very helpful and accommodating, despite all my different requests! Excellent food. Breakfast was delicious, well cooked and there was plenty of it. We also had an assortment of 'snacks' for our evening meal, again, very fresh and tasty. The room was superb, spacious, light and airy, just the right temperature too. It was surprisingly cosy for its size. Very comfortable. The hotel was easy to find, had lovely grounds and lots of period features.

My only niggles were the wifi signal wasn't very good, and as I was working from our room this was a bit of an issue. In the end I just tethered my laptop to my phone as it was a much better connection! Also, and this is just being picky, now! Maybe a deeper mattress on the room 4 bed, as the wooden bed frame digs into your thighs when you sit on the edge!

Lovely spacious room, comfortable bed, hot shower and lovely breakfast. The information pack in the room was very in-depth with everything about the location history, facilities and local knowledge including Dr’s, Dentist, pharmacy amongst others. Local pubs down the road, train station a steady 15 minutes walk with train into Shrewsbury a mere 15 minutes. A big mention to the hotel staff who were absolutely brilliant, very friendly and nothing was too much trouble.

Everything was as we’d expect if not better, will definitely be returning during the warmer months.

Lovely old house and garden. Extremely helpful and friendly staff. Lovely breakfast and they dealt well with our various complicated dietary requests!! Happy to chat and share useful local knowledge. Good parking and garden, downstairs lounge and bar area were comfortably furnished and never busy during our stay. Bedrooms were comfortable. Convenient location for getting to Shrewsbury and nearby places, also Chester and the Welsh borders. Close to local shops and pubs in small town of Wem. Great bakery and delicatessen. Well stocked Co -op.

No lift or downstairs bedrooms but staff were happy to help with luggage. Some of the furniture in bedrooms a bit old eg creaky wardrobe door but all added to character! It's North Shropshire - access to the southern Shropshire hills area was not difficult but traffic on the Shrewsbury ring road could be busy.

The Old Rectory is a fine, as it says on the tin "Old" building, in large grounds. As they don't serve evening meals, and we didn't fancy walking around Wem in the rain to find an alternative, we opted for their small bar menu. We were not disappointed - the food was excellent, and that and the wine were both very reasonably priced. Breakfast was superb - good selection, and I have to say that my full English was one of the best I have had in a hotel in recent years.

Being a very old building, we didn't expect the bedrooms to be particularly modern, but the bathroom in particular could benefit from a bit of an upgrade.

After a long drive for work I was met by a very welcoming member of staff. Nothing was too much trouble for her, she showed me to my room and helped me arrange something to eat for dinner. As a female who often travels for work it was refreshing to have someone genuinely care that my stay in their hotel would be a wonderful experience. Breakfast was excellent, the staff were very friendly and I didn't wait long to be served breakfast. I would highly recommend this hotel.

I've never faced that level of care from staff before. The breakfast menu isn't big, but it doesn't need to be - I ate the same thing for days and I found it very good each time.

Only one minor annoyance happened and it was essentially my fault - cleaning staff knocks on your door each day to ask for permission to clean the room. I never needed or wanted cleaning the room, but I couldn't find one of those "do not disturb" signs to hang on the door. At the end I told this to the staff and they said I should have mentioned it, because they apparently do have those signs and they could have told cleaning staff to never knock on my door.

Lovely view from room over beautiful gardens. Good cooked breakfast that catered for gluten and lactose free needs. Friendly staff.

Room walls very thin, could hear conversation in next room. Was hot in room so I tried to open windows but had to prop them open with a tissue box as they just closed, ok in the end. Hotel has a bar but it took us guests a while to find a staff member to serve drinks, maybe short of staff. However the staff were very friendly when they did come. I would have liked an earlier breakfast, but in common with many places it was 8am, which is quite late if you have lots of plans for the day.

Beautiful old rectory, nice bar and dining area . Lovely garden. Lovely room . Bathroom well equipped toiletries . Good size car park

Our mattress wasn’t very comfortable and would recommend replacing . Our room detais stated mini bar but there wasn’t one . Staffing was an issue . Unfortinately the older woman who took our breakfast order forgot to bring it and by time we found some to ask what happened we had to go . No offer of refund for breakfast was made just apologies . I think orders should be taken using a piece of paper or ipad etc and not trying to remeber what the customer asked .

The most beautiful building with wonderful original features. An extremely clean and well maintained building. Kate welcomed us and throughout our stay couldn’t do enough to help us. She was wonderful. Just all the little touches - like fresh milk when we wanted it make all the difference. The breakfast was amazing and perfectly cooked as well. We would stay again in a heartbeat and would highly recommend. The value for money is amazing.

Nothing to fault.
