Excellent value for money! Wonderful location across the road from the bay. The room was clean and a good size with everything you need for a short stay. All of the staff were very welcoming and friendly. The breakfast was superb, especially the sausages which were very tasty. The single rooms were at the back of the property so the only view was the resident pigeons on the roof tops who give you an early morning chorus but living in the countryside, I am used to this. We were lucky to park outside the hotel 3 out of 4 days. Day 4, we were later returning after visiting the Beamish Museum (excellent!) and parked at the Beefeater which is free after 6pm until 10am. Lovely part of the country with a superb coastline with lots to see and do. Fish & Chips at the Fishermans bay which is in walking distance, was wonderful.

The mattress was very thin and you could feel the springs every time you moved. It really could do with changing although after the first night, I slept like a log after busy days and sea air. A soap dish in the shower would make life easier. Just little quirks although the positives more than outweighed these minor issues.

The breakfast was self service and available early which really suited me for going off for the day to explore the area. I booked a sea view suite which was incredibly spacious, and did have wonderful view which was only obscured at night by a street lamp but when I stay there again I will just ask for a different suite. The reason the street light was a problem for me was I wanted to do some stargazing. But that was purely just because I hadn't thought about such things. The staff were very friendly and really helpful with helping with cases up and down the stairs. The beaches are so clean and so close. Whitley Bay is also very accessible if you don't drive, as the train station is on the Newcastle Metro line around 5-8 minutes away depending on how quickly you walk, and from Newcastle you can get regular trains into Edinburgh, Durham and York for a day out. Buses are also very accessible and regular.

Lack of usb ports but I took my own adapter.

Some of the scores i gave this hotel were the top ones but still not high enough it was an amazing stay. It wasnt modern and contemporary but it was comfortable and clean. When I arrived and opened the door i was blown away by the view and the room smelled amazing and clean. The breakfast was varied well cooked and tasty. The staff were friendly and helpful really nice people who made my stay that little bit more special.

I only had one unimportant problem and it was the wardrobe was only half size with drawers at the bottom and i wear dresses long ones that couldnt hangso were creased but next time i will come with skirts and problem solved.

The hotel is opposite the beach, with limited free parking in front, if you are lucky enough to get a space. If not, you can park for free between 6pm and 10am in the car park next to The Beafeater, and it costs £3 for the entire day from 10am-6pm. Staff are always friendly and helpful. And the breakfast is superb. Rooms are always clean.

Unfortunately, the bed in this room was really uncomfortable. You could feel the springs in it and they dug into you when you were lying on it. I stay at this hotel regularly and have never had this issue before though. When I stay again in August, I will ask not to have this room for this reason

This was our second visit to the Royal. On this occasion the only room was at the back. Everything was fine and dandy apart from three things:- One the b..... pigeons awoke earlier than I wanted to. Two, the bedside light wasn't working and there was only the one by the bed. Three, the lever style plug inthe bathroom washbasin was broken, so we wasted a lot of water. I understand from themanagement that these things have been fixed. Shower was excellent. Breakfast was very good and plentiful.

As mentioned above. Parking is limited but the public car park is only a couple of minutes away, free from 6pm to 10 am.

It’s a quirky building which is always fun. The room we had was a sea view room and since the hotel fronts directly onto the sea front, the view was wonderful. The room was very spacious, with a settee and coffee table to relax at. The bed was king size and very comfortable me too. The bathroom was spacious as well and the shower itself gave a good experience although the cubicle was in need of a bit of an upgrade. The staff were helpful and friendly. The cooked breakfast was tasty and plentiful.

Nothing - it’s actually lovely.

Breakfast was excellent - staff very busy, but still very pleasant, and still as quick as could be expected. Good but basic choice of hot and cold items and I noticed someone asking for fried eggs instead of the scrambled provided, and these were quickly brought. 24 hour Reception gave a feeling of extra security.

Basic room though quite a good size. Not a good view over flat roof, but choosing the cheapest single option, I did not expect too much. All bedding & towels perfectly clean and acceptable, although skirtings, bathroom tiles, etc not too good.

Obviously someone has to have a back room but half a window in room 6 doesn't let in much natural light but can appreciate that refitting for ensuite took that away. Didn't notice a communal lounge for visitors - was there one? Chair in room not that comfortable for lengthy sitting so public lounge would have been good to take advantage of for evening period.

Found impossible to lock bedrrom door so left it unlocked when out. Not so good. On arrival, outside doesn't look very inviting as premises look sad and tired but if being refurbished in the near future which is what I was lead to believe then could be great. Will look next time i am visiting Whitley Bay.

Lovely friendly staff . absolutely great location , ''sea view'' fantastic. good size room decent ish bed thanks

sadly the room seriously needs an odd job ''person'' to keep a close eye on the ''little things'' but important things. bathroom has no seat no where to hang towels clothes etc sadly, the little towel rail thing is hanging off the wall , tiny things overall BUT as said its just the basics being looked after that make the visit a happier visit thats all .. just needs a bit of room maintenance to make it a ''Royal Hotel'' again!!!

The hotel is situated overlooking the promenade and the rooms at the front of the hotel enjoy views of the bay and St. Mary's lighthouse and the hotel is centrally located to the amenities of Whitley Bay. The staff are friendly and welcoming, during the stay there were additional requirements and it was no trouble at all to the staff. The hotel lobby, corridors and dining room are clean, the twin room was also clean and comfortable and well priced given the hotels location. In the room was a hardback book detailing places to visit which was useful and a folder containing information specific to the hotel along with tea and coffee making equipment and an ensuite. Within the hotel there is a dining room for guests to enjoy a breakfast in the morning if they wish. There is vehicle parking at the front of the hotel, alternatively there is a car park in close proximity to the hotel that is free after 6pm to 10am with a maximum charge of £3 per 24 hours.

There was nothing I did not like given the existing star rating of the hotel. As with all hotels, equipment, furnishings become tired and should be renewed or upgraded when possible.
